HipHopWired Featured Video Source: Frazer Harrison / Getty After a two-year hiatus due to the pandemic, the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival has returned to California, and rapper Big Sean had a little bit of news for fans after he kicked off the first night of the festival along with Friday night’s headliner Harry Styles. Basically, fans on Twitter (as well as reporters at TMZ) pointed out that, while Sean wasn’t a headliner, he drew a crowd around the same size as that of Styles and he put on a show that was equally as epic. Sean appeared to agree, but he also felt the need to point out that, despite all of this, Styles got paid significantly more than he did. Related Stories According to Dlisted, Sean deleted a post he shared along with the TMZ article which reported that Sean’s...

A Spitfire, Skateboarding Rapper From Atlanta: This Is Mercury

By Arielle Lana LeJarde The experience of coming of age is often captured in art and popular culture. Tales of teen heartbreak, unpredictable change, and finding yourself attempt to mine our collective pangs of adolescence or feelings of nostalgia. But in 21-year-old Mercury‘s latest project, Tabula Rasa, the Atlanta-based rapper doesn’t need to try. The album strikes on a visceral level, each song expressing the elastic emotions of growing up. Antithetical to its Latin translation of “blank slate,” Tabula Rasa isn’t meant to serve as a new beginning for Mercury. At the top of 2021, “Slob on My Kat,” Mercury’s raunchy and booty-bouncing response to Tear da Club Up Thugs and Three 6 Mafia’s “Slob on My Knob,” was named Pitchfork’s must-hear rap song of the day. Eight months later...

Editors Add Blanck Mass to Lineup, Release New Single “Heart Attack”: Stream

Editors have promoted longtime collaborator Blanck Mass, aka English electronic producer Benjamin John Power, to a full-time band member and ushered in a new era with their first single in three years, “Heart Attack.” Guitarist and lead vocalist Tom Smith describes their latest offering as “a song of obsession, about losing yourself in someone; a love song, a morbid love song.” Though the subject is dour, there’s no denying the passion behind it as Smith unleashes the blistering refrain of “No one will love you more than I do/ I can promise you that.” The cinematic production’s collage of guitar syncopations, sweeping synths, and propulsive drums form a sheen around the band’s sharp-edged sound, and yet it doesn’t come across as an attempt at dulling it but rather a method to see the barbs...

As reported yesterday, Randy Blythe tested positive for COVID-19, leading Lamb of God to announce that Chimaira singer Mark Hunter and a “few friends” would handle vocals for the band at Tuesday night’s show in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Those “few friends” included Matt Heafy and Anders Fridén of support acts Trivium and In Flames, respectively. Blythe contracted COVID after just six shows on Lamb of God’s co-headlining “Metal Tour of the Year” with Megadeth. Instead of canceling any gigs, Lamb of God are proceeding for the time being with Hunter and company helping out on vocals. Last night saw Lamb of God play an abbreviated 10-song set (they had been playing 12 songs with Blythe), with Hunter handling vocals on seven of the tunes, including newer tracks like “Memento Mori” and classics li...

Thank you for listening and please enjoy the beautiful music video about human cells.” Featuring the catchy melodies for which Purity Ring has become known, “graves” builds toward a dark chorus contrasting with James’ sweet vocals. “We’ll w...

Netflix Stock Price Drops 20% After Announcing Loss of 200K Subscribers

Netflix announced a loss of 200,000 subscribers during the first quarter of 2022, which sent its stock plummeting more than 20%. The dip marks the streamer’s first decline in subscribers in over ten years, with the last reported loss taking place in October 2011. In a letter to shareholders, the company informed them that its “revenue growth has slowed considerably.” “Streaming is winning over linear, as we predicted, and Netflix titles are very popular globally,” Netflix continued. “However, our relatively high household penetration – when including the large number of households sharing accounts – combined with competition, is creating revenue growth headwinds.” The company went on to say that the boost in subscribers from COVID had obscured the picture. Previously, it had predicted a fi...
