Source: Screenshot / Jay Pharoah Jay Pharoah found fame as a former cast member of SNL and has parlayed that notoriety into a booming acting career, but even that didn’t shield him from the cruel reality of racism in America. In a new short film, the actor and comedian detailed how he came close to losing his life at the hands of the police simply for being a Black man. Working with @TheOnlyCarey to shoot the video piece, Pharoah is seen narrating the incident in question, which he says took place a week before Ahmaud Arbery was murdered in Georgia while jogging. While going about his workout routine in Los Angeles and getting in some exercise, Pharoah shares security video footage of Los Angeles officers surrounding him with their guns drawn. At one especially uncomfortable portion of the...

Liam Gallagher once almost set his brother Noel’s house on fire — and that was before Oasis’ dramatic split. The singer recalled the incident during a visit to Peter Crouch’s show, Save Our Summer (via NME). “Our kid had a house [in Ibiza] once, years ago, which I nearly set fire to cause they lent it [to] me,” Liam explained. “So I get there, I’m getting a bit giddy and I’ve gone, ‘this is nuts innit’, got the drinks out, got a cig out, and it was like right on the sea, and I lit up and then I flicked it, it’s gone down the cliff… and the next minute there’s loads of fire.” “We’ve not even unpacked our bags so I’m there running out with loads of pots and pans just launching at it because you couldn’t go down to it,” he continued. “I’d only been there about 10 minu...
Forbes has revealed its annual list of the highest paid celebrities and a couple representatives from the dance music community have made the cut. The Chainsmokers took the 21st spot on the list just barely behind the Jonas Brothers, as the “Closer” producers earned themselves a windfall of $68 million. It turns out having the fourth most streamed song on Spotify of the last decade and a stake in JAJA Tequila has continued to pay healthy dividends for the duo. Impressively, the two placed ahead of fellow streaming giant Ed Sheeran, who broke U2‘s record for the highest grossing tour ever last year. Marshmello has found himself in similarly favorable straits, netting the 35th spot on the list. The masked hit-making machine pulled in $56 million, just barely eking out ...
We had the distinct pleasure of chatting with DJ, producer, audio engineer, and Bettermaker owner Maro Music about what music he has in the pipeline, his radio show, and his experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic. EDM.COM: You’ve just hit episode #100 of your weekly “Addicted To Music” syndicated radio mixshow….congrats! In an era, post-pandemic, when it seems the entire EDM world has gone online (because it has), how do you make your mixshow unique? We’re also diggin’ your new remix of Dua Lipa’s “Don’t Start Now.” MARO MUSIC: My show is always about fun, about putting you in a specific mood. You cannot go to a club, so I can bring a little bit of club to you. Being on lockdown does not mean you are not allowed to have fun. Dance around your room, your car, outside your home. No on...
Margo Price was supposed to drop her third album That’s How Rumors Get Started on May 8, but like so many other artists, was forced to postpone its release date due to the coronavirus pandemic. During an interview for CBS This Morning, the singer-songwriter divulged that the delay was a little more personal — her husband and guitarist Jeremy Ivey contracted COVID-19. “He was in a worse state I’ve ever seen him in my life,” Price said of his illness. “He got thin and frail and he was like sleeping 12 to 14 hours a day, and I was pretty terrified.” Thankfully, Ivey is recovering and just this past week has started to get “back to being more like himself.” And That’s How Rumors Get Started is slated to come out on July 10. Aside from the interview, Price performed two...
As a wave of media companies are pulling content that could be deemed offensively racist, the BBC-owned UKTV has removed a classic episode of the sitcom Fawlty Towers for its use of racial slurs. The show’s star and writer John Cleese has spoken out against the removal, saying executives trying “to hang onto their jobs” are “too stupid to see that” the episode was mocking the derogatory language, not supporting it. In the episode, entitled “The Germans”, Cleese’s Basil Fawlty has a conversation with Ballard Berkeley’s Major Gowen. The Major recalls a time he took a woman to a cricket game played by an Indian team, during which he uses racial epithets when referring to Indians (“w*gs”) and West Indians (“n*ggers”). While the episode is remembered fondly for its repetition of the phrase “don...
