On The Radar Latin: Akim, Mabiland & More Emerging Artists to Discover

Every month, Billboard Latin editors will feature a small group of new, or relatively unknown artists, whose music we love. Think “diamantes en bruto” or “diamonds in the rough.” These are newcomers who have yet to impact the mainstream — but whose music excites us, and who we believe our readers should make a point to discover. In honor of Black History Month, our inaugural “On The Radar Latin” list includes five Afro-Latino rising stars you should be listening to. See our recommendations below: Artist: AkimCountry: Panama Why They Should Be on Your Radar: It was at an intimate listening session last year where I first discovered Akim’s music, and his potential to possibly become the next breakout artist deriving from Panama. [embedded content][embedded content] “It’s about when you’re in the early stages of a relationship and you get so worried that the other person’s mind will change at the flip of a switch,” Minnette said in a statement about the meaning behind the song. “It’s about stressing over the smallest things for no reason, but it’s definitely self-aware about the fact that I’m doing this all to myself.” Following their 2019 Nothing Happens, the new album is out on March 25 and is available for pre-order now. The 10-track record was produced by the multi-Gra...

Erin Rae Breaks Down Her New Album Lighten Up Track by Track: Exclusive Stream

For our Track by Track feature, artists open up about the stories behind each song on their latest album. Today, Erin Rae takes us track by track through her new album, Lighten Up. After releasing her debut effort, Putting on Airs, in 2018, Erin Rae was living as the troubadours do. She spent the years between that release and the start of the pandemic on the road and, like any other artist, found that life come to a screeching halt. On Friday, February 4th, she’ll return with her new album, Lighten Up, an appropriate title both for our times and for the album. This latest collection is an amalgam of dreamy, psychedelic country, indie-rock, and believably vintage folk. Thematically, too, the album is a bit like an old kaleidoscope — social commentary and musings on gender equality mor...

Dakota Johnson Cast as Madame Web in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe Film

Sony is looking to wrap up Dakota Johnson as the star of its first female-led Spider-Man universe adventure, Madame Web. The project was first announced back in 2019, with Morbius writers Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless working on the screenplay. Now, Deadline reports that Johnson is in final talks to lead the picture, with S.J. Clarkson (Marvel’s Jessica Jones, The Defenders) onboard as director. Created in 1980 by writer Denny O’Neil and artist John Romita Jr., Madame Web is a mutant with incredible psychic and clairvoyant capabilities. (Considering Marvel now owns mutants in their entirety again, it’s likely the character’s origins will be altered for the movie.) Johnson’s casting hints her general appearance will also be changed, as she’s most often depicted as an el...

Classic Reviews: Pearl Jam, Yield

This article originally appeared in the March 1998 issue of SPIN. Angels are God’s designated hitters. They’re represented in Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, among many other religions; they pretty much show up anyplace people put out a punch bowl and a turntable. Messengers of supreme beings, keepers of the gate, angels are the ones who feel the full weight of responsibility. “Just call me an angel,” Eddie Vedder seems to groan over the fadeout of a new song on Pearl Jam‘s fifth album. And he’s got plenty of company. Angels are all over Yield: “Given to Fly” is about a seraph who breaks free; there are references to angels in the dirt; and “Do the Evolution” even features a choir singing hallelujahs. Angels have become Vedder’s nervy way of talking about himself these days—he’s a m...

Nick Cave and Warren Ellis Doc This Much I Know to Be True Gets First Trailer: Watch

A new documentary on the creative partnership between Nick Cave and Warren Ellis premieres at Berlin Film Festival this month, and the first trailer is out today, as Deadline notes. Check it out below. This Much I Know to Be True, which documents Cave’s Ghosteen (with the Bad Seeds) and Carnage (with Ellis), is directed by the musicians’ Australian compatriot Andrew Dominik, who enlisted the duo to score his 2007 movie The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford and later shot the documentary One More Time With Feeling. The film, due for U.S. release later this year, is “a portrait of the lives of all of us as we move from innocence to experience, attune to the world and its attendant loss, and eventually confront our own mortality,” according to press materials quoted by De...
