RATING: 7.5/10 As frontman with Swedish hard rock legends PRETTY MAIDS, Ronnie Atkins is already a legend several times over, but none of his past achievements come close to the marvel of his ongoing solo career, launched in the wake of an incurable cancer diagnosis. “Make It Count” loudly proclaims that Atkins is very much still with us and, as was evident on 2020’s “One Shot”, on exceptional form as both a singer and songwriter. Frankly, the man is a fucking hero. The formula remains the same: huge, euphoric melodic rock anthems, tinged with a certain wistfulness but both lyrically and musically defiant. Opener “I’ve Hurt Myself (By Hurting You)” pulls out all the stops, hitting the AOR bullseye with ease, but also showcasing a warm and org...
Heavy progressive/fusion band OHM has signed with M-Theory Audio. The power trio — whose lineup in 2022 consists of guitarist Chris Poland (ex-MEGADETH), bassist Robertino “Pag” Pagliari (Uli Jon Roth, Frank Gambale) and new drummer Carlos Cruz (WARBRINGER, MACHINE HEAD, POWER TRIP) — will enter the studio this summer to record its as-yet-untitled new album. In the meantime, the band have unveiled a visualizer video for “Exit Stage Left”, their first new studio recording since 2012. Says Poland: “OHM is ecstatic to announce our signing with M-Theory Audio! It’s been a very long time since the release of our last album and with the passing of our previous drummers, David Eagle and Nick Menza, I’m truly grateful to share our new sound alongside bassi...
By Larisha Paul An eponymous album marks a major moment in an artist’s career. For women, owning one’s work, body, and artistry can be especially powerful, even political. Throughout Women’s History Month, MTV News is highlighting some of these iconic statements from some of the biggest artists on the globe. This is Self-Titled. The cards were stacked against Fifth Harmony from the beginning. From the time that Normani, Lauren Jauregui, Ally Brooke, Dinah Jane, and Camila Cabello were wrangled into a girl group by Simon Cowell like a gender-swapped One Direction after auditioning as soloists on The X Factor in 2012, any intention of each member establishing distinct identities as performers had been thwarted. Even if only momentarily, the presence of Fifth Harmony as key ...
While reviews seem to point towards the Steam Deck not fully optimized to run current, modern games, it does however look pretty mighty when it comes to emulating older consoles. Over on YouTube, gaming channel ETA Prime just published a video showcasing the myriad of emulation capabilities the new handheld device possesses. In the 10-minute clip, he runs through emulators for a whole range of consoles on the Steam Deck, playing games from the popular PlayStation 1, 2 and 3 and the original Xbox as well as other older devices, including the Sega Saturn and Dreamcast. It’ll also run emulators for Nintendo consoles, such as the GameCube and Wii U. As you’ll see, all the games run pretty well on the platform, so even if you’re struggling to find a well-optimized title from the current Steam l...
“The first time I knew I wanted a life in music I was eight years old and discovered a Stevie Wonder cassette tape with ‘I Called to Say I Love You’ on one side,” recalls two-time Grammy-nominated singer, songwriter, producer and entrepreneur Poo Bear. “I would sneak off and listen to it whenever I could, and that made me want a life in music.” And what a life in music he’s had, including working with such superstars as Justin Bieber and Usher, amassing a catalog with over 350 million record sales worldwide, dozens of multi-platinum certifications, and 100 billion streams. Poo Bear’s new album The Book of Nabeel (out in April) promises to powerfully blend the veteran hit maker’s world music and pop influences. He notes that the writing process for the vibrant dance single “Distant Sho...
Lil Durk on Tuesday evening performed a medley of two 7220 tracks with Future on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. Durk began with a rendition of “Petty Too” alongside Future, whose entrance was well-received with rounds of applause, before Durk gave a fiery performance of “AHHH HA.” The performance marked Lil Durk’s first headlining performance as a musical guest on the late-night talk show, though he did make a guest appearance during Pooh Shiesty’s “Back In Blood” performance on the show in April of last year. Last month, Durk performed “Lost Kings” alongside 2 Chainz on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, off the Atlanta rapper’s latest effort, Dope Don’t Sell Itself. Lil Durk’s seventh studio album, 7220, which was released last Friday, is projected to earn t...
Book Club is a new monthly series exploring the literature that inspires some of our favorite musicians. Whether it’s a music biography that got them through the slog of tour, the poetry collection that eked into their most poignant lyrics, or the novel that sparked a rock opera, we’ll get to the bottom of it so you can add it to the top of your book stack. The first edition features Jenny Hval. Jenny Hval has scattered allusions to her vast literary influences across three novels and eight wide-ranging solo albums—including this month’s Classic Objects, the experimental artist’s poppiest outing and first record for 4AD. But after adopting a Finnish Lapphund named Soba, she found her reading attention turned to dog behavioral guides. “She’s a very high-pitched, loud, dramatic dog—very...
When people talk about skateboarding video games, there’s generally one name that they mention — and that name isn’t OlliOlli World. But truthfully, OlliOlli World puts a wildly different spin roughly based on the genre that Tony Hawk popularized. Part skateboarding romp and part action-platformer, the latest from British developer Roll7 takes players through a whole new adventure through the OlliOlli universe that began with 2014’s game of the same name. Compared to the previous two titles, OlliOlli World ditches the quaint pixel art for a massively expanded world, character creation, top-notch electronic soundtrack and adorable new art style that shows off the colorful setting of Radlandia the team has built. But while it may look family friendly, the 100ish levels of skateboard platform...
Father John Misty recently released his newest single “Goodbye Mr. Blue” from his new album Chloë and the Next 20th Century. The single reveals Josh Tillman in a state of intimacy: a stripped-down, country-folk tune exuding warmth from fingerpicked guitar riffs and Harry Nilsson-inspired lyrics. Tillman was also inspired by hearty singer-songwriters such as Jim Croce and John Denver. The accompanying video paints, according to a release, “an elliptical portrait of a family reunion filmed on location in Sofia, Bulgaria.” Directed by Noel Paul, the bittersweet pastel images of family and returning home offer a comforting backdrop for Tillman’s recent single. The story follows a young woman’s journey to her family home as she travels to Sofia. [embedded content][embedded content] Father John ...
