FOREIGNER’s MICK JONES On IAN MCDONALD: ‘He Was A Musician Of Great Substance And Versatility’

FOREIGNER leader Mick Jones has paid tribute to the band’s original guitarist Ian McDonald, who passed away peacefully on February 9 in his home in New York City, surrounded by his family. He was 75 years old. Earlier today, Jones released the following statement: “When I had the idea of forming FOREIGNER, Ian McDonald was among the first I turned to. He was and always will be a giant on the English progressive rock scene. He was a musician of great substance and versatility. It was a real thrill to work with him then and again at more recent FOREIGNER concerts. He will be sadly missed.” A master multi-instrumentalist, McDonald‘s musicianship was an integral part of launching celebrated progressive rock band KING CRIMSON. His keyboard and woodwind contributions led ...

Foxes, Introverted Pop Star, Dances Back Into The Spotlight

By Jack Irvin Foxes didn’t plan to take six years off between albums, but following the release of her most recent full-length project, 2016’s All I Need, the U.K. singer-songwriter born Louisa Rose Allen was in need of a reset. Ever since bursting onto the scene as the vocalist on Zedd’s Grammy-winning 2012 single “Clarity,” which dominated dance floors globally and scored Foxes a record deal with Sony Music, she felt pressured to recreate its success with more EDM tracks. The musician recalls playing her synthpop debut album, 2014’s Glorious, for American label representatives before it dropped and being told, “This isn’t going to work. We need 12 ‘Clarity’s” — which she had no intention of creating. “I wrote my first album in a bedroom,” Foxes tells MTV News from her East London ho...

Bop Shop: Songs From Pusha T, LØLØ And Maggie Lindemann, Madison Rose, And More

Yena: “Smiley” (ft. Bibi) Making her highly anticipated solo debut, K-pop soloist Yena (formerly of Iz*One) returns to the scene with “Smiley,” a dynamic and effervescent title track that feels like sunshine on your skin. The bass-heavy melody is perfectly layered with synth, creating an electrifying melody that feels retro, yet current. “Smiley” features everyone’s favorite K-R&B it girl, Bibi, whose sultry vocals provide a dark contrast to Yena’s bright and bubbly pop sound, further adding texture to the track. The accompanying visual perfectly matches “Smiley”’s vibrant energy, utilizing colorful sets, creative styling, and animated elements to make the song truly come to life. Though this is definitely not Yena’s debut, it does mark the start of a new and exciting chapter for her. ...

The Vinyl Countdown

Blessed (and weird) are the record store saints, who save God-forsaken disks from ending up in landfill graveyards, finding them venerating homes, instead.  Unlike most independent record retailers following today’s standard playbook, replacing compact discs and used vinyl in their bins with virgin 12-inch vinyl re-issues and contemporary pressings, a few shopkeepers still operate shrines to holy relics of the 1950s to 1980s–original 45 rpm singles. No new ones are being pressed, so these halo-like plastic wafers inspire religious fervor and even madness Consider Val Shively, who claims to stock over 4 million records in his overstuffed three-story shop, R&B Records. To a western suburb of Philadelphia trek collectors from the Far East and Europe. They come in search of mid-XXth C...

Charli XCX and Rina Sawayama Channel Witchcraft in “Beg for You” Video: Stream

Charli XCX and Rina Sawayama are unleashing their witchcraft in the music video for their new single “Beg for You.” The Nick Harwood-directed visual for the infectious dance floor banger finds the two avant-garde stars quite literally on an altar, surrounded by other young women in shades of red, pink, and black as they’re forced into a ritual by a white-cloaked priest of the occult and his latex-clad assistant. “Oh don’t you leave me this way/ Won’t you wait another hour or two?/ You know I need you to stay/ Don’t make me beg for you/ ‘Cause I’ll beg for you” Charli belts as she slices her hand and her blood pours into a red pool for the priest to drink. However, the duo’s innate power ultimately wins out, taking over the other women in a freeing dance party as sparks explode around them....

Rap Song of the Week: Pusha T Makes His Triumphant Return with “Diet Coke”

Our new music feature Rap Song of the Week runs down the hip-hop tracks you need to hear every Friday. Check out the full playlist here. This week, Pusha T shares “Diet Coke,” the lead single from his upcoming fourth album. In recent interviews, Pusha T has been talking up his fourth studio LP, reportedly titled It’s Not Dry Yet, as “the album of the motherfucking year.” It’s a pretty standard boast for any upper echelon MC, but he’s added fuel to the fire by describing it as “one thousand percent rap superhero shit.” Whatever that actually means, the drug rap king is back with a vengeance after taking roughly two years off to spend time with his son. Despite running in circles with the likes of Pharrell and Kanye West while having been long considered one of the best rappers alive, King P...
