Black Country, New Road Don’t Care If You Hate Their Ambitious New LP

“We knew that people weren’t going to like it,” says Black Country, New Road‘s Lewis Evans. “And [now] I know that people won’t like it.” It doesn’t read like a ringing endorsement of Ants From Up There, the recently issued second album from the British sextet. But the saxophonist correctly insists it’s the “best thing [they’ve] ever done” — a more mature song cycle that broadens the emotional range of 2021’s For the First Time.  Where that acclaimed debut relied heavily on deadpan speak-sing snark and brooding post-punk riffs, Ants is often bright and opened-armed, landing somewhere between ornate art-rock and Arcade Fire-sized chamber-pop. They’ve always had style to spare — now they have heart.  “One of the main aims of the second album was to explore, first of all, more ...

Amanda Seyfried Practices Her Fake Baritone in Trailer for Hulu’s The Dropout: Watch

Over the past few years, Stanford dropout Elizabeth Holmes went from being the country’s youngest self-made female billionaire to one of the most infamous scammers to come up in Silicon Valley. Today, Hulu has unveiled the official trailer for their forthcoming limited drama series The Dropout, which stars Amanda Seyfried as the disgraced Theranos founder and CEO. Premiering March 3rd, The Dropout documents Holmes’ career trajectory from an ambitious chemical engineering student to the defendant in a highly-publicized criminal trial. The trailer nods to plenty of Holmes’ trademarks, from her black turtlenecks, bright red lipstick, and messy buns, to that phony baritone speaking voice. Seyfried doesn’t quite nail Holmes’ low timbre, but we’ll let it slide because it’s important to...

ATEEZ Are Just Getting Started

“Did you see the new Spider-Man: No Way Home?” asks Yunho, one of the eight members of ATEEZ. “His famous line is, ‘With great power comes great responsibility.’ We have more and more fans coming in, and we want to carry that responsibility well.” It’s a thoughtful — and fair — observation. Since the last time they were in America, ATEEZ have exploded. Three years ago, the eight-member group (Hongjoong, Seonghwa, Yunho, Mingi, San, Yeosang, Wooyoung, and Jongho) played a venue in Los Angeles that held 1,500 people; on January 30th of this year, they appeared before a sold-out crowd at The Forum (capacity: 18,000). This change is an easy way to visibly quantify the group’s growth, but feels like too basic of a measure of the show ATEEZ puts on. The January 30th concert at The Forum ran over...

Take, for example, Netflix, which has established a presence in the Oscar race and has some serious contenders in its stable, including The Power of the Dog, Passing, Don’t Look Up, and The Lost Daughter. Oh, not to mention tick, tick…Boom!, which is not just one of many musicals in contention for recognition this year, but also one of the several projects which might help Lin-Manuel Miranda complete his EGOT. (Though...

You Can Now Run ‘Wordle’ on Your Game Boy

Wordle has taken the Internet by storm over the recent weeks, but luckily for retro gaming purists, they can now join in on the fun thanks to hardware hacker Stacksmashing over on Twitter, who managed to port the game onto the classic Nintendo Game Boy. A result of three hours of tinkering after being stuck inside because of the rain, Stacksmashing managed to create a ROM of Wordle that can run on the vintage handheld device, although given its limited size and hardware capabilities, the hacker was unable to bring over the entire word list from the game. Instead, he used a bloom filter to check if an entered word is one of the 8,000 most commonly used English words. If you’d like to give it a try, you can download the free ROM from Stacksmashing, which works with both the original dev...

Warner Bros. Is Being Sued for Releasing ‘The Matrix: Resurrections’ on HBO Max

The Matrix: Resurrections producers Village Roadshow have sued Warner Bros. for allegedly sabotaging the theatrical release of the film by releasing it on HBO Max on the same day. In 2020, Warner Bros. announced that it would deploy a release strategy that saw the studio make films like Dune, The Suicide Squad, King Richard and now The Matrix: Resurrections available to HBO Max subscribers on the same day as its theatrical debut. According to Variety, The controversial move leads to “the studio paying out millions of dollars to profit participants to make up for lost box office revenue.” The lawsuit cites that Warner Bros. did not notify nor consult Village Roadshow that The Matrix: Resurrections would be made available on HBO Max. The film only grossed $148 million USD at the box office t...

‘Better Call Saul’ Final Season Teaser Hints at Premiere Date

After a long two-year wait for fans of the show, Better Call Saul is finally returning this year for its final season, and a new teaser from AMC potentially hints at its premiere date. Featured above, the short clip shows the dreaded Salamanca twins walking through a crime scene where investigators are gathering evidence. On the ground, we see two labels with the letters “D” and “R” in the foreground, possibly hinting at the sixth season’s release date: “D” being the fourth letter in the alphabet representing April and “R” being 18th. The date also happens to land on a Monday, which is when AMC usually broadcasts new episodes of Better Call Saul, so there’s a good chance the hint isn’t just a coincidence. As expected, Bob Odenkirk will be reprising his role as Jimmy McGill/Saul G...
