For Lil Wayne, Mac Miller & More, Bringing Mixtapes to Streaming Is a Boon — But Clearing Them Is ‘Hell’

In the last few years, many cult-favorite hip-hop mixtapes from the 1990s and 2000s have made their way to streaming platforms, including Apple Music, Tidal and Spotify. Fan demand helped, but the hard work was done by sample clearance experts like Deborah Mannis-Gardner, who negotiated with copyright owners and labels whose songs and recordings were sampled on the tapes, to secure the necessary licenses. In 2021 alone, streaming services started offering Mac Miller’s critically acclaimed 2014 mixtape Faces, A$AP Rocky’s 2011 debut Live. Love. A$AP; Megan Thee Stallion’s compilation project Something For Thee Hotties which includes a handful of her standalone freestyles from the last few years, and Nicki Minaj’s breakout 2009 project, Beam Me Up Scotty. “This all started during COVID last ...

The nominations arrived Wednesday morning (Feb. 2) for this year’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and appropriate for Groundhog Day, it’s a lot of names we’ve seen before — with 10 out of the 17 names being repeat nominees, and six of those 10 holdovers from 2021’s shortlist. Mixed in with the more familiar artists to Rock Hall voters, though, are a handful of first-timers — ranging from obvious rock icons to hitmakers more associated with the worlds of pop, country, R&B and rap — which means voters will have some interesting (and likely challenging) decisions to make in the months to come. Here’s how Billboard breaks down the likeliness of the nominees for induction, listed from least to most likely. FELA KUTI It’s a tough ask for the Afrobeat icon to be inducted by straight vote, s...

Last month, Ye took to Instagram to request “final edit and approval” over a new three-part documentary about him, Jeen-Yuhs, ahead of its debut on Netflix. Directors Coodie and Chike say that they don’t plan on granting the rapper editorial control over the project. In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, the directors said that they hadn’t heard from Ye before the Instagram post and the three-part documentary, which was already finished at the time, will still release as planned. “Me and Chike have a company called Creative Control because you don’t want to lose your creative control,” Coodie told the publication.
