HipHopWired Featured Video Source: YouTube / Youtube Kendrick Lamar manages to up the ante on his already highly-anticipated new album, Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers. The Compton rapper dropped a new song and video for “The Heart Part 5” from the forthcoming new project. While his fifth album drop this Friday, on Sunday (May 8), he dropped a new video loaded with bars and some chilling video effects. The visual starts off simply with a pensive-looking Lamar rapping slightly off-center in front of the camera with a maroon backdrop (and an initial written message of “I am All of us.”). But as he kicks his bars over a subtle instrumental that samples Marvin Gaye’s “I Want You” he first transforms into the distinctive face of OJ Simpson. Olivia Rodrigo continues to pay tribute to her influences while on tour. The teen pop superstar covered No Doubt’s 1995 classic “Just a Girl” at her shows at the Metropolitan Opera House in Philadelphia over the weekend, days after she was photographed with No Doubt frontwoman Gwen Stefani at the Met Gala in New York. Rodrigo’s performance is energetic and driving, delivering the urgency and angst of “Just a Girl” to an audience that likely wasn’t even alive during its heyday. [embedded content][embedded content] During the Sour tour, Rodrigo has incorporated several covers of hits from her alternative pop predecessors, including Veruca Salt’s “Seether” and Avril Lavigne’s “Complicated.” The North American leg of the Sour tour will continue through May 27, ending in San Fransisco. Kevin Morby grew up in Overland Park, Kansas, a suburb roughly 20 minutes outside of downtown Kansas City. We’ve both lived here at different points in time, and as we chat in Union Station, a historic landmark in the heart of the city, we instantly make connections over high schools, street intersections, and formative memories. The indie-folk singer-songwriter has used places as a leitmotif throughout his music, and his fascination with them is evident. Many of his records draw direct inspiration from them. His debut album, 2013’s Harlem River, explores his move to New York City; 2016’s Singing Saw tethers itself to Los Angeles, where Morby moved after New York; 2020’s Sundowner pays tribute to Morby’s home in Kansas City and his eventual return to it. There’s something poetic about...
Jethro Lazenby, a model and the son of musician Nick Cave, had died at the age of 31. No cause of death was announced. Cave confirmed his son’s passing in a statement today (May 9). “With much sadness, I can confirm that my son, Jethro, has passed away,” he said. “We would be grateful for family privacy at this time.” Lazenby was living in Australia at the time of his death. His mother is Melbourne-based model Beau Lazenby, who was in a relationship with Cave when Lazenby was born in 1991. Cave told The Guardian in 2008 that he didn’t meet Jethro until Jethro was around seven or eight years old. “To my eternal regret, I didn’t make much contact with Jethro in the early years, but I now have a great relationship with him,” he said. Lazenby was released on bail last Thursday from M...
Arcade Fire appeared on Saturday Night Live this week, taking to the stage the night after the release of their new album WE. They performed “Unconditional I (Lookout Kid)” and “The Lightning I, II” during the Benedict Cumberbatch–hosted episode. They also played “End of the Empire I-IV (Sagittarius A*)” as the credits rolled at the end of the show. After wrapping up the second song of the evening, Win Butler addressed the crowd with a message seemingly in support of abortion rights. “A woman’s right to choose forever and ever and ever, amen,” he said. Watch it all happen below. This week’s Saturday Night Live stop marked the band’s fifth time as the musical guest on the show, following appearances in 2007, 2010, 2013, and 2018. Arcade Fire announced WE in March with the release of “The Li...

The Radiohead side-project The Smile has unveiled yet another new song, “Thin Thing,” ahead of the Friday (May 13) release of their anticipated debut album, A Light for Attracting Attention. The track is accompanied by a creepy, black and white stop-motion animation video directed by Cristobal Leon and Joaquín Cocina, which features vintage technology being destroyed by an unseen force, severed arms crawling across the ground and the disembodied heads of Thom Yorke, Jonny Greenwood and Tom Skinner doubling as the tops of barren trees. [embedded content][embedded content] Leon and Cocina spent six months assembling the video, of which they said, “Hearing the song for the first time, we imagined a frenetic fluid that carries machines, pieces of human bodies and carnivorous plants. When prese...
