Sergio Vega Further Explains Deftones Exit, Details His New Project

Bassist Sergio Vega has opened up about his departure from Deftones, while also detailing his new musical project. Vega had effectively left the Deftones over a year ago, but only went public with the news in March. In a lengthy video statement, Vega explained that he never became an official member of the band and contract disagreements regarding his position in the group led to his exit. Vega was initially hired by Deftones to fill-in for Chi Cheng, who was in a coma following a 2008 car accident. He remained in the band following Cheng’s passing in 2013. As Vega tells it, cutting him into the official Deftones lineup would have affected the sha...

Bloody Wonder

If Laurie Anderson and Art of Noise had a love child, it might resemble I Speak Machine, the experimental music and audio-visual project of vocalist Tara Busch and filmmaker Maf Lewis. Thoroughly original in its own right, I Speak Machine has spent the last decade stirring our subconscious and defining the conventional, combining music technology and vintage synths with striking, can’t-look-away visuals that reflect and imprint themselves on our deepest and darkest dreams. It’s saturated, cinematic and unforgettable. And bloody. Sometimes I Speak Machine gets very bloody. “Visually it gets right to the point, which is to unsettle and release,” frontwoman Tara Busch explains. “The image of blood dripping and splashing is what this music looks and feels like, if that makes sense.” She n...

Watch Jack White Share Advice From Prince on Colbert

Jack White went to the The Late Show with Stephen Colbert to discuss his recent engagement and to perform “What’s The Trick?” [embedded content][embedded content] White has done so much recently, it was only fitting he talk to Colbert to hash it all out. Before diving in, Colbert makes fun of White for rarely joining talk shows (“They’re contractually tax-related obligations once a year,” said White) and White’s new blue do (“If you stick out you’re tongue you got red, white, and blue, you’re an American flag,” Colbert said.) White performed the National Anthem at the Detroit Tigers game only hours before proposing and marrying his wife, Olivia Jean, on stage at his homecoming concert last week. Because White’s anthem rendition went well and the Tigers won the game, he felt all signs ...

Anthony Carrigan Loves Surprises

Polite and cheerful Chechen mobster NoHo Hank is so singular a character that it’s easy to forget that Anthony Carrigan, the actor who portrays him on the HBO comedy Barry, actually hails from Boston. When SPIN caught up with Carrigan about what’s in store for the upbeat murderer on the series’ third season, it seems like even Carrigan loses the distinction for a second. “I almost slipped into Hank there,” he laughs as the Chechen accent slithers into a description of Hank’s complicated friendship with discharged Marine-turned-hitman Barry Berkman, played by series co-creator Bill Hader. Not that anyone can get enough of the character that, at one point, was going to be offed in the pilot. Regularly referred to as the show’s scene-stealer, NoHo Hank has become the character whose storyline...

Johnny Depp Testifies Ex- Amber Heard Attacked Him, He Never Hit Back

Actor Johnny Depp scoffed at the notion during court testimony Wednesday that his constant quarrels with ex-wife Amber Heard would ever prompt him to hit her, and insisted on cross-examination that her allegations devastated his career. “Violence isn’t necessary,” Depp said from the stand during his libel lawsuit against Heard, his second day of testimony. “Why would you hit someone to make them agree with you?” Heard has accused Depp of physically and sexually assaulting her on multiple occasions before and during their brief marriage. The former “Pirates of the Caribbean” star sued after Heard, who is also an actor, made an indirect reference to those accusations in an op-ed piece she wrote for The Washington Post. Depp addressed Heard’s accusations in detail Wednesday. Heard has said th...
