After Overnight Internet Success, FUR Are Done Coming of Age

Success is where you find it in the constrictive new COVID age. At least that’s how William Murray, the frontman for one of 2021’s most delightful new bands, the ‘60s-jangly FUR, says. Since it isn’t necessarily happening in the old chart-climbing hit-single way that it used to, artists are turning to online platforms, often with surprising results. For instance, his quirky quartet from Brighton, UK had no expectations when it quietly posted to YouTube its video for the 2017 single “If You Know That I’m Lonely,” a sweet, shimmering confection awash in the singer’s Byrdsian chiming guitar chords and inimitable chipmunk-chipper warble. After years of serious songwriting struggles while studying the music business in college, Murray had finally assembled the perfect group to realize his visio...

Destroyer Returns With Catchy Yet Ominous ‘Tintoretto, It’s For You’

Destroyer, the experimental rock project by Dan Bejar, released the first song from its forthcoming album, Labyrinthitis, out on March 25 via Merge. “Tintoretto, It’s for You” is propelled by a chilling piano-and-drum arrangement that rises and falls around Bejar’s eerie incantations (“Do you remember the mythic beast?”). The album is available for preorder here. In the accompanying music video for “Tintoretto,” the mysticism of Bejar’s lyrics is felt in the video direction by David Galloway. The video shows scenes of everyday neighborhood sights, contrasted with moody lighting portray a tone of familiar isolation, reminiscent of early lockdown when the album was written and produced by Bejar and his frequent collaborator, John Collins.  “I had an idea of writing a couple of lines on ...

Wolf Like Me Review: Josh Gad and Isla Fisher’s Quirky Genre Romance Feels a Little Too Forgettable

The Pitch: The new Peacock series Wolf Like Me is a sweet and quirky dramedy that makes great use of the talents of Isla Fisher and Josh Gad. It also, however, happens to fall into too many of the traps which doom the original series being made today for streaming. Again, the show itself is fine. But it can’t escape the category of being just forgettable enough to potentially doom it to obscurity; lingering forever in the corners of streaming services, joining its spiritual sisters Gypsy, Homecoming, Maniac, and countless others. The Reason Why This Review Isn’t Very Long: The central twist of Wolf Like Me is one that Peacock would prefer not get spoiled prior to premiere — in fact, the screeners were sent out with this note from creator Abe Forsythe: “I’d love for audiences to go into wat...

Burke Shelley, the singer and bassist of the influential Welsh metal band Budgie, has died at the age of 71. He passed away this evening in his sleep at Heath Hospital in Cardiff, his birth town. He was 71 years old. Please respect the family during this time. With love, His four children: Ela, Osian, Dimitri and Nathaniel.” Although no cause of death was given, Shelley had suffered from health problems over the last few years (a genetic disorder called Stickler syndrome, plus two aortic aneurysms), which kept Budgie off of the road and from issuing new music. The Weeknd Hints at New Trilogy, Shares New “Gasoline” Video: Watch

Sonically, The Weeknd’s new album, Dawn FM, draws from a similar throwback era as his 2020 effort, After Hours, and it looks like fans should expect more of the same from his next studio set. In a recent tweet, the superstar explained the albums are part of a greater collection, writing “I wonder… did you know you’re experiencing a new trilogy?” Longtime fans of The Weeknd will recall the Toronto native got his start with a trio of 2011 mixtapes — House of Balloons, Thursday, and Echoes of Silence — establishing the mysterious artist as an emerging force in R&B. After signing to Republic Records, the projects were collected together as part of an official release titled Trilogy featuring a handful of bonus tracks. Along with the teaser, The Weeknd released a new music video f...

The Weeknd Confronts His Older Self in New “Gasoline” Music Video

Four days removed from dropping his highly-anticipated fifth studio album Dawn FM, The Weeknd is continuing his promotional initiatives by dropping his latest music video for “Gasoline.” The track is another pop-focused and upbeat number that has production assistance from Matt Cohn, Max Martin and Oscar Holter, and the accompanying video — directed by Matilda Finn — exhibits the Toronto artist navigating his way through a creepy dance club. The nearly five minute clip opens up with ants crawling creepily around The Weeknd’s earphone-plugged ears as he drives through recklessly through a storm and eventually crashes into a do not enter sign. In similar fashion to the “Sacrifice” video, the scene transitions into a dark and deranged dance party where the pop crooner encounters his older sel...

The Weeknd Unveils Video for ‘Gasoline’

The Weeknd released a new video for “Gasoline,” the second track off his most recent album, Dawn FM. Just like his other videos, things take a dark turn here. Interestingly, in a tweet yesterday, the artist also known as Abel Tesfaye hinted that Dawn FM could be part of a trilogy. i wonder… did you know you’re experiencing a new trilogy? pic.twitter.com/G5TfjvJVyM...

Normani and Taraji P. Henson Get Sprayed For Not Slaying on ‘That’s My Jam’: Watch

It’s a New Year and Jimmy Fallon is clearly enjoying his new NBC show, That’s My Jam. On Monday night’s episode, The Tonight Show host roped-in a starry lineup for a round of “Slay It Don’t Spray It,” a game which puts contestants’ lyrical skills to the test. Failure is met with a mighty squirt to the face. Entering the Doombox was the pairing of singer Rita Ora and New Zealand filmmaker Taika Waititi, who faced off against Empire actor Taraji P. Henson and pop star Normani. It didn’t start so well for Normani and Taraji, who tackled Jennifer Lopez’s “Waiting for Tonight.” It didn’t end well either, as both were slammed with water.
