By Max Freedman At the start of the pandemic, Kaina Castillo felt just like the rest of us: isolated, uninspired, a bit down. For the 26-year-old Chicago-based musician, who records as Kaina (styled in all caps), that meant going through 2020 without working on music — not even with the tailwind of her breakout 2019 debut album Next to the Sun propelling her forward. “It was really difficult to ask myself to create anything,” she tells MTV News. “We’ve never experienced a time like this, and I think it’s completely fair to say that all you want to do is just lay in bed and be numb.” In early 2021, Castillo reckoned with how unmoored she felt from her music in 2020 and decided to do something about it. “I was like, ‘I haven’t written a song, and I’m losing that muscle,’” s...
It may sound hyperbolic, but without Jack Irons, the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Pearl Jam may never have come to exist. The 59-year-old drummer was key to the formation of both of those Rock and Roll Hall of Fame-inducted bands, thanks to lifelong friendships with musicians such as Flea, Anthony Kiedis and Alain Johannes, and to his chance handoff of a 1990 instrumental, pre-Pearl Jam demo tape to a then-unknown San Diego singer named Eddie Vedder, who was afterward invited to join that band within a matter of weeks. In recent years, Irons has released a host of largely instrumental music on his own, boiling down the essence of his rhythmic prowess into tracks that at times recall the spookier side of trip-hop, the precision cool of Kraftwerk and the spaced-out syncopation of Can. On March ...
A few weeks after releasing their first proper new track in years (they did record a song for Cruella last year), Florence + The Machine are back with yet another new one in “Heaven Is Here.” [embedded content][embedded content] The previously unveiled “King,” was the group’s first since 2018 and was produced by Grammy-award-winning producer Jack Antonoff. The videos for both new tracks were directed by Autumn de Wilde. Here’s what Welch wrote on her Instagram about “Heaven Is Here”: “‘Heaven is Here’ was the first song I wrote in lockdown after an extended period of not being able to get to the studio. I wanted to make something monstrous. And this clamour of joy, fury and grief was the first thing that came out. “With dance studios also shut it was my dream to one day create choreog...

Superorganism recruited a number of heavy-hitting collaborators for the 13-track record, including Stephen Malkmus, Chai, Pi Ja Ma, Dylan Cartlidge, and Gen Hoshino. “Teenager” celebrates the raw passion of those formative years, and the band tapped former tour mates Chai and Pi Ja Ma for support on the track. Netflix and TikTok suspended most of their services in Russia on Sunday (March 6) as the government cracks down on what people and media outlets can say about Russia’s war in Ukraine. TikTok said Russian users of the popular social media app would no longer be able to post new videos or livestreams and they also wouldn’t be able to see videos shared from elsewhere in the world. Netflix said it was suspending its service in Russia but didn’t provide additional details. The actions are likely to further isolate the country and its people after a growing number of multinational businesses have cut off Russia from vital financial services and technology products in response to Western economic sanctions and global outrage over the invasion of Ukraine.
