“Rough and Rowdy Ways,” “Lamb of God” and “Homegrown” all arrive. Bob Dylan bows atop Billboard‘s Top Rock Albums chart dated July 4 with Rough and Rowdy Ways, followed by Lamb of God, whose self-titled album debuts at No. 2, and Neil Young‘s “Homegrown,” which starts at No. 3. Rough and Rowdy Ways, Dylan’s first album of all original material since 2012’s Tempest, opens with 53,000 equivalent album units earned in the week ending June 25, according to Nielsen Music/MRC Data. Dylan adds his fifth Top Rock Albums No. 1 and first since 2015’s The Bootleg Series, Vol. 12: 1965 – 1966, The Best of the Cutting Edge. (The chart began in the mid-2000s.) The new set also debuts atop Americana/Folk Albums, marking Dylan...
To ring in the big 8-0, Ringo Starr plans on celebrating online with an all-Starr broadcast benefit called “Ringo’s Big Birthday Show” next Tuesday, July 7. Starr traditionally spreads peace and love outside of Capitol Records Tower in Hollywood, Calif. for his birthday, but he’s not letting the coronavirus pandemic stop him from doing so. He recruited fellow living Beatles member Paul McCartney, Ringo Star & His All-Starr Band guitarist Joe Walsh, Gary Clark Jr., Sheryl Crow, Sheila E. and Ben Harper will host at-home performances and feature never-before-seen concert footage. Proceeds raised during “Ringo’s Big Birthday Show” will benefit these four organizations: Black Lives Matter Global Network, the David Lync...
Lenny Kravitz announced on Tuesday (June 30) that his upcoming memoir, Let Love Rule: A Memoir, will be arriving this fall. The book, written alongside co-author David Ritz, will cover the first 25 years of the multi-hyphenate’s life, as he worked through tough struggles at school and extreme tension at home, and found salvation in music. He eventually turns down multiple record deals until he finds his true voice. The story stretches through his experiences in Manhattan’s Upper East Side, Brooklyn’s Bedford-Stuyvesant, Los Angeles’ Baldwin Hills, Beverly Hills and finally France, England and Germany. “I am pleased to announce the release of my book ‘Let Love Rule,’” Kravitz said in a statement. “Writing this memoir has been a beautiful and interesting experienc...
Hayley Williams’ Petals for Armor, which was released in May, is one of our favorite albums of the year. Despite having to cancel her the tour for her first solo album, Williams has seemingly remained upbeat in the face of upheaval. The Paramore singer shared a new behind-the-scenes video for “Sugar on the Rim,” which sees her at work in the studio and also relaxing while at home doing things like noshing on mango sorbet, reading lyrics on her laptop and catching some shut-eye. The footage for the song was compiled over different nights and takes ahead of quarantine. In addition to being one of our favorite albums of the year so far, a bunch of the Petals for Armor songs made our list of the 25 best Hayley Williams songs. Check out the video below. In a GQ profile earlier this year, editor-in-chief Will Welch broke down some of the projects Kanye West had banked, including a song called “Wash Us in the Blood.” Unlike West’s 2019 output, based nearly entirely around his Jesus Is King gospel album and Sunday Service choir assemblies, it featured, according to Welch, “hard drums and Yeezus-like industrial horror noises that consistently shotgun-fires a rapping, dancing, moshing West across the concrete patio like it’s an arena stage.” From that description alone, it seemed like “Wash Us in the Blood” could be the sign of West once again embracing the abrasive edges of his critically adored music as he did in the 2010s, even as he continued to explore the terrain of Christian rap. On Tuesda...
Ellie Goulding is gearing up to release her double-sided album “Brightest Blue” on July 17. Her first LP since 2015’s Delirium, the collection will feature contributions from the likes of Diplo, Swae Lee, and Serpentwithfeet, as well as a posthumous assist from Juice WRLD. But as the anticipation builds, it seems the “Love Me Like You Do” singer can’t contain her excitement. On Tuesday (June 30), Goulding surprise-released “Slow Grenade,” a collaboration with fellow platinum blonde, the multi-platinum singer-songwriter Lauv. Beginning with a minimal, repetitive strumming that moves into a clapping beat, Goulding’s lyrics weave a tale about a relationship that sours, then explodes. She makes creative use of the song’...
