Martin Garrix‘s return to touring has sparked inspiration for one of the artist’s biggest efforts yet, his debut club album, Sentio. Over the last two years, Garrix has released numerous massive pop collaborations alongside some of music’s biggest names including Bono & The Edge of U2, G-Eazy, and more. Garrix and Maejor additionally dropped the dynamic debut album under their AREA21 alias, Greatest Hits Vol. 1, late last year. During that time, Garrix was simultaneously taking a break from producing new club hits, especially as events were on hold with the onset of the pandemic. “The crazy thing is I’ve never released a Garrix album. During COVID I made zero club music because it felt weird to make festival music when the...
Words by Clayton Durant and Alex Jeffrey. Music distribution is nothing new. Even since the earliest days of music, distribution has been a critical component for driving the recorded and publishing business. However, the function of the music distributor has changed over the past few years as technology, consolidation, and the emergence of new, well financed companies has forced many to ask: “What is the role of the music distributor in 2022?” Today’s music business has found the convergence of independent artists and distribution to be one of the most important areas of growth. According to MiDIA, independent labels and artists increased their combined streaming market share to 31.5% in 2021. This growth comes alongside RIAA’s annual year-end data, which noted that the record...
Spotify is rolling out a new Featured Curators pilot, which will test a new feature that allows listeners to discover music through a collection of playlists created by selected Spotify users and influencers, the company announced on Monday. The audio-streaming giant disclosed that the curators it has selected for the new feature include “music lovers with established followings and popular playlists” as well as users that are “telling unique stories through playlists and creating authentic connections with other users.” “Our goal is always to make Spotify the number one destination for the best listening experience, and with this pilot, we’re giving listeners a new way to discover music from fellow fans who are as engaged as they are,” the company wrote in a blog post about the new test. ...
Kanye West has pulled out of Coachella, TMZ, Variety, and Billboard report. His representatives have not yet supplied a reason for his withdrawal, nor has the festival commented. West was due to headline the festival on Sunday April 17 and 24. While the reasons remain unclear, West suggested in February that he would cancel his set if fellow headliner Billie Eilish did not apologize to Travis Scott. West believed that Eilish had insulted Scott—whom West intended to bring out at Coachella—when she paused a show to help a fan, not long after the Astroworld tragedy. Eilish said she “literally never said a thing about travis” and “was just helping a fan.” Pitchfork has emailed representatives for West and Coachella. In addition to Friday night headliner Harry Styles, Variety notes that the ori...
FKA twigs has been cast as in a forthcoming cinematic reboot of The Crow, according to Entertainment Weekly. She’ll star alongside Bill Skarsgård in the update, a “modern reimagining” of James O’Barr’s comic book series, with a script by Zach Baylin (King Richard) and directed by Rupert Sanders (Snow White and the Huntsman). Since the 1994 screen adaptation of The Crow—which was notable for the accidental on-set death of star Brandon Lee—multiple attempts have been made at rebooting it. Jason Momoa, Mark Wahlberg, Bradley Cooper, and director Corin Hardy have all been attached to the project at different points since 2010. FKA twigs’ most recent acting credit was in the 2019’s Honey Boy, and this year she issued the new Caprisongs mixtape.
Riderless Horse is my first solo record, and it’s the first record my former partner, Kennan Gudjonsson, didn’t produce. I haven’t made an album since 2010. I decided to stop pursuing music several years after my sixth record, Outlaster, because of unhappiness, overwhelming chaos, mental illness, and my tragically dysfunctional relationship with Kennan. Creating music had always been a positive outlet during difficult times, but eventually it became a source of absolute misery. Kennan, a cat, and I lived in a studio apartment in NYC for 25 years, finding ways to survive while making records and going on tours. Our apartment was the place where people would come stay, eat, drink, play music, and use our tub. It was quite a home we had created, but it was decaying steadily from the moment we...
