Why NYC’s Entertainment Commissioner Sees Reopening Music Venues as a Chance to Rethink a ‘Flawed’ System

“It strengthens the argument that we really need to support our local venues, and for us to represent their needs at the table,” says Anne del Castillo. This week, New York City enters phase three of reopening amid the coronavirus pandemic, meaning the return of hair and nail salons, basketball courts and more spaces in addition to outdoor dining. But for local music venues from (Le) Poisson Rouge to Brooklyn’s Elsewhere — many of which faced rising rents, gentrification and other challenges even before the pandemic began — the road to reopening remains ongoing and uncertain. Anne del Castillo knows this struggle well. The New York City native took over as commissioner of Mayor Bill de Blasio‘s Office of Media and Entertainment (MOME) in April 2019, with a foc...

Halsey Shows Off New Hand Tattoo Honoring Juice WRLD: See the Pic

Looks like Halsey‘s got some new ink. On Tuesday (July 8), the pop star debuted a new tattoo on social media in tribute to her late pal Juice WRLD. Written in cursive across the back side of her hand, Halsey’s latest tattoo reads “Life’s a mess 999,” referencing the title of her posthumous collaboration with the rapper and his favorite number. (Juice also had his own “999” tattoo on his forearm, which he claimed represented making good out of bad, and also named his official merch collection using the number.) “Juice was one of the greatest people I have ever known, and one of the most brilliant artists we will ever live to witness. A true genius who had lyric and melody spilling out of him without any second thought or hesitation. And a beau...

Steve Von Till’s ‘Music Will Get Us Through’ Playlist

With everyone sequestered and self-quarantining due to the coronavirus, we’ve asked our favorite artists to come up with playlists that keep you entertained. Here is Neurosis guitarist Steve Von Till: Many of us let music into our lives in a way that can intentionally or unintentionally frame our experience. It can console, celebrate or validate that which has already happened, providing the soundtrack to our personal histories. Music can be the rhythm of the present moment altering the perception of our realities one way or another and inspiring action. Music can also guide our thoughts for the future, be they dystopian or full of hope. Music is power and the permission to feel all the feelings. Longing for Connectedness to All Things Luke Schneider – “Anteludium”From his brand new debut ...

DEF LEPPARD guitarist Phil Collen spoke to SiriusXM‘s “Trunk Nation With Eddie Trunk” about the postponement of the band’s “The Stadium Tour” with MÖTLEY CRÜE, POISON and JOAN JETT & THE BLACKHEARTS to the summer of 2021. “The Stadium Tour” was scheduled to kick off on June 18 at TIAA Bank Field in Jacksonville, Florida and run through September 5 in Los Angeles. The bands reportedly also booked time at VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena in Jacksonville to rehearse for the tour. Asked if he is confident that “The Stadium Tour” will finally happen in 2021, Collen said: “I honestly don’t know. I’d say it’s 50/50. If everyone does what they are supposed to do, then we will be there next summer — literally a we...

DIESEL MACHINE Feat. Ex-HALFORD, DAMAGEPLAN, SOIL Members: ‘Evolve’ Album Due In August

Metalville Records set an August 21 release date for the long-awaited comeback album from DIESEL MACHINE, “Evolve”. DIESEL MACHINE was founded in the mid-1990s by former musicians of the L.A. heavies WORLD IN PAIN and ELEVENTH HOUR. The only regular DIESEL MACHINE studio album to date, 2000’s “Torture Test”, was received enthusiastically by fans and critics alike and has retained its absolute cult status to this day. The uncompromising mixture of razor-sharp riffs, hammering rhythms as well as hardcore vocals fully met the spirit of the times an...

Round Hill Music has added another iconic band to its stellar publishing stable with the signing of SKID ROW. The band has inked a worldwide administration deal for their catalog. Of the signing, Round Hill CEO Josh Gruss commented: “SKID ROW is an incredibly powerful band that I first saw play as a 12-year-old, new to the world of live music, at The Ritz in New York City with Japanese rockers EZO opening up. We will do a great job representing their publishing.” Sabo affirmed: “The passion that Josh and everyone at Round Hill has shown towards SKID ROW...

MEGADETH’s DAVID ELLEFSON Discusses His History WIth EMG Pickups (Video)

MEGADETH bassist David Ellefson is featured in the latest episode of EMGtv‘s EMGtv Remote. In the three-minute clip below, Ellefson talks about his history with EMG pickups. For MEGADETH‘s “Rust In Peace” tour in 1990, Ellefson and Jackson collaborated to craft the brand’s first ever five-string bass model that would hold up to the thrash bassist’s crushing tone. This original five-string custom Jackson bass quickly became Ellefson‘s go-to for the next three years of worldwide touring, and eventually served as the foundation for his signature Jackson Concert Bass lineup. To celebrate the 30th anniversary, Jackson has revisited this original design. Earlier this year, Ellefson told Guitar World about his all-new X Series Signature David Ellefson Con...

The Beach House Brings Body Horror to a Pandemic: Review

The Pitch: Terror surrounds two college sweethearts looking for a little R&R at their remote, family beach house. There’s something in the water, and for Emily (Liana Liberato) and Randall (Noah Le Gros), that something may spell their end. Love That Lovecraft: Look, if you couldn’t tell from that semi-bullshit pitch, I’m trying to keep things vague for your sake. Don’t read up on The Beach House. Don’t watch the trailer for The Beach House. And, for Christ’s sake, don’t go Googling for photos of The Beach House. Like every great horror flick, the devil’s in the details, and those details are everywhere right now — mostly because this title is hot, hot, hot. Ever since it dropped at Chattanooga’s digital film festival earlier this summer, horror hounds have been praising the sleek 90-m...

John Mulaney is officially returning to Comedy Central for two new specials. Headlined and executive produced by Mulaney himself, both specials will be continuations of John Mulaney & The Sack Lunch Bunch, his Netflix special released last December. That 2019 children’s musical comedy project was inspired by TV classics like Sesame Street and boasted cameos from David Byrne, Jake Gyllenhaal, Natasha Lyonne, and more. A press statement teases that one of the two upcoming Comedy Central specials will be holiday-themed and “will reunite the cast from the original” Sack Lunch Bunch, so be prepared to again see Byrne running fun science experiments. For Mulaney, these new projects mark his first for Comedy Central in eight years. His last release for the TV network was New in Town back...

My Morning Jacket Announce New Album The Waterfall II, Out This Friday

Five years ago, My Morning Jacket released their most recent album, The Waterfall. At the time, the word was that the alternative rockers had actually recorded enough songs for two full-length albums, but the second collection of tracks never materialized — until now. Today, MMJ have announced The Waterfall II, and it’s coming this Friday, July 10th via ATO Records. The Waterfall and The Waterfall II were recorded during inspiring sessions at what became affectionately known as Panoramic House in Stinson Beach, California. While My Morning Jacket considered putting out all of the music as a triple album, they instead decided to split the two dozen tracks into distinct projects. It was during a walk in the early days of the pandemic lockdown that frontman Jim James rediscovered on...

Movie Theater Chains Sue New Jersey to Reopen, Equating Themselves to Churches

Movie theaters vs churches (photos by Felix Mooneeram and Karl Fredrickson/Unsplash) Satire is dead and reality continues to dance atop its grave. Movie theaters, where folks can check out the latest Adam Sandler film, are now equating their value in society to that of churches, sacred spiritual spaces where people gather to worship. The unusual comparison is being made as reopening guidelines are allowing for churches, but not theaters to resume operations. As of July 6th, AMC, Regal, Cinemark, and other theater giants are suing the state of New Jersey for not being able to open for business due to COVID-19 restrictions. According to the legal complaint led by the National Association of Theatre Owners of New Jersey, their continued closure while churches and malls are allowed to operate ...

The song also lands atop the Latin Pop Airplay chart. Maluma’s “ADMV” hits No. 1 on the Latin Airplay chart as the song jumps 4-1 on the July 11 survey. It’s his 16th No. 1 on the all-genre list which dates back to his former three-week leader “Borro Cassette” in November 2015. “I’m super happy,” Maluma tells Billboard. “This 16th No. 1 is extra special because ‘ADMV’ is a ballad that is very close to my heart and it means a lot at this time when the world is going through so much. It’s also amazing that my first Latin Airplay No. 1 was less than five years ago, so I am so thankful for the fans and everyone at radio that have been so supportive.” “ADMV” (abbreviation for “Amor de mi vida,” which translates to “love of my life”) marks Maluma’s second No. 1 of the year. He previously landed ...
