Before his voice fills stadiums during AFI‘s upcoming “Bodies” tour, Davey Havok is speaking out about the cruel forced swim test in a new PETA campaign video released on World Rat Day (April 4). With a rat named Wee Man perched on his shoulder, the singer explains how small animals are dropped into inescapable beakers of water where they swim desperately, trying not to drown in the “behavioral despair test” — which pharmaceutical companies like Eli Lilly have used to screen antidepressant drugs. “Is that depression that you’re measuring?” the musician asks in the video. “No. It’s fear. It’s trauma. It’s fight or flight. … Nothing is gained from that except their suffering. And no animals deserve that. No animals deser...
Britney Spears gave her loyal fans an update on the process of writing her upcoming memoir on Monday (April 4). In a lengthy Instagram post, the pop star wrote, “Well I’m writing a book at the moment and as it’s actually healing and therapeutic … it’s also hard bringing up past events in my life … I’ve never been able to express openly !!! I can only imagine that I do sound childish but I was extremely young when those events took place … and addressing it now … I’m sure it seems irrelevant to most and I’m completely aware of that !!!” Spears then referenced Justin Timberlake‘s public apology to both herself and Janet Jackson in the wake of The New York Times Presents: Framing Britney Spears premiering on Hulu in 2021, and ahead of the release of The New York Times Presents: Malfuncti...

For all the recent controversy surrounding the Grammy Awards, this year the Recording Academy managed to spotlight a significant creator with an urgent message for the American public. And did anyone say anything more urgent than Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy? Not for lack of trying. “We’re here because music serves the world,” said Recording Academy CEO Harvey Mason Jr. in a pre-taped message, “and at the new Recording Academy” – the “new” emphasized with one of those thumb-points politicians do – “we serve music.” For the last half-decade, as the rise of streaming drove lighter, more pop-friendly sounds to the top of the charts, music fans have been griping about the menu the academy has been offering. They have boldly made the case that the Grammys often recognize yesterday’s ...

Netflix isn’t big on fan service these days (A $16 standard plan? Charging a fee for sharing passwords?), but thanks to Pete Davidson, the streamer has done one thing right. After the comedian took to Saturday Night Live to bemoan the epic-length movies dominating the industry today, Netflix made Davidson’s dreams of a “Short-Ass Movies” section a reality. “These days, when I sit down to watch a movie, I can find just about anything in the world,” Davidson says to open his musical sketch. “But night after night, there’s only one kind of movie I’m always looking for, and that’s a short ass movie.” The comedian then goes into a rap with Chris Redd about how his short attention span requires a film that’s “like, at most, an hour-forty,” and even starts listing examples. Naturally, musica...
For decades now, David Duchovny hasn’t been afraid to poke a little fun at his own image. The veteran TV star has peppered his career with roles in which he satirizes the nature of being “David Duchovny,” most recently seen in the first season of the Netlfix series The Chair, in which he satirized himself with aching attention to details like his recent literary and musical efforts. But as he tells Consequence, taking on the role of “David Duchovny” was a very different experience from his role in The Bubble, the new Netflix comedy directed and co-written by Judd Apatow. The Bubble tracks a pandemic-era cast and crew assembling to film the latest installment of a fictional blockbuster franchise called Cliff Beasts 6, with Duchovny playing Dustin Mulray, one of the film’s stars, whose compl...
In 2014, Atina Brown and John Swilley met at a recording session. Swilley was already in a band while Brown was a curious spectator who initiated the symposium. They recorded a song together that night and, as they say, the rest was history. Today, they’re the two parts that make up the Atlanta-based band Mattiel (which is also Atina’s middle name). Brown is on vocals while Swilley mans drums, guitar, and much of the other production elements. Before their most recent album, Georgia Gothic (released on March 18 of this year), the duo put out two records (Mattiel [2017] and Satis Factory [2019]), both remotely composed with Brown and Swilley in entirely separate locations. Georgia Gothic, however, was done a little differently as the twosome confined themselves to a secluded cabin in Georgi...
