RATING: 8/10 Seemingly out of nowhere, PARALYDIUM have conjured one of the melodic metal albums of the year. Armed with the same rhythm section as fellow Swedes’ DYNAZTY, who have already dropped an absolute melodic-ripper this year, this band operate on similar territory, but “Worlds Beyond” is a deceptively unconventional beast. Herein, overwrought balladry, ultra-uplifting power metal and dark, brooding tech-prog wizardry all get a fair share of attention, but the resultant blend is far more absorbing than the potential sum of its parts might infer. Opening track “Within The Sphere” is a brilliantly bombastic entry point, but it’s one of this record’s more straightforward moments: a palate-cleanser, you might say, in preparation for more extrava...

GWAR have been their usual unusual selves during quarantine. They’ve appeared on CNN giving an update to pandemic life, encouraged fans to drink bleach (as a joke of course) and popped up in a Frank Iero video. That said, as statues of Confederate leaders and other historically problematic figures are being torn down and replaced worldwide, GWAR fans have a request. A new petition is circulating the web, calling for a statue of GWAR’s late leader Oderus Urungus (Dave Brockie) to replace a preexisting statue of Confederate leader Robert E. Lee in Richmond, Virginia, which is also the band’s hometown. While the notion of taking down statues shouldn’t come as a surprise after one of slave-trader Edward Colston was tossed into a river in England and a Christopher Columbus s...
OutKast fans are rejoicing at the return of Andre 3000. And while 3 Stacks hasn’t hopped on a new track in a bit, the legendary lyricist instead resurfaced to use his platform to raise money for the Movement for Black Lives, an organization committed to ending police brutality and racial injustice. And he’s doing it with some new merch: 13 variations of a long-sleeve T-shirt to be exact. “Something very important is happening all over the world and it is happening to all of us,” Andre wrote on his site. “How does it make you feel?” “For three days, a selection of shirts inspired by a collection of my jumpsuits will be sold and 100% of net proceeds will be donated to Movement for Black Lives to aid in their fight to end police brutality and racial injustice against Black people. T...
On Tuesday, a Twitter user who has since deleted their account said that Rage Against The Machine — a band whose name should speak for itself — and Tom Morello were “ruining” their fan base by sharing “political BS.” “I used to be a fan until your political opinions came out,” the fan wrote. “Music is my sanctuary and the last thing I want to hear is political BS when I’m listening to music. As far as I’m concerned, you and Pink are completely done. Keep running your mouth and ruining your fan base.” Well, Morello responded. And that’s when Twitter did its thing. “Scott!! What music of mine were you a fan of that DIDN’T contain ‘political BS,’” Morello said. “I need to know so I can delete it from the catalog.” Scott!! What music of mine were you a fan of that DIDN’T c...
The Grammys’ Best Urban Contemporary Album category will now be called Best Progressive R&B Album, the Recording Academy announced on Wednesday morning (June 10). “There were some uncomfortable feelings around [the term urban],” Harvey Mason, Jr., chair & interim president/CEO of the Recording Academy, told Billboard. “I think it’s been a gradual shift within in the R&B community. It’s been discussed [within the Academy]. It’s been a little contentious at times.” Republic Records announced last week that the “urban” will no longer be used. But Mason pointed out to Billboard that the deadline for awards and nomination proposals was due back in March. So removing “urban” from the category was already happening before the record label’s announcement. Aside from the category change...
The Stooges fans will be happy to hear that Third Man Records is releasing The Stooges’ Live At Goose Lake: August 8, 1970. It will showcase previously-unheard soundboard recording of the original Stooges’ final show together — honoring the performance’s 50th anniversary. The limited-edition colored vinyl will come in a variety of colors. The Rough Trade edition will be purple vinyl with a standard LP jacket while the indie exclusive version will be on cream-colored vinyl with a screen-printed LP jacket. CD and digital version of the album will also be available. The recording was found on a 1/4″ stereo two-track tape in the basement of a Michigan farmhouse. It was then restored by Vance Powell (The White Stripes, Chris Stapleton) and mastered by Bill Skibbe at Third Man Mastering. The lin...
Paul Banks swears that he never intended to form another band. The singer-guitarist had a busy enough work schedule with his main outfit, Interpol, not to mention other diversions like Banks and Steelz — his side project with rapper-turned-film-director RZA — and solo albums as Julian Plenti and under his own name, like Banks in 2012. But he couldn’t help himself with his new trio Muzz — the chance to work with his childhood guitar-whiz chum Josh Kaufman (of Bonny Light Horseman renown) and their mutual percussionist pal Matt Barrick just proved too tempting. And his instinct was on the money. The eponymous Muzz debut is a moody, melodic masterpiece, falling somewhere between the delicate melancholy of the Blue Nile and the sinister atmospherics of vintage The The, which is held ...
The longer people have been staying at home, the more musicians have been putting more creativity into their livestream performances. Sia proved that during her performance of “Together” on The Tonight Show: At Home Edition last night (June 9). Donning her signature wig in pink and yellow, Sia teamed up with her frequent collaborator, dancer Maddie Ziegler, and brought a whimsical party to our screens. From filling the room with bubbles to having a pancake fight, Sia gave us the same energy that she exudes in one of her crazy colorful videos. They even give a shout out to Jimmy Fallon’s line of children’s books. “Together” is the first single off Sia’s directorial debut, Music, based on Dallas Clayton’s children’s book. Aside from sitting in the director’s chair, she also penned the 10 tra...
Veteran singer/songwriter Grant-Lee Phillips will be returning with his first new album since 2018’s Widdershins. Lightning, Show Us Your Stuff, his 10th studio album, continues to build on his gentle songwriting that’s defined his career. Phillips has shared the video for “Straight to the Ground” from that album and is the second song to be shared from the upcoming 10-song collection, following “Lowest Low.” The song has a methodical build and the lyric video, which you can see below, is shot in black-and-white and features footage of a small town out west. [embedded content] “I tapped into my own youth to render a character whose small-town upbringing finds them feeling hemmed in and disillusioned. Imagining an idyllic vista out west, that all seems achingly out of re...
As American protesters took to the streets to mourn the death of George Floyd, they found an unexpected ally: K-pop fans. Floyd died May 25 after a police officer pressed his knee into his neck for several minutes even after he stopped moving. K-pop fans galvanized by police brutality and political disappointments swiftly mobilized, re-purposing their usual platforms and hashtags from boosting their favorite stars to backing the Black Lives Matter movement. They flooded right-wing hashtags and police apps with short video clips and memes of their K-pop stars. In a tweet Thursday to its 26 million fans, South Korean boy band BTS said it opposes racial discrimination and violence and announced a $1 million donation to Black Lives Matter. Fans quickly followed suit with the hashtag #MatchAMil...
