A New York court has ruled that the state’s updated anti-SLAPP laws do not apply to the defamation lawsuit filed against Kesha by Lukasz “Dr. Luke” Gottwald, reversing a decision made by New York Supreme Court Justice Jennifer Schecter last June. The First Judicial Department of the Appellate Division of the New York Supreme Court made the decision on Thursday (March 10), as Billboard reports and Pitchfork can confirm. “The fact that the amended statute is remedial, and that the legislature provided that the amendments shall take effect immediately, does not support the conclusion that the legislature intended retroactive application of the amendments,” wrote the court in their decision. Pitchfork has contacted representatives for both Kesha and Dr. Luke for comment. Last year, Judge...

The Ledger is a weekly newsletter about the economics of the music business sent to Billboard Pro subscribers. An abbreviated version of the newsletter is published online. Strong steps taken by Western music companies to cease operations in Russia will have a big impact on the country but will do little damage to the global market. Russia is the 16th largest recorded music market in the world with a trade value $199 million in 2020, according to the IFPI. That was on par with Sweden, which has about 7% of Russia’s population, as well as Mexico, India and Switzerland. For the largest record labels, music publishers and music streaming companies, each with multi-billion-dollar revenues, Russia is a tiny part of their worldwide businesses. In a new interview with Andy Hall of the Des Moines, Iowa radio station Lazer 103.3, punk rock icon Henry Rollins once again discussed his decision to stop making music 15 years ago after spending well over a decade recording and touring with ROLLINS BAND, his alt-rock powerhouse. He said (as transcribed by BLABBERMOUTH.NET): “I had no more lyrics. I no longer thought in lyrical form. If you made me sit down and write a song, I’d have to write it like someone who just likes listening to the radio or make something rhyme. ‘Love — dove…’ Hmmm. A chorus? Oh. No. Call Paul McCartney, ’cause I’m not him. And so one day, it was just over. “I’m not a musician. I can’t play an instrument,” he continued. “I can pick them up and carry...
