ODESZA have dropped the latest crumb of the trail to a 2022 tour, a cinematic music video for their new single “The Last Goodbye.” ODESZA’s Clayton Knight and Harrison Mills perform the soulful track in the video, galvanizing fans and fueling speculation of a new tour, which has not yet been confirmed but is likely to be announced soon. The same goes for a new album, if today’s premiere is any indication. Livestreaming the video on YouTube, ODESZA built the hype in slow and painstaking fashion leading up to its premiere, intercutting snippets of ambient music with clips of the duo working in the studio. While they are yet to formally announce a new album—their first since 2017’s A Moment Apart—their activity in early 2021 has the feel of a smoke signal. Filmed...
Joe Rogan’s podcasting deal with Spotify was worth at least double previously believed, according to a report from The New York Times. On Thursday, The Times reported the streaming services’ exclusive arrangement with The Joe Rogan Experience was priced at “at least $200 million” for three and a half years, according to two anonymous sources — far exceeding the originally reported deal sum of more than $100 million. This puts the former Fear Factor host and comedian’s deal in the same ballpark as Spotify’s acquisition of entire audio studios — like Gimlet and Ringer — for slightly less than $200 million. The spending was all part of the company’s plan to become a premier destination for all audio content, not just music. Music, for the streaming service, has not proven to not incredib...

Listening to Segarra’s stories, connections come alive, honoring another tenet of Emergent Strategy: “Transform yourself to transform the world.” Accordingly, Segarra threads Life on Earth with songs of self-reckoning, where electronics quake like new life about to spring. “Trying to avoid running into my ex on Broadway,” they sing on the brooding, skyscraping “Pierced Arrows,” knowing it takes work to not look back. On the lonesome “Nightqueen,” they sing of betraying their own heart in favor of an “addiction to freedom,” which proves futile. When they insist, over the slinking beat of “Jupiter’s Dance,” that they “can’t start a fire without my heart”—the restless spirit of Springsteen never too far off—it seems to say: access to one’s own emotions is the ultimate spark. Life on Earth’s f...
