This Face Mask Sums Up What Every Music Fan is Thinking Now

For all intents and purposes, the 2020 concert calendar has been wiped clear by the coronavirus, with most every major tour and festival having either been canceled or postponed. While concert promoters are experimenting ways to present live music, such as concert drive-ins and audience-less livestreams, it’s unlikely we’ll find ourselves together in a crowded space until at least 2021 (and even that may be ambitious). In other words, we’ll see you in the pit… eventually. Available now in packs of two, four, and six, this “See You in the Pit… Eventually!” is one of four designs available as part of a capsule of specialty designed face masks supporting Consequence of Sound, an independently owned company, and MusiCares’ COVID-19 Artist Relief Fund. The mask is reusable and washable, made in...

Vanic and K.Flay Unveil Melancholy New Single, “So Slow” [PREMIERE]

The time it takes to heal from heartbreak can be excruciating and seems to last forever. Reminiscing on the good times and mourning love lost go hand in hand with those circumstances. After a short break from releasing music, bass music veteran Vanic has teamed up with GRAMMY-nominated musician, vocalist, and songwriter K.Flay on a new single that explores those painful experiences and encapsulates what the heartbroken may be feeling after such events.  “So Slow” is a melodic future bass tune that not only captures the essence of heartbreak through its melancholy and pensive lyrics from K.Flay, but also mirrors that emotion within the production itself. The main section’s gloomy synth wails out a dejected melody that carries the weight of K.Flays ...

What Place Will Virtual Tipping Have in the Post-Pandemic Music Industry?

In China, virtual tipping provides a widespread, legitimate revenue stream for artists. Some think the pandemic will help (finally) normalize the practice Stateside. Andy Bothwell, a Brooklyn-based artist who performs under the moniker Astronautalis, has an online hub that lists links to his music, social media accounts and merch site. But after the coronavirus pandemic cut off the touring income he relies on to pay his bills, he added two new links to the top of the list: His Cash App and Venmo accounts, allowing fans to send him money directly. “I’m curious to see if I keep it there,” he says. His decision is more than a curiosity. As the pandemic has shut down economies across the globe, many artists are asking fans directly for cash — and music companies like SoundCloud and Spoti...

Why Madonna Brought 14 Cape Verdean Drummers on Tour – And What They Taught Her

In 2017, Madonna thought she was moving to Portugal to “be a soccer mom,” but instead, the 61-year-old icon found inspiration for her then-upcoming album, Madame X, thanks to a friend she calls her “musical plug,” Dino d’Santiago. One night, the Cape Verde-born, Lisbon-based singer — who coached Madonna on how to speak Portuguese and sing in Portuguese and Creole — had arranged a concert for her by Batukadeiras Orquesta, a group of female drummers specializing in batuka, a rhythmic call-and-response style created in Cape Verde during the early days of the slave trade. “I’d never seen anything like it, never heard anything like it. So of course, I couldn’t get it out of my head,” says Madonna. She invited several members of the collective to perform on her album and even brought some to the...

How Tom Holkenborg Returned to His Dance Music Roots for the Score of a New Netflix Series

In 1998, Ibiza was becoming one of the world’s freshest and most exciting destinations for dance music. The music was new, the nights were long and the tan lines were deep. Tom Holkenborg was there, performing sets under his DJ name Junkie XL. In the decades that have followed, Holkenborg’s career has evolved from producing tracks to scoring, with his work soundtracking dozens of movies and television shows including Mad Max: Fury Road, Deadpool, The Dark Tower, Terminator: Dark Fate and the recently released Scooby Doo flick, Scoob! But arguably, none of these projects have fused Holkenborg’s history as a DJ with this current profession as well as his recent project White Lines. Premiering on Netflix May 15, the series tells the story of a woman who t...
