Filmmaker of the Year Janicza Bravo on Zola’s Legacy, Directing TV, and Why She Wants to Write Her Next Film on Her Own

Our 2021 Annual Report wraps up with the announcement of Janicza Bravo as our Filmmaker of the Year. You can find all of our awards, lists, and articles about the best music, film, and TV of 2021 in one place here. A thread that ran through Consequence’s hourlong conversation with filmmaker of the year Janicza Bravo was the concept of what we leave behind in life. This isn’t too surprising, given that both Bravo and this writer were musing about what’s like to be a woman who just turned 40. But what was a bit unexpected was that we got there by way of David Tennant. “The first line of the obituary, I suspect, has been written,” the Scottish actor said a few years ago, commenting on how playing the 10th Doctor of Doctor Who has affected his legacy. When Consequence brought up that quote, it...

The Pandemic Has Changed Movies, But There’s Still Big Bucks in Blockbusters

Our 2021 Annual Report continues with a deep dive into how COVID-19 has changed “event” movies. As December rolls along, stay tuned for more awards, lists, and articles about the best music, film, and TV of 2021. You can find it all in one place here. Spider-Man: No Way Home, which hit theaters in the US on December 16th, is poised to shatter box office records. One of the most anticipated blockbuster films of 2021 (maybe even of the last five years), all eyes are on Peter Parker and Co. to rake in the kind of cash that superheroes typically did in the Before Times. Of course, the film is about to smash said records in a very different world than when pre-production on it began in 2017. The COVID-19 pandemic has done astronomical damage to countless businesses, and the movie industry was n...

BTS Stop Traffic Performing “Butter” on Corden: Watch

BTS literally stopped traffic during their latest appearance on Corden, blocking Geneese Ave in Los Angeles to perform “Butter,” “Permission to Dance,” “and “Dynamite.” This is becoming a habit for James Corden, who halted traffic over the summer with a reviled flash mob. But if anyone can make spending more time in LA traffic lovable, it’s the Bangtan Boys. For their performance of “Butter,” they sang alongside dancers dressed as sticks of emulsified cream. A sign labelled “BUT” rolled from one side of the street to be joined by “TER” coming the other way, as the K-Pop idols churned through their choreography. Like the product for which it was named, this “Butter” might give you a heart attack. Check out all three performances below. BTS, who after playing a record-setting series of ...

Precious Metal: Our 1991 Metallica Cover Story

This article originally appeared in the October 1991 issue of SPIN. In honor of Metallica playing their 40th anniversary shows in San Francisco this weekend, we’re republishing it here. Near the end of Metallica‘s last tour, rhythm guitarist and vocalist James Hetfield got the idea for a party. “It was going to be great,” he says. “Farm animals, midgets serving drinks, tits everywhere—that kind of shit. Jägermeister ended up sponsoring the thing and giving away free drinks. There were barf puddles everywhere.” There was only one problem. “The midgets wouldn’t do it. They heard the name Metallica, and they said no, we’ll get abused.” The midgets weren’t the first ones to balk at the name Metallica. For what a name it is! It suggests not a band but an Orwellian nation, like Oceania. That ext...

Spike Lee and Netflix Sign Multi-Year Partnership

Academy Award winner Spike Lee and his production company 40 Acres and a Mule Filmworks have entered into a multi-year creative partnership with streaming giant Netflix. The news comes after the success of Lee’s previous collaborations including Da 5 Bloods, She’s Gotta Have It, Rodney King and See You Yesterday. Variety previously sat down with Spike Lee who continuously praised the streamer for taking “proverbial risks” on projects most studios might be hesitant to do so. Prior to Netflix picking up Da 5 Bloods and She’s Gotta Have It, the projects were both turned down by other production houses. In a statement announcing his official partnership with Netflix, Lee states, “There is no better way for me and my company 40 Acres and a Mule Filmworks to begin the new year than renew our par...

‘Shang-Chi’ Director Wants Jackie Chan to Join the Sequel

Shortly after Marvel greenlit a sequel to Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, the film’s director Destin Daniel Cretton has now spoken up about his interest in bringing onboard renowned martial artist and actor Jackie Chan. Speaking to CinemaBlend, Cretton said that having Chan star in one of his films is “a lifelong dream” of his and that he’d love for the actor to take part in the upcoming Shang-Chi sequel. “Yeah, let’s put that out there,” he exclaimed. Chan himself hasn’t responded to the new comments from Cretton either, so it...

Brady and Rasheed Newson in a statement.”We have stayed true to the original premise of the legacy series — Will’s life is turned upside down after he is forced to leave West Philly and lands in Bel–Air with its gated mansions and wealth, however, our new series brings Will and the Banks family into the world as we know it now.” “During the development of Bel-Air, the most daunting question was: Could we find a young actor who’d be able to step into the role ...

With Marvel‘s Spider-Man: No Way Home premiering across the globe this week, lead actor Tom Holland has now shed more light on the future of his character and his own involvement with the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Speaking to People magazine, Holland said he’s thrilled to have portrayed the web-slinging superhero over the course of the last several films but that it might be time for someone new to take on the role. “I’ve loved every minute of it. I’ve been so grateful to Marvel and Sony for giving us the opportunity and keeping us on and allowing our characters to progress. It’s been amazing,” he remarked. “And that’s why for me, I don’t want to say goodbye to Spider-man, but I feel like we might be ready to say goodbye to [him].” Explaining why he feels ready to move on, Holla...

COREY TAYLOR: ‘ALICE IN CHAINS, To Me, Is One Of The Greatest Rock Bands That Ever Was’

During the question-and-answer portion of his December 13 appearance at Jo Ann Davidson Theatre at the Riffe Center in Columbus, Ohio, SLIPKNOT and STONE SOUR frontman Corey Taylor was asked to name his favorite of the “big four” Seattle grunge bands — SOUNDGARDEN, ALICE IN CHAINS, PEARL JAM and NIRVANA. He responded (as transcribed by BLABBERMOUTH.NET): “It has to be ALICE IN CHAINS. ALICE IN CHAINS, to me, is one of the greatest rock bands that ever was. And I don’t just mean that from a grunge standpoint or metal or anything like that. They revolutionized so much musically and they inspired me to change the way I write music. I mean, full stop, period, the end of sentence. [Late ALICE IN CHAINS frontman] Layne Staley is still one of the greatest fucking singers t...
