Epic Games has launched its next-generation video game engine, Unreal Engine 5. Arriving almost two years after it was first announced, the engine is now released for developers to download and promises a slew of new tools and hyper-realistic graphics. In its release, the company called Unreal Engine 5 “the world’s most open and advanced real-time 3D creation tool.” Alongside easy-to-use UI, the engine contains Nanite, a “virtualized micropolygon geometry system,” allowing developers to build worlds with meticulous geometric detail. Kurt Cobain died 28 years ago yesterday, but his life — and death — continue to inspire countless works of art. The latest addition to the Cobain canon is an opera adapted from Gus Van Sant’s dramatized film about his final days. London’s Royal Opera House is adapting Van Sant’s 2005 film, Last Days, into an opera for its 2022-2023 season (via The Guardian). The opera was composed by Oliver Leith, the ROH’s composer-in-residence, with the libretto by Matt Copson. Anna Morrissey and Copson are set to direct the opera, due to be staged in October. The opera, also titled Last Days, “plunges into the torment that created a modern myth,” the Royal Opera House said. The story follows the musician Blake, Cobain’s stand-in, as he returns home from a stint in rehab. “But he is haunted by objec...
Following the tragic death of drummer Taylor Hawkins, Foo Fighters canceled all of their scheduled 2022 tour dates. One of those dates was a headlining gig at the upcoming Welcome to Rockville festival in Daytona Beach, Florida. Today (April 6th), organizers announced that Nine Inch Nails will replace Foo Fighters on the Sunday (May 22nd) lineup of the four-day fest. It’s the second such announcement of the day, as Boston Calling revealed this morning that NIN would be filling in for Foo Fighters on the first night (May 27th) of its three-day lineup. The addition of Nine Inch Nails creates a triumvirate of early ’90s alt-rock legends at the top of Welcome to Rockville’s Sunday bill, with The Smashing Pumpkins and Jane’s Addiction playing right before NIN. Post Animal are back with another look at their upcoming album Love Gibberish. This time, they’ve shared the hair metal throwback “No More Sports.” Listen to the single below. Post Animal have never been shy about their classic rock influences, but “No More Sports” takes the ’80s theatrics to a whole new level with choppy guitar, spacey synthesizers, and lyrics like “Going 95 down the highway of burning desire.” Even better, the single comes with a kaleidoscopic, partially animated music video that looks like it was ripped directly from a Guitar Hero performance. The Chicago psych rockers explained the origins of “No More Sports” in a statement, calling it “an ode to early arena rock of the ’80s with a twist of ego death. All the bravado of a hair metal song with lyrics that examine s...
Less than two weeks ahead of Coachella, the festival has confirmed that Swedish House Mafia and The Weeknd will headline in lieu of Ye, formerly known as Kanye West. The “Moth To A Flame” collaborators will perform in the festival-closing slot on Sunday night of each weekend, April 15-17 and April 22-24. It’s worth noting that the day’s three top-billed acts—Swedish House Mafia, The Weeknd and Doja Cat—are all managed by Wassim “Sal” Slaiby’s SalXCo firm. Axwell, Sebastian Ingrosso and Steve Angello of Swedish House Mafia are on the verge of releasing their long-awaited debut album, Paradise Again, on April 15th. The supergroup also recently contributed production to two songs from The Weeknd’s chart-topping 5th studio album, Dawn FM. Swedish...
Coming off his biggest year yet that includes a phenomenal collaboration with ILLENIUM and Valerie Broussard, Nurko has unveiled his Arrival EP. Though fans have already been introduced to three of the five tracks featured, hearing them in Nurko’s chosen order helps define the tone of the EP. The slow-burning intro helps paint a vivid soundscape, directly leading into “Disappearing Now” (with Chander Leighton). Her ethereal vocals guide listeners through a familiar path, as she croons about struggling to clearly define one’s identity. The following tune, “Lost Without You” (with Crystal Skies and KnownAsNat), continues the moving presence found early on in the EP. KnownAsNat conveys heartbreak through her lyrics while the abundance of soaring synths...
