An experimental vanguard of the genre, Rihanna was worlds away from the Bajan, honey-tressed sweetheart introduced to fans on her 2005 Caribbean-tinged debut album, Music of the Sun. At each of her musical eras, Rihanna defied expectations of what audiences presumed a Black female singer to be, eschewing “urban” marketing for crossover fanfare. Meeting he...

Take Me Home Found One Direction Rewriting The Boy-Band Script

Welcome to New Retro Week, a celebration of the biggest artists, hits, and cultural moments that made 2012 a seminal year in pop. MTV News is looking back to see what lies ahead: These essays showcase how today’s blueprint was laid a decade ago. Step into our time machine. By Larisha Paul There was no blueprint for One Direction. Before their formation in 2010, the landscape of competing boy bands whose mere name evoked thousands of screaming fans was barren. Predecessors like Backstreet Boys and NSYNC were either past their peak or already broken up — and none of them had been unexpectedly thrown together on a singing competition show. During their stint on The X Factor (U.K.), Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson, and Liam Payne were tasked with performing covers week a...

Bloom 5: Music Is Better Together (Part 1)

Why care? It sounds harsh, but it is valid to ask. Why ought we care about the wellbeing of others outside of ourselves? During the past couple of years, navigating and learning your world as it was in lockdown, there was little brain space to consider how a public health crisis impacted other age groups. That wasn’t selfish; it’s hyper self-awareness in a trying time to keep yourself healthy. To adapt to that phrase of a “new normal.” As the word pandemic begins to be replaced with endemic, we ought to look around to check in on our neighbors in a meaningful way. I’d like to focus on one group in particular: college youth. There is a mental health crisis among college students today in the United States. There is a crisis occurring within a body of over 19 million people in our nation. Fo...

O.N.E. The Duo Carve Their Own Path From Wu-Tang Roots to Country Music

O.N.E. The Duo could’ve taken the easy way into the music biz. The mother-daughter duo of Tekitha Washington and Prana Supreme Diggs was already hip-hop royalty — as in Prana’s father is RZA, while Washington (known professionally by only her first name) can be heard on a number of Wu-Tang Clan group and solo tracks across her 25-year career — and likely would’ve coasted into a secure space within the rap or R&B worlds pretty easily. Instead, O.N.E. (which stands for “Observant, Noetic, and Effervescent”) decided to delve into arguably the most difficult corner of the music realm they could enter: country. As the only Black mother-daughter combination in country — a genre which has often been challenging for women and minorities alike — the Nashville-based duo is carving their own way ...
