After 38 Years, Peacemaker Composer Values His Diversity in Star Wars, Superheroes and CSI

There are shows that succeed, shows that explode, and shows that take over large swaths of the internet immediately after their release. Peacemaker is all three. From its intro sequence (which is probably the best one on television right now) to its character development, James Gunn’s signature blend of action and humor works perfectly for the newest HBO Max DC series. But aside from John Cena shocking the world with his comedic timing and the generally flawless supporting cast, one of the finest aspects of the show (and something which Gunn always takes very seriously) is its soundtrack. Composed by the same duo of veterans who handled HBO Max’s other live-action DC shows like Titans and Doom Patrol, Kevin Kiner and Clint Mansell, Peacemaker sounds every bit as good as any other Gunn-helm...

Graham Nash and India.Arie Pull Music From Spotify

Graham Nash and India Arie are the latest artists to pull their music from Spotify due to Joe Rogan. However, their reasoning for doing so is very different. Nash said in a statement that he “completely agrees” with his Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young bandmate Neil Young after “having heard the COVID disinformation spread by Joe Rogan on Spotify. I am requesting that my solo recordings be removed from the service.” Young was the first of various artists to remove their music from the streaming giant, because of Rogan’s alleged spreading of COVID misinformation, but also in protest against the unfair ways Spotify pays musicians. Joni Mitchell and Nils Lofgren followed Young not longer after. Arie shared a statement on Instagram that she is removing her work off Spotify because Young “opened ...

Dan Charnas’s Dilla Time: The Life and Afterlife of J Dilla, the Hip-Hop Producer Who Reinvented Rhythm

For music journalist Dan Charnas, telling J Dilla’s story was a personal quest. Dilla, the highly influential rap producer, died in 2006. “In the 15 years since his death, journalists and academics have written about him, and musicians have extolled his work,” Charnas says. “But no one had put it all together in a definitive statement: That this beatmaker who worked out of a basement in Detroit literally pioneered a new rhythmic time-feel, one that traditional musicians and electronic producers around the world now use. So, I felt a sense of urgency to recount that story, that innovation, and make that argument so he can have his rightful place in history.” Charnas began his work on Dilla Time in 2017 with a course he taught at the Clive Davis Institute at NYU. “The reporting and research ...

My Idea Announce Debut Album CRY MFER, Share Title Track: Stream

Palberta’s Lily Konigsberg and Water From Your Eyes’ Nate Amos have formed a new band called My Idea. Their debut album, CRY MFER, will be released on April 22nd via Hardly Art. My Idea have a bit of a chaotic origin story, and CRY MFER is no different. Konigsberg and Amos first teamed up in fall 2020, when the former sought the latter out to produce her solo record. Soon enough, their relationship became more collaborative — and toxic. “We definitely were like, oh, maybe we’re in love?” Konigsberg recalled in a statement. Recorded right before the Palberta singer-guitarist got sober, the pair — who are now best friends — used CRY MFER to get drunk and challenge each other emotionally and musically. “Thank God we’re not those people [anymore],” Konigsberg said. Despite its heavy ...

Graham Nash Pulls Music from Spotify: “I Completely Agree with and Support My Friend Neil”

Graham Nash has joined his longtime friend and bandmate, Neil Young, in pulling his music from Spotify. “Having heard the Covid disinformation spread by Joe Rogan on Spotify, I completely agree with and support my friend Neil Young and I am requesting that my solo recordings be removed from the service,” Nash said in a statement released on Tuesday. “There is a difference between being open to varying viewpoints on a matter and knowingly spreading false information which some 270 medical professionals have derided as not only false but dangerous,” Nash continued. “Likewise, there is a difference between misinformation, in which one is unaware that what is being said is false, versus disinformation which is knowingly false and intended to mislead and sway public opinion.” Advertisement Rela...

Weezer’s Rivers Cuomo Wades Into Spotify Scrum, Launches Weezify Streaming Service

There’s more than one way to weigh in on the Spotify dust-up between the streamer and Neil Young. On Monday, Weezer‘s Rivers Cuomo waded into the morass not by pulling his band’s music from the service as Young did, but by launching a Weezer-specific streaming destination of his own called Weezify. Explore See latest videos, charts and news See latest videos, charts and news The move came as a number of artists have joined Young in asking that their music be removed from Spotify in reaction to the COVID-19 misinformation being spread by the service’s biggest podcasting star, Joe Rogan. Gomez Founder Tom Gray Appointed Chair of Ivors Academy

LONDON – Tom Gray, a prominent artist rights advocate and founding member of British rock band Gomez, has been elected chair of The Ivors Academy, the U.K. association for songwriters and composers. Gray has been a key figure in the global push for creators to receive a greater share of streaming royalties. In April 2020, he founded the #BrokenRecord campaign, calling for reform of the music industry and a rebalance of power away from record labels and streaming platforms and towards artists. Gray’s #BrokenRecord campaign ran alongside The Ivors Academy’s #FixStreaming drive, attracting support from stars like Paul McCartney, The Rolling Stones and Coldplay frontman Chris Martin, and compelling U.K. regulators to take a closer look at how the record business operates. That led to a nine-mo...
