When it comes to Josh Klinghoffer’s musical output, it helps to have Google and Wikipedia handy to keep track of his voluminous work on dozens of projects by everyone from PJ Harvey and Gnarls Barkley to his own bands Dot Hacker and Pluralone. Of course, the 42-year-old Los Angeles native is best known for his 10-year stint playing guitar in the Red Hot Chili Peppers, which ended in 2019. Since then, he joined Pearl Jam as a touring member and wrote and recorded with Eddie Vedder on his latest solo album, Earthling. And in tandem with Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith and producer/guitarist Andrew Watt, Klinghoffer just wrapped a short U.S. tour with Vedder in support of the project, during which he was forced to miss a Chicago show after contracting COVID-19 on the road. Klinghoffer had pl...
Back in 2016, when this column had a different name in a different publication, I stumbled upon Italian doom band Messa and their debut full-length, Belfry. It lit in me a particular fire — a fire signaling that this band could really cross over. While Belfry could go into dimly lit drones and dark jazz excursions, the band never lost sight of doom fundamentals — crushing riffs that leant to a suffocating yet enticing atmosphere, and a captivating vocal performance from Sara Bianchin, who strikes that sweet spot of virtuosity and bluesy warmth. When it hits, it hits. Familiar yet enticing, Messa definitely had everything in line for a wider audience. They recently released Close through Finnish indie label Svart, and they’ve cut through the fog in more ways than one — not only do they soun...
Three decades ago, The Boo Radleys made a psychedelic masterpiece that was hailed by NME as one of the top albums of 1993. Their next album spawned a sunny Britpop hit and rose to No. 1 on the U.K. album charts, and the next one was rumored to have influenced Radiohead. So why is the band so overlooked today? “I think we just confused people,” says lead singer Simon “Sice” Rowbottom on the eve of the band’s first album in 23 years. Sice observes that the Boos’ willingness to transcend genre—originating as a My Bloody Valentine-inspired shoegaze outfit; melding roaring guitar with eclectic instrumentation and avant-noise psychedelia on 1993’s extraordinarily potent Giant Steps; then being labeled a Britpop act with 1995’s Wake Up!—left critics and fans unsure how to categorize the group. In...
Thom Yorke has shared a new solo song called “5.17.” Apple Music lists a second Yorke single titled “That’s How Horses Are” as coming out on April 2. Both songs were written for the British drama series Peaky Blinders. Check out “5.17” below. Last month, Peaky Blinders director Anthony Byrne revealed that Yorke and Jonny Greenwood contributed original music for the sixth and final season of the TV show. “I’m over the moon about all of that,” Byrne told NME. “The music has always been really important historically, and I was really keen to bring a dramatic score into it.” Yorke released his most recent solo album, Anima, in 2019 and his debut film score for Luca Guadagnino’s Suspiria remake in 2018. In recent months, he’s stayed busy with his BBC Radio 6 music mix, remixing MF Doom’s “Gazzi...
