A Day in the Life of… S-X

Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter/producer S-X has made his name collaborating with such heavy-hitters as Lil Wayne, Childish Gambino, Chance the Rapper and J. Cole. This year, the 29-year-old’s long-awaited, soon-to-be-released debut album Who We Are showcases the artist’s signature lyrical prowess paired with a unique pop-R&B sound. “I’d say it’s relaxing, chill and honest,” the artist says. “But also energetic at times. I’ve never been able to describe my sound — it’s just S-X music.” The so-called Wolverhampton Wonderkid took a step back from the industry in 2015 to slow down, start a family, and think about his next move. “I got to know myself more,” he says. “I was experiencing things with my mental health and I really had to just stop music for a while. I got a normal job....

106 Musicians Predict the 2022 Baseball Season

The powers-that-be did their best to prevent this year’s Major League Baseball season from happening, but, alas, we’re back. By we, I mean the annual SPIN baseball preview. As usual, everyone (or almost everyone) is optimistic about their team’s chances in 2022. In 2021, a good chunk of the season was played with minimal fans in attendance, but things should be mostly back to normal this year. As I said last year about the season: Will it be weird? Probably. But aren’t they all? If it wasn’t a weird season with bizarre injuries, what kind of season would it be? Not baseball, Suzyn. Somehow, we almost doubled the number of participants from 62 to 105. Maybe we go for a cool 162 next year? If nothing else, we know that musicians love America’s Pastime (even if many feel that it doesn’t love ...

Her regular touring band recorded with her, including Jorge Balbi on drums, Devon Hoff on bass, and musical director Charley Damski on synthesizers and guitars. Yet unlike her prior releases, Van Etten will not release singles leading up to the album’s release date. “I wanted to approach this release differently,” Van Etten says, “to engage my fans in an intentional way, in an effort to present the album as a whole body of work. These ten songs are designed to be listened to in order, at once, so that a m...

Barbarism is due out June 24 via FourFour. The LP follows Greer’s three solo EPs: Freaky 57, 3 Colors, and No One Else on Earth. Of the new single, Greer said in a statement: I’d spent something like 70 days mostly alone since the pandemic started. Then one weekend I biked out to Fairfax Avenue and found myself amongst thousands of people. It was jarring…. To go from mostly the stillness of a barely-lived-in bedroom to projectile shopping carts, strangers chanting, phalanxes of beige gun toters, and tanks parallel park...

Alice in Chains’ 10 Best Songs

As one of the “Big Four” bands of Seattle grunge, Alice in Chains’ distinctive specialties (such as sludgy instrumentation and vocal harmonies) set them apart. In fact, they created some of the most meaningful and enduring rock music of the last 30-plus years, so it’s no wonder why they remain so revered. Fascinatingly, the group formed after the disbandment of Alice N’ Chains, a glam metal band fronted by vocalist Layne Staley whose moniker was a mischievous mixture of Alice in Wonderland and female bondage. Luckily, Staley didn’t have to wait long before fate would put him, guitarist Jerry Cantrell, drummer Sean Kinney, and bassist Mike Starr together. Although they initially played around with other names (including Diamond Lie and F**k), they soon settled on the marginally altered “Ali...
