Hans Zimmer won the award for Best Original Score at the 2022 Oscars tonight. His work on Denis Villeneuve’s Dune remake beat out scores by Jonny Greenwood (The Power of the Dog), Nicholas Britell (Don’t Look Up), Germaine Franco (Encanto), and Alberto Iglesias (Parallel Mothers). Zimmer couldn’t attend the Academy Awards ceremony this year due to a performance scheduled for that same night. After learning he won an Oscar for Best Original Score, he tweeted a photo of himself in a hotel bathrobe holding the award, saying, “It’s 2am in Amsterdam, and my daughter Zoë woke me up to go to the hotel bar. She performed her King Richard song “Be Alive.” True to the subject of the film, the performance took place at the Compton tennis courts where Venus and Serena Williams ran drills as children. The performance was introduced by Venus and Serena and featured an appearance from Beyoncé’s daughter Blue Ivy. Mira Calix, the UK-based sound artist and experimental musician signed to Warp, has died, the label announced. “Mira was not only a hugely talented artist and composer, she was also a beautiful, caring human who touched the lives of everyone who had the honour of working with her,” the label posted in a note on social media. “She pushed the boundaries between electronic music, classical music and art in a truly unique way.” Born Chantal Francesca Passamonte in South Africa in 1970, Calix arrived in London in 1991 to pursue a career in music. She worked as a promoter and DJ while doing publicity for Warp, before becoming one of the first women to sign with the label as an artist. She will address students and guests at the school’s commencement ceremony on May 18 at Yankee Stadium. Being NYU’s first commencement since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, the ceremony will honor the 2020, 2021, and 2022 classes. NYU’s Clive Davis Institute recently completed its first-ever class on Swift, taught by Rolling Stone staff writer Brittany Spanos (who has also contributed to Pitchfork). Swift recently previewed a new Aaron Dessner-produced track called “Carolina” in the trailer for Where the Crawdads Sing, a film based on Delia Owens’ 2018 novel of the same name.
