Song of the Week: The Smile Embrace Dramatic Balladry on “Free In the Knowledge”

Song of the Week breaks down and talks about the song we just can’t get out of our head each week. Find these songs and more on our Spotify Top Songs playlist. For our favorite new songs from emerging artists, check out our Spotify New Sounds playlist. This week, The Smile unleash a devastating, melancholy rumination on living with the consequences of the world around us.  It’s as if Thom Yorke decided about a decade ago to commit himself to releasing some of the most devastating music of his career — which is kind of like a Carolina Reaper deciding to be spicier, or the Mariana Trench deciding that it’s not quite deep enough. There’s “Dawn Chorus” from his 2019 solo record ANIMA, “Unmade” from the Suspiria soundtrack, and pretty much everything off of Radiohead’s ...

Kerry Washington Cast in The Simpsons as Bart’s New Teacher

Bart Simpson has had a revolving door of burnout substitute teachers since the 2013 retirement of the beloved Ms. Krabappel, but now, The Simpsons has finally found an adequate permanent replacement. The sitcom has cast Kerry Washington as Rayshelle Peyton, Bart’s new teacher (via Entertainment Weekly). Washington’s Ms. Peyton is a kind, competent educator and a complete departure from the jaded Ms. Krabappel (voiced by the late Marcia Wallace). While Ms. Krabappel served as Bart’s foil more than his role model, Ms. Peyton takes a different approach to education — by actually teaching. “She’s a little too honest, in a very, very sweet, quirky way,” Simpsons co-executive producer Carolyn Omine told EW. “She has a very ambitious project, and she seems like she’s going to be able to at l...

Martin Scorsese’s Film Foundation Launches Free Virtual Screening Room for Restored Films

There’s a new way to watch classic films and it’s all thanks to Martin Scorsese’s nonprofit The Film Foundation, which is launching a new virtual screening room to show restored movies for free to the public. The online room will hold its first screening on May 9th of the 1945 romance I Know Where I’m Going! starring Dame Wendy Hiller and Roger Livesey. Following its premiere event, The Film Foundation will then screen a new film on the second Monday of every month, with the month’s selection available for just 24 hours. Additional films on the curated schedule include Fellini’s iconic 1954 drama La Strada, 1974’s Kummatty, the 1961 Western One-Eyed Jacks directed by Marlon Brando, a double feature of film noir classics Detour and The Chase, the 1952 version of Moulin Rouge by John Huston,...

Scott Weiland’s Son Noah on Comparisons to His Father: “People Want to See Me Be a Statistic”

A year and a half ago, Suspect208 looked like they might just be the next big thing. The young band was fronted by Noah Weiland (son of late Stone Temple Pilots singer Scott Weiland), and also featured London Hudson (son of Slash) on drums, Tye Trujillo (son of Metallica’s Robert Trujillo) on bass, and Niko Tsangaris on guitar. Unfortunately, it all fell apart for the group just months after getting off the ground. After showing promise in late 2020 with their first two singles, “Long Awaited” and “All Black,” the band announced in early 2021 that they had parted ways with Noah, citing his “dark path of drug use.” They attempted to continue with new singer Cody Houston, but eventually broke up completely soon thereafter. In a new interview with iHeartRadio, Noah opened up about his ouster ...

Detroit collective the Armed have released a remix of “Ketamine” by Princess Goes to the Butterfly Museum—the band fronted by Dexter and Six Feet Under actor Michael C. Hall. The group also includes former Wallflowers drummer Peter Yanowitz and keyboardist Matt Katz-Bohen, who has played with Blondie. Listen to the Armed’s rendition of “Ketamine” below. “‘Ultrapop’ is more than a critically-acclaimed, game-changing, genre-defining album,” the Armed’s Dan Greene said in a statement, referring to the group’s 2021 record. “It is a language. It is a tool set. It is its own vernacular. This adaptation of ‘Ketamine’ is an exercise in translation. And in the spirit of the dialect, the result is all things, at once. It is delicate and earnest. It is exhilarating. Terrifying. It is excessive and ru...

The Going Merry and Other Ships From ‘One Piece’ Live-Action Adaptation Surfaces

Highly anticipated by fans of the manga/anime source material, shooting on Netflix‘s One Piece live-action adaptation is now underway. Thanks to Twitter user @OP_Netflix_Fan, we now have a first look at the Straw Hat Pirates’ first full-sized ship, The Going Merry, along with other ships and places from the show. The real-life version of the ship faithfully replicates its jib and a central steer rudder orientation, complete with its signature sheep figurehead. Other ships photographed on set include The Red Force used by Shanks and the Red Hair Pirates, and the beloved Baratie ocean-going restaurant. Images also show Loguetown, Windmill Village and Gol D. Roger’s execution platform. From the imagery, it appears that the One Piece live-action adaptation has developed an accurate yet realist...
