Pearl Jam’s Jeff Ament Announces New EP American Death Squad

It’s been a topsy-turvy year for Pearl Jam, to say the least. Gigaton was released to rave reviews in March, but the band hasn’t been able to tour behind it due to the coronavirus pandemic. While in quarantine, though, bassist Jeff Ament channeled his energy into writing and recording a solo EP, which was announced today (June 26). American Death Squad features four new songs, including the moody and melodic “The Divine Perfume.” “In the days following the postponement of our tour, I found it necessary to find an outlet for the energy we had created going into the tour. Pivot was the word of March. So, every morning, I retreated to the studio with the goal of writing a song every day, no matter how shite. Days of isolating and watching the news of the destruction c...

Slaves Announce They’re Changing Their Band Name

Following suit with the recent name changes by the Dixie Chicks (now The Chicks) and Lady Antebellum (now Lady A), Slaves has been the latest band to announce that they, too, will be renaming their group. “As individuals, as well as a collective, we hold certain virtues close to our hearts — honest and transparency with our fans being some of the most important,” the message started. They went on to say that as they were working on their latest record, To Better Days, the American post-hardcore band discussed “what this new iteration of our band should sound like, what it should look like as well as what it should be called,” and decided that this album would be the last under the band’s moniker. Explaining that it was a reference to the band’s struggles with substance abuse and becoming “...

Incubus Share New Live Version of ‘Agoraphobia’

Nearly 16 years after writing and recording “Agoraphobia,” Incubus is bringing new meaning to “I wanna stay inside” with a quarantine-style live video for the song. The footage from the updated version of the song sees singer Brandon Boyd and guitarist Mike Einziger perform acoustically as black-and-white visuals of Jacques Drouin’s 1975 animation “Mindscape” flash on the screen. The group originally penned the track in a “post 9/11 world,” Boyd says, and singing it now has the same uncomfortable familiarity. “I was lamenting reading the daily news feeds and seeing where things were heading and feeling more and more called to just give in to a sense of hopelessness and just stay inside for the rest of my life,” Boyd says of the song. “By the end of the song I wake up to...

Huey, Rapper Behind ‘Pop, Lock & Drop It,’ Dies at 31

Huey, who’s best known for his 2006 hit “Pop, Lock and Drop It,” was shot and killed last night (June 26). He was 31. The shooting took place before 11pm in the front yard of a home in Kinloch, located in St. Louis County in Missouri, Fox2 Now reported. Huey was then taken to a local hospital but was pronounced dead shortly after his arrival, police said. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported that the other man who was shot has survived and went to the Ferguson Police Department following the shooting. The second victim’s name hasn’t been disclosed. Born Lawrence Franks, Jr., Huey gained critical and national fame when his debut single, “Pop, Lock & Drop It,” released in 2006. Not only did it quickly rise into the top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, but he was also part of the genera...

The Flaming Lips Announce New Album American Head, Share New Single

A few weeks after releasing “Flowers of Neptune 6,” which features guest vocals from Kacey Musgraves, the Flaming Lips have announced their 21st studio album. Titled American Head, the album will feature 13 songs and another appearance by Musgraves on “God and the Policeman.” The album is produced by longtime collaborator Dave Fridmann and the Lips themselves. In addition to the announcement, the group shared a video for “My Religion Is You,” which has a similar steady ballad type of vibe to “Flowers of Neptune 6.” “The music and songs that make up the American Head album are based in a feeling. A feeling that, I think, can only be expressed through music and songs. We were, while creating it, trying to NOT hear it as sounds… but to feel it. Mother’s sacrifice...

Aloe Blacc Drops New Single ‘My Way,’ Announces First Album in 7 Years

Aloe Blacc’s seven-year wait since his Billboard-charting, major-label debut gave him time to become more than just “The Man.” The soul singer returned Friday with his latest single “My Way,” a stripped-back motivational ode to making it through any challenge. The choir-filled track, produced by Jonas Jeberg (“High Hopes”), follows Blacc’s February comeback single “I Do” and, as the singer hopes, will give fans some much-needed inspiration. “My goal was to make sure when you hear ‘My Way,’ that you feel you are part of the song, the fight and spirit of self-determination,” Blacc says. “The lyrics tell about not having it easy, not having support, but finding the way to be your own support, believing in yourself, going for your goals and living your dreams. My wish is that it motivates them...

G-Eazy’s ‘Everything’s Strange Here’ Has Arrived: Stream It Now

After a slight delay, G-Eazy returns with Everything’s Strange Here. Originally scheduled to arrive on June 5, the new set dropped in full at midnight. The health crisis has turned many things inside out, including the Oakland rapper’s release strategy. In fact, if it weren’t for the lockdown, the new album wouldn’t be at our fingertips right now. These Things Happen Too was meant to come first, but, well, the coronavirus changes everything. In a social post last month, G-Eazy wrote: “8 weeks ago I didn’t know I needed to make this. The world has been turned upside down and inside out – but a lot of us have had the fortunate opportunity to self reflect, grow and evolve.” This new project,” he explains, “is a representation of where my heart and head have been at. It’s hon...

Megan Thee Stallion Unleashes ‘Girls in the Hood’: Stream It Now

Megan Thee Stallion apologizes to absolutely no one on her new release “Girls in the Hood,” which dropped at midnight. The Houston rapper is in total control on “Hood,” a statement track on which she lets her thoughts be known from the opening stanza. Channeling Eazy-E’s “Boyz-n-the-Hood” from 1987, Megan fires away: “F— being good, I’m a bad b—-/ I’m sick of motherf—ers tryna tell me how to live.” She teased the track Wednesday on social media, sharing its cover art and an audio cut. The “B.I.T.C.H.” rapper has been using her time wisely — and creatively — during the lockdown. Back in April, she dialled in for a chat with The Tonight Show’s Jimmy Fallon. “I’ve been recording. That’s the best thing about quarantin...

Concertgoers Seek Ticketmaster Terms of Use Click Rates in Antitrust Class Action

Concertgoers suing Ticketmaster and Live Nation over live event ticket fees believe no one actually reads the terms of service that bind them to arbitration and are asking a California federal judge for discovery that could help them prove the websites’ formats are to blame. Olivia Van Iderstine and Mitch Oberstein in April sued Ticketmaster and its parent Live Nation claiming the companies have a monopoly on live events and therefore can charge “extraordinarily high fees” for tickets. The companies responded in June with a motion to compel arbitration. They argue that in order to buy tickets through their sites users have to affirmatively agree to their terms of service at least three times — and those terms include a mandatory arbitration provision and a waiver of class...

Elton John’s Ex-Wife Renate Blauel Seeks High Court Injunction

Elton John’s ex-wife Renate Blauel has launched legal action against the “Rocketman” in London’s High Court. The German-born sound engineer filed paperwork last week to seek an injunction against the legendary British singer, according to various reports. The reasons behind the legal action remain unclear, though such cases are typically grounded in privacy matters or to prevent the publication of personal materials. Blauel’s lawyer confirmed to The Guardian that his client hoped the matter would be resolved “amicably,” but declined to elaborate on the case. John and Blauel became close during the recording sessions for his 1983 album Too Low for Zero album and the pair tied the knot the following year at a ceremony on Valentine’s Day in Sydney, footage of which aired live on Austral...
