Pussy Riot’s Nadya Tolokonnikova and Nika Nikulshina have been officially labeled “foreign agents” by the Russian government, BBC News and the Associated Press report. The designation is a Russian government effort to stifle dissent and discredit anyone carrying the label. “Foreign agents” are required to append disclaimer statements to their social media posts, news reports, and other public-facing content. Pussy Riot acknowledged the disclaimer requirement in a tweet, but added that they won’t adhere to the requirement and will appeal the decision in court. “Russia will be free,” they wrote. Earlier this week, it was reported that the human rights organization Memorial was shuttered for its failure to identify as a foreign agent. Tolokonnikova was arrested and spent two years in prison a...

Drummer Paul Mazurkiewicz (CANNIBAL CORPSE), guitarist Taylor Nordberg (INHUMAN CONDITION, THE ABSENCE, FORE), bassist Vernon Blake (ANARCHUS) and vocalist Brian Stephenson (FORE, OLD JAMES) have joined forces in a new rock and roll band called UMBILICUS. Mazurkiewicz says: “UMBILICUS was formed in the summer of 2020 and driven by our love of rock and roll from the late ’60s, ’70s and early ’80s. “I’ve been listening to well-known bands like GRAND FUNK [RAILROAD], BAD COMPANY and STEPPENWOLF and not-so-well-known bands like SIR LORD BALTIMORE and LUCIFER’S FRIEND for the last 20 years or so now. Swedish metallers AVATAR have shared another new song, “Cruel And Unusual”. Check it out below. “It feels self-evident,” the band states about the track. “Violent thoughts channeled through violent riffs, demented thoughts driven by a sick groove. It’s simply a very sexy song.” Earlier this fall, AVATAR, who are known to smash the boundaries between band, theater troupe, and cinematic masterminds with a series of celebrated albums and videos, and the immersive world of Avatar Country, a fantastical land where metal rules supreme, released four new songs. AVATAR also previously announced they signed to Thirty Tigers and have launched their own Black Waltz Records imprint. In October, AVATAR postponed the last five shows on its “Going Hunting...
KILLSWITCH ENGAGE frontman Jesse Leach has implored his social media followers to engage in civil discourse about sometimes divisive issues, saying we “have much to learn from one another even if we do feel a stark disagreement with another.” The 43-year-old singer, who has been open about his battles with anxiety and depression, took to his Instagram on Thursday (December 30) to share a short clip from an earlier Instagram Live video he made, and he included the following message: “I thought this particular part was worth a share if nothing else then to shed some light on why I am not screaming and preaching my (ever changing) opinions (be it political or about this virus) all over social media. “This is one of those moments that I did not plan or think through. A Twitter user has just stumbled upon an interesting Easter egg left in Akira by an overworked animator. Thanks to 4K resolution, the user was able to spot the words on the side of a machine which was thought to be filled with jumbled text. MOU User HikozaTwi’s discovery translates to: Whydo Ihave to evendraw thispart!Give me abreak! Geez This part can be found in the scene during the prediction from the 25th ESPer. Fans of the classic animated film have been sharing the Easter egg as it acts as a sort of time capsule, preserving the human element of the animation, where an artist toiled over each frame in 1988. Ciara filled in as host for The Ellen DeGeneres Show on Thursday (Dec. 30), and guest Normani told her she’s “almost done” with her debut album. The 25-year-old singer opened up about how being in Fifth Harmony was allowed her to “hide.” But now that she’s in the solo spotlight, Normani says she’s been experiencing firsthand all the difficulties with putting out a project — especially her first — all on her own. “People underestimate how hard it is and how much effort we put into one project, one body of work. And coming out of a girl group, there was a lot that I hard to figure out about myself and fears that I had to deal with head on,” she said. “I was always so safe being in a girl group. I remember my mom when I was little, she was like, ‘Why do you want to be in a girl grou...
Justin Bieber’s pop/soul jam “Peaches” (featuring Daniel Caesar and Giveon) broke a Grammy record that was established just last year by Beyoncé’s “Black Parade” — the song of the year nominee with the most credited co-writers. Eleven songwriters are nominated for their work on “Peaches.” That’s two more than received nominations for co-writing “Black Parade,” which was nominated for song of the year in late 2020. Explore See latest videos, charts and news In the early decades of the Grammy Awards, songs nominated for song of the year were the work of just one or two, and occasionally three, songwriters. That has changed dramatically as “songwriting by committee” has become more commonplace. Final round voting for the 64th annual Grammy Awards is underway. Voting members of the Recording A...
