Martin Scorsese to Co-Direct Documentary on New York Dolls Singer David Johansen

Martin Scorsese and David Tedeschi will co-direct a documentary on New York Dolls singer David Johansen. The yet-to-be-titled documentary does not have a release date but will be released through Showtime Documentary Films. The documentary will chronicle the singer’s nearly 50-year career, which began as a teen in New York City in the ’60s before he rose to fame with the Dolls. It will also look at his turn taking on swing music as Buster Poindexter in the ’80s before pivoting to the blues with the Harry Smiths in the ’90s “I’ve known David Johansen for decades, and his music has been a touchstone ever since I listened to the Dolls when I was making Mean Streets,” Scorsese said in a statement. “Then and now, David’s music captures the energy and excitement of New York City. I often se...

Neil Young Writes Open Letter to Donald Trump Following Mt Rushmore Rally

Ahead of a speech at Mt. Rushmore, President Donald Trump played several of Neil Young’s songs, including “Rockin’ in the Free World” before and after he left the stage. Neil Young, as you might imagine, wasn’t happy about it. Now, Young has written another open letter to Trump, which was posted on his Neil Young Archives site. “Although I have repeatedly asked you to please not use my music because it indicates that I support your agenda, you have always played my songs anyway at your gatherings, with no regard for my rights, even calling me names on twitter,” Young wrote. “Because you are in charge of the Covid 19 response here in the USA, I will not sue you, (as certainly is my right) potentially distracting from your important work at hand protecting and saving American lives,” he cont...

System of a Down’s John Dolmayan: Black Lives Matter “Never Had Legitimacy”

System of a Down drummer John Dolmayan has condemned Black Lives Matter in a new Instagram post, insisting the movement “never had legitimacy” and calling it a “propaganda tool” for the Democratic Party. Dolmayan has been making headlines for the past few months with his right-wing sociopolitical commentary. On Monday night, he posted a picture of Secoreia Turner, an 8-year-old black girl who was killed over the weekend in Atlanta amid a wave of gun violence in the city. Upon her death, Secoreia’s father exclaimed, “They say Black Lives Matter. You killed your own this time.” Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms added, “You can’t blame this on a police officer; you can’t say this is about criminal justice reform. This is about some people carrying some weapons who shot up a car with an 8-yea...

Trans indie songwriter Anjimile has signed on with Father/Daughter Records for the release of her debut album. Titled Giver Taker, it’s due for arrival September 18th. Inspired by “faith, addiction, and Anjimile’s own transition,” the upcoming nine-track project tells a larger story about self-discovery. A statement adds, “Giver Taker captures his ability to not only survive hardships, but grow into the person he was always meant to be.” Born in Dallas, but now based out of Boston, Anjimile infuses his style of indie rock and folk with musical bits of his past and present. Evident are the influences of the African pop passed on by his parents, his time spent in youth choir, and his love of both ’80s classics and recent works from Sufjan Stevens. Most of the recording was done thanks in par...

The Sword’s J.D. Cronise Talks New Compilations, Bootlegging Rare Clutch Tracks, and His Band’s Future

Modern stoner rock owes a major debt to The Sword. Formed in 2003 in Austin, the band’s propensity for Black Sabbath-influenced doom and desert grooves predated the subculture that suddenly emerged from the stoner rock scene in the 2010s. Suddenly, remote fans of bands like Sleep and Electric Wizard were connected by the familiar churning sounds of these bands. The Sword played a vital role in this movement, with their 2006 debut album, Age of Winters, and its lead single, the now legendary “Freya”, cementing their place in doom metal lore. It was a time of resurgence for classic rock, a new era of teenagers were discovering Led Zeppelin and Sabbath, and “Freya” garnered The Sword a cult audience of eager rock fans. Their music even reached Lars Ulrich of Metallica, who would eventually ta...

Thandie Newton Says Amy Pascal Pushed for Black Stereotypes

Thandie Newton is no stranger to the ills of Hollywood, and certainly not the industry’s ensuing racism. In a new interview with Vulture, the Westworld star details a particularly harrowing moment with former Sony producer Amy Pascal. For context, Newton had met with Pascal to audition for Charlie’s Angels, McG’s blockbuster reimagining of the ’70s series that would become one of the highest grossing pictures of 2000. Newton wouldn’t go near it — and with good reason. Below is her account of the meeting: I had a meeting with her, and she said, “Look, I don’t mean to be politically incorrect, but the character as written and you playing the role, I just feel like we’ve got to make sure that it’s believable.” I was like, “What do you mean? What changes would you have to make?” She’s like, “W...

He will also need to do a five-day rehabilitation program as well as pay a “£90 victim surcharge and £85 in prosecution costs.” The news follows his departure from the UK rock band yesterday (July 6), which he said was due to dealing with “personal issues.” The 39-year-old musician appeared at the Leicester Magistrates’ Court where he admitted to attacking, his ex-fancée, Vikki Ager, on April 9. The court proceeding revealed that Ager was hit on the head with a hamster cage, thrown across the room and was “threatened” to be hit with a wooden pallet, BBC reported. CCTV video fo the a...
