Baltimore synthpop band Lower Dens are breaking up. “It’s time for me and Nate [Nelson] to say goodbye to Lower Dens,” lead singer J Hunter wrote in a lengthy post. “We’re proud of what we’ve done, and very lucky to have had so many people supporting us. Spiritually and physically, we, like, can not participate in the music industry any longer. We’re also old, enjoy being with our families, and have other goals in mind.” Lower Dens formed in 2010 and put out four albums together: Twin-Hand Movement (2010), Nootropics (2012), Escape From Evil (2015), and The Competition (2019). In the post, Hunter wrote, “I learned this year that I’m Autistic/have ADHD. I have a name for it now, but it’s always been a part of my identity. When I talked about nerdy conceptual sh...
Michael Sheen has Emmy, Golden Globe, SAG, and BAFTA Award nominations to his name, and now, he’s decided to pass along his wealth. The Good Omens actor says he’s “essentially turned [himself] into a social enterprise, a not-for-profit actor” in an essay penned for The Big Issue. “I’ve realized in the last few years that I want to be one of those people who help other people the way so many people helped me,” Sheen wrote. “I don’t want to just be someone who enjoys the fruits of what other people have done and then pull the drawbridge up and go, well I’m alright Jack, I’ve had a nice time.” The actor continued: “I’m at the stage of my life and career where I have a window of opportunity that will probably never be this good again. I’m able to get people in a room, I can open doors. I ...
Coming on the heels of Thanksgiving’s South Park: Post Covid, Paramount+ has announced a second special from Matt Stone and Trey Parker with the unwieldy title South Park: Post Covid: The Return of Covid, premiering December 16th on the streamer. Devastated by Kenny’s latest death in the previous special, the teaser trailer sees the surviving members of the South Park motley crew turning to time travel in order to bring everyone back together. Watch it below. “If Stan, Kyle, and Cartman could just work together, they could go back in time to make sure Covid never happened and save Kenny’s life,” reads the official logline. “In South Park: Post Covid: The Return of Covid, traveling back to the past seems to be the easy answer until they meet Victor Chaos.” Related Video South Park: Post Cov...
Robbie Shakespeare, the Jamaican bassist and producer who contributed to countless groundbreaking records as one-half of Sly & Robbie, had died at age 68. The Gleaner reports that he passed away in a Florida hospital following kidney surgery. Raised in Kingston by a family of musicians, Shakespeare learned to play the bass from legendary reggae musician Aston “Family Man” Barrett. He met his longtime musical partner, drummer Sly Dunbar, playing in the Revolutionaries, the house band at Channel One Studio. The pair split off from the studio in the 1970s and founded their own Taxi Records, and also continued playing as studio musicians on records like Culture’s 1977 record Two Sevens Clash and Gregory Isaacs’ 1978 LP Cool Ruler. Sly & Robbie were also members of the Compass Poin...
HipHopWired Featured Video Source: The Washington Post / Getty A Virginia statute of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee is set to be melted down into new artwork after being recently removed from the city park where the “I heart negroes in chains” military commander was immortalized in the 1920s. Oh, we’re not talking about the Lee monument in Richmond, Va., that was finally removed last year, but that’s an easy mistake to make since, apparently, a lot of Virginians just really love their 30-foot odes to white supremacy. But this one was in Charlottesville—you know, the city where a bunch of angry and probably sexually frustrated white men marched around with tiki torches until some deranged neo-Nazi killed a woman with his car. Apparently, they’re the types who also love sculpted slavery memo...
HipHopWired Featured Video Since dropping his latest album, They Got Amnesia, French Montana’s been going hard to remind everyone that he’s got some work to be reckoned with and has been dropping off new visuals to prove he’s still that dude. Linking up with Doja Cat and Saweetie for the visuals to “Handstand,” French Montana and company take to the chaotic streets where a revolution is taking place and the crowd takes a break from rioting to turn up with the three artists for a few minutes. We lowkey feel we’re not too far away from something like this taking place. Elsewhere Wiz Khalifa and Juicy J break bread at a fancy dinner before taking to the streets to live out a Tales From The Hood-ish scenario where three gang members get their comeuppance for their clip to “Pop That Trunk.” Che...
Whether it’s the melodic piano stabs, synthesizer riffs, or even the signature four-on-the-floor beats, the undeniable sounds of 90’s house music trigger fond memories for both Noizu and Dombresky. Having been surrounded by its euphonic grooves back in Europe, the duo would eventually incorporate those nostalgic beats in their collaborative projects. Prior to joining forces, though, they found success with their own unique take on contemporary house music. As Noizu rebranded his image, he found success with tracks like “Jungle,” “Wavey,” “Inside My Head” and “DANCE”. Not to be outdone, Dombresky produced a series of big hits as well, in particular “Soul Sacrifice” and “Utopia.” Alre...
Finally—an auction not happening in the metaverse or being sold as an NFT. Iconic guitarist, songwriter, and record producer Nile Rodgers is donating nearly 160 electric guitars, amps, synthesizers, and more to be put up for auction, which will be hosted by Christie’s. All net proceeds will benefit the We Are Family Foundation and the auction will begin on Thursday, December 16th at 10AM ET. All of the musical instruments up for auction are ones that Rodgers has used throughout his seminal career, including the 1981 Tokai guitar he used to record Daft Punk‘s single “Get Lucky” (with Pharrell Williams). Rodgers’ 1987 Porsche 930 Targa Turbo will also be up for auction, estimated to be worth $150,000 to $200,000. Recommended Articles ...
Melodic electronica virtuoso Shallou dives deep on his latest project, an emotive, five-track EP titled The Long Way Home. Featuring soul-searching sonics, ethereal vocals and gently-thumping bass beats, it acts as the light at the end of a long tunnel for Shallou, who overcame his recent struggles with mental health—including a diagnosis with obsessive–compulsive disorder—to reconnect with his creative self. Out now via FADER Label, The Long Way Home picks up this story with hopeful opening ballad “Corners.” The atmospheric melodic house piece arose when Shallou finally found hope “coursing through [his] veins again,” he wrote in a press release. “I could finally clear the haze and write about the feelings I had experienced during the pan...
Kaskade‘s Fire & Ice album from 2011 is getting reworked in a big way. The iconic “Room for Happiness” producer took to social media last week to announce version three of his seminal Fire and Ice album, noting that some of the songs will include vocals from the original singer-songwriters. “If you remember or if you were here in Southern California, I had a Fire & Ice 10-year anniversary party,” Kaskade says in his video. “In preparation for that show I was at the studio one day all stressed out. I was here trying to figure out the vibe for what I was going to do that day. In that process I started thinking, ‘What if I just remade the record? What if I made new versions?'” “I’ve been road-testing a bunch of new...
