Netflix has tapped Shonda Rhimes and her longtime Shondaland partner Betsy Beers to executive produce an upcoming White House murder-mystery series, titled The Residence. The eight-episode drama, which has been ordered straight to series, is largely inspired by Kate Anderson Brower’s nonfiction book, The Residence: Inside the Private World of the White House, which explores the realities of America’s first families from the point of view of their staffers. Paul William Davies, a Shondaland veteran who previously worked on the hit ABC series Scandal and legal drama For the People, will serve as showrunner and executive producer on the series. “132 rooms. 157 suspects. One dead body. One wildly eccentric detective. One disastrous State Dinner,” the official synopsis reads. “The Residenc...
Zoë Kravitz, who is currently receiving widely positive reviews for her portrayal of Selina Kyle, or Catwoman, in Matt Reeves‘ The Batman, recently spoke out about being called too “urban” to audition for a role in Christopher Nolan’s 2012 film The Dark Knight Rises. “I don’t know if it came directly from Chris Nolan,” the actress said in an interview with The Guardian. “I think it was probably a casting director of some kind, or a casting director’s assistant.” Kravitz, who is of Black and Jewish descent, continued, “Being a woman of color and being an actor and being told at that time that I wasn’t able to read because of the color of my skin, and the word ‘urban’ being thrown around like that, that was what was really hard about that moment.” It is unkown which ...

Legendary guitarist Pat Travers and his band have just released a blazing new single, “Push Yourself”. Built around Travers‘s trademark Fender Strat, the track crackles with intensity and bravado. The guitar playing is matched in grittiness and power by Travers‘s own vocals, which ring out like a wakeup call to anyone thinking that this veteran blues rocker will be resting on his laurels. As Travers himself puts it: “‘Push Yourself’ is a mantra I use when I need to get my ass in gear and get stuff done. Pretty simple.” The “Push Yourself” music video, which was assembled using recent live footage of Travers tearing up the stage intercut with scenes from the recent LYNYRD SKYNYRD dramatization “Street Survivors: The True Stor...

Occasional author and constant bigot J.K. Rowling has been tweeting for days about how Scotland’s Gender Recognition Reform Bill, which merely reduces the red tape around obtaining a Gender Recognition Certificate, will somehow lead to more sexual assaults. A Gender Recognition Certificate “means a trans person is legally recognized in their acquired gender and can obtain a new birth certificate showing that gender.” First Minister Nicola Sturgeon helped introduce the reform bill to Scotland’s parliament last week. It takes what is currently a horrifyingly invasive process — requiring applicants to receive a diagnosis of gender dysphoria, provide “medical reports and evidence,” plod through a two-year wait, and be over 18 — and changes the process to be merely arduous. If the bill pas...
As has been said many times before, King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard are coming out with a new album. The Australian rockers are gearing up to share Omnium Gatherum, their first double LP and — if we have our math right here — their 20th album overall. As a preview, King Gizzard have shared the whopping 18-minute single “The Dripping Tap.” After releasing three albums during lockdown that were written and recorded entirely remotely, Omnium Gatherum marks some of the first music K.G. were able to record in the same space post-pandemic. The result is some of the most ambitious music they’ve ever put to tape: “We decided, this is like our classic sprawling ‘double album,’” frontman Stu Mackenzie said in a statement. “Our White Album, where anything goes.” “The Dripping ...
Six years after winning the Nobel Prize for Literature, Bob Dylan has announced his first book of new writing in nearly two decades, The Philosophy of Modern Song, set to be published by Simon & Schuster on November 8th, 2022. Dylan began writing the collection of over 60 essays in 2010. Described in a press release as “a master class on the art and craft of songwriting,” the book will see Dylan break down songs by artists like Stephen Foster, Elvis Costello, Nina Simone, and Hank Williams. The singer-songwriter’s analysis includes “what he calls the trap of easy rhymes, breaks down how the addition of a single syllable can diminish a song, and even explains how bluegrass relates to heavy metal.” The Philosophy of Modern Song also contains 150 photos curated by Dylan, as well as a seri...
