“Telepatia,” “Yonaguni,” and “Pepas” sent Latin artists Kali Uchis, Bad Bunny and Farruko skyrocketing to the top of Billboard’s Hot Latin Songs chart this year. Meanwhile, fueled by their massive success on TikTok, Rauw Alejandro (as a solo act) and Gera MX entered the all-genre Hot 100 chart for the first time. Needless to say, it was a good year for Latin music, which provided a soundtrack for all your moods: Karol G’s “200 Copas” for your heartbreak, Calibre 50’s “A La Antiguita” to flaunt your romanticism, and Yotuel’s Latin Grammy-winning “Patria y Vida” for your inner activist. It’s list season, the only season that matters. That said, let’s talk about a list from nine years ago. Specifically, SPIN’s 100 Greatest Guitarists list, which highlighted a lot of names that don’t usually get brought up, including Arto Lindsay and Sonny Sharrock. It also didn’t take half-measures going left-field, like putting Jam Master Jay in the top 10. It was as notable for who it didn’t include: the whole point was that the usual suspects like Eddie Van Halen and Yngwie Malmsteen weren’t on there. In fact, playing fast in the traditional metal sense was a guarantee for exclusion. That’s not to say shred wasn’t represented, but it was more unorthodox speed demons like Ben Weinman, Trey Azagthoth and Mick Barr that made the cut. The list was bold, to say the least, and it was a much-n...

Thom Yorke has returned with the sixth edition of his ongoing Sonos radio show, “In the Absence Thereof.” Check out the playlist below. “In the Absence Thereof…v6” is a particularly cinematic mix. Whereas Yorke’s last playlist featured the familiar sounds of Tom Waits and Madlib, this installment veers toward the instrumental. Chiming percussion dominates Mark Fell’s opening song “INTRA-3,” while droning keys swell in Terry Riley’s “Across the Lake of the Ancient World” and Arvo Pärt’s “Cantus in Memory of Benjamin Britten.” Yorke’s latest mix isn’t all instrumental, however. UK rappers Space Afrika and Blackhaine spit over a glitchy beat in “B£E,” and The Bug’s “How bout dat” sees FFSYTHO rap over a slow, dark crawl. Yorke’s son, Noah, even appears on the playlist with “Trying Too H...
