You don’t become one of the world’s most esteemed living filmmakers without making a few enemies. In a new interview with GQ, Francis Ford Coppola didn’t shy away from calling out his pet peeves in modern cinema, revealing that he generally finds Marvel movies formulaic and repetitive. “There used to be studio films,” the Godfather mastermind said. “Now there are Marvel pictures. And what is a Marvel picture? A Marvel picture is one prototype movie that is made over and over and over and over and over again to look different.” Even some non-Marvel blockbusters, particularly Dune and No Time to Die, haven’t pleased Coppola, either (ironically, Dune director Denis Villeneuve has also voiced his frustrations with the science of Marvel). Dave has been renewed for a third season by FX Networks. The series centers around the eponymous Dave Burd as an exaggerated version of his rap alter ego Lil Dicky while he attempts to fulfill his destiny as the next great legend in the pantheon of hip-hop… if only he could actually get around to making his debut album. Produced in part by Scooter Braun, the show also stars Davionte “GaTa” Ganter (a.k.a. Lil Dicky’s real-life hype man) as well as Taylor Misiak, Andrew Santino, Travis “Taco” Bennett of Odd Future, and Christine Ko with Benny Blanco, Gina Hecht, and David Paymer in recurring roles. Dave has become one of the hottest places on TV to find an A-list cameo, and featured everyone from Kendall Jenner and Hailey Bieber to Doja Cat, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and Lil Nas X in its star-stu...
Ava DuVernay’s production company Array has cut ties with Spotify, The New York Times reports. The decision comes just a year after Array signed an exclusive, multiyear deal with Spotify to produce podcasts. No projects were released, but several scripted and unscripted series had been in development. Neither DuVernay nor Array has given a reason for the split, and Spotify has not offered comment. But the A Wrinkle in Time director joins a growing list of artists who have exited the streaming giant in recent weeks, ever since Neil Young called out the company for spreading COVID-19 misinformation on The Joe Rogan Experience. Since Young’s music was removed, many artists have either followed suit or offered their support to Rogan, and #CancelSpotify t...
The Pitch: Let’s begin this review with what the dog lovers want to know first. Spoiler alert: Nothing bad happens to the dog. There’s some minor peril, and the climax of the film is tough to watch. But no Marley and Me-esque tragedy lurks in the final act. At the end of the film, the dog is fine. With that out of the way, let’s talk about Dog, the often-charming road trip dramedy that marks Channing Tatum‘s (co)-directing debut, starring Tatum alongside a trio of Belgian Malinoises for a darker and more emotionally affecting film than you might expect from its marketing. What the Trailers Don’t Mention: All the advertising for Dog sells a pretty authentic version of the film as a whole: Former Army Ranger Jackson Briggs (Tatum) gets tasked with a new mission: Bring a former Army Ranger do...

HipHopWired Featured Video Source: Rob Kim / Getty In today’s episode of Maaaaaan, If Somebody Don’t Come Get This Rich White Boy, Chet Hanks, son of legendary actor Tom Hanks, has just thrown his father all the way under the paternal bus in a YouTube video in which he claimed he “didn’t have a strong male role model” growing up. But Chet isn’t appropriating the real woes of actual people who grew up without a father because his dad didn’t teach I’m the birds and the bees or how to ride a bike—he’s apparently crying because his father didn’t tell him that he was the best and that everyone else is just salty about it. “I didn’t have a strong male role model to tell me…‘Bro, f**k these people. They are just jealous of you,’” Chet said in reference to the disrespect he endured from his p...
