Public Enemy (photo by Paul R. Giunta) and Beyoncé Song of the Week breaks down and talks about the song we just can’t get out of our head each week. Find these songs and more on our Spotify New Sounds playlist. America clearly wants music that helps them raise their voices. Don’t believe it? Amid protests, streams of Rage Against the Machine music have increased 62%, enough to send “Killing in the Name”, a 29-year-old song, to top five in the digital streaming charts. Socially conscious outfit Run the Jewels have seen their fourth installment find the Billboard 200 top 10 and are all over mid-year lists. The music we love has its roots in rebellion and hard times, so it’s not surprising that something innate in us turns to our earbuds and streaming devices when the world seems to be circl...
Kurt Cobain’s guitar from Nirvana’s iconic MTV Unplugged episode sold for a record-setting amount of $6,010,000 at a charity auction on Saturday. The 1959 Martin D-18E acoustic-electric guitar far surpassed its original estimate of $1 million dollars. The sale set five new world records, including the most expensive guitar ever sold and the most expensive piece of band memorabilia ever sold. The buyer was Peter Freedman, founder of RØDE Microphones, who plans to display the guitar in a worldwide exhibition tour, with all proceeds going to the performing arts organizations. In addition to the instrument itself, the guitar came with its original hard-shell case — decorated by Cobain with a flyer from Poison Idea’s 1990 album Feel the Darkness, three baggage claim ticket stubs, and an Alaska ...
HI-LO has been quiet in recent months, but Oliver Heldens‘ evil tech twin is clawing back with a vengeance next month. Using his alter ego’s Twitter, Heldens recently took to social media to announce that he is releasing a new single under his HI-LO alias next month. “ZEUS,” which will arrive on Friday, July 3rd, is the first official solo HI-LO release of 2020 and also the first since the release of “Poseidon” back in October 2019. In his Twitter announcement, HI-LO also divulged that the single will be distributed by deadmau5‘s mau5trap banner, making for a mouthwatering release and pouring gasoline on the fire of his fans’ anticipation. However, as of the time of writing, HI-LO hasn’t offered up any more details a...
A message that was first used in an attempt to contact intelligent life is now being turned into music. That’s right, if you thought you’d seen it all when it comes to clever sampling and creative audio to MIDI conversions, Australian electronic duo, The Avalanches, are about to take things a step further. It’s unknown whether Frank Drake, creator of the 1974 Arecibo Message, envisioned his work being turned into a song several decades later, but that is exactly what’s been teased in The Avalanches’ latest post. The astronomer and astrophysicist’s now-famous radio wave message was originally beamed to a star cluster 25,000 light-years away. The message contained basic information about humanity and planet Earth. At the time of t...
SOFI TUKKER do what they do best in their latest transformative remix, this time taking Dillon Francis and BabyJake‘s “You Do You” for a spin. Like clockwork, the Grammy-nominated duo added just the spark the original needed to shake up and keep a late night dance floor grooving. Flowing, ambient guitar riffs fade over pitched up vocals from BabyJake on this moody after-hours remix. SOFI TUKKER fills the track’s low end with a bouncing bassline, effectively injecting the dance-inducing energy that has brought their name to prominence in recent years. The remix finds tone alignment with the song’s original message, which according to BabyJake, ruminates on the struggles of finding a committed, stable relationship. SOFI TUKKER’s latest ...

The family of Tom Petty has issued a cease and desist to Donald Trump over the unauthorized usage of Petty’s song “I Won’t Back Down” during a rally in Tulsa, Oklahoma on Saturday. Trump took the stage as “I Won’t Back Down” played over the speakers. According to a statement released by Petty’s family, “Trump was in no way authorized to use this song to further a campaign that leaves too many Americans and common sense behind.” “Both the late Tom Petty and his family firmly stand against racism and discrimination of any kind,” the statement continued. “Tom Petty would never want a song of his used for a campaign of hate. He liked to bring people together.” The family said it was issuing a cease and desist notice to Trump’s campaign. “We would hate for fans that are marginalized by the...
Ansel Elgort has denied allegations that he sexually assaulted a teenage girl in 2014. Earlier this week, a Twitter user named Gabby accused the actor of assaulting her when she was 17 years old. Gabby claimed Elgort, who was 20 years old at the time, initially solicited nude photos from her via social media. They later met in person and had sex. However, after Gabby asked to stop, she said Elgort ignored her. “Instead of asking me if I wanted to stop having sex knowing it was my first time and I was sobbing in pain and I didn’t want to do it the only words that came out of his mouth were, ‘We need to break you in.’ I WASNT there in that moment mentally. I dissociated myself and just felt like my mind was gone and I was in shock,” Gabby wrote. “I couldn’t leave, I was only 5’2″ and 98 poun...
Eagle-eyed Star Wars fans love to boast that they could spot Mark Hamill anywhere thanks to the wide range of voice and acting roles he’s accumulated over the years. That’s not always true though. The Luke Skywalker actor made his coolest secret cameo yet last year that nobody noticed: he was a droid in the fifth episode of The Mandalorian. During the finale of Disney Gallery: The Mandalorian, a behind-the-scenes docuseries about the making of the smash hit Disney Plus show, it was revealed that Hamill appeared in the series as the cantina bartender in Episode 5, reports Deadline. The droid — named EV-9D9, according to creator Jon Favreau — was uncredited and Hamill masked his voice for the role. In the scene, the Mandalorian walks into the cantina and approaches the bartender to ask about...
Coming into Saturday’s campaign rally in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Donald Trump proudly boasted that over one million people had signed up for tickets. But when the day actually came, there were plenty of empty seats to be found inside the arena, and literally not one person showed up for the outdoor events. Trump’s campaign blamed the low attendance on protestors who blocked the entrance to the arena. However, as the New York Times reports, the inflated ticket requests may have been the direct result of a prank carried out by K-pop fans. K-pop fans, along with their allies on TikTok, worked together to register potentially hundreds of thousands of fake ticket requests as a prank. One of the organizers behind the prank, a YouTube host named Elijah Daniel, told the Times that “It spread mostly ...
