Billie Eilish’s Name Is Among the Year’s Most Mispronounced Words

“Cheugy” is apparently a lot to chew on. Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter Billie Eilish and Philadelphia Eagles center Jason Kelce have something in common — broadcasters butcher their names. And virtually everyone is having trouble with “omicron.” Explore See latest videos, charts and news All four made it onto this year’s list of most mispronounced words as compiled by the U.S. Captioning Company, which captions and subtitles real-time events on TV and in courtrooms. The list released Tuesday identifies the words that proved most challenging for newsreaders and people on television to pronounce this year. The caption company said it surveyed its members to generate the list, which is now in its sixth year and was commissioned by Babbel, a language-learning platform with headquarter...

Chartbreaker: Mae Muller’s Best ‘Days’ Are Ahead Of Her

North London native Mae Muller started writing songs five years ago, when she was a 19-year-old working in retail and at a pub while also trying to figure out what to do with her life. She set her sights on pop stardom, co-writing the entirety of her 2019 debut album, Chapter 1, but was always reluctant to record a song written by someone else. In November 2020, however, Muller traveled to Sweden — the country had remained open to travelers from the UK during this phase of the pandemic — for a session with writer/producer Neiked, who played Muller a track he’d written called “Better Days.” Muller eventually decided to take on the buoyant, celebratory track, and the single subsequently became Muller’s first Hot 100 hit, climbing to No. 29 since its September release. “I feel like I’m a...

The 100 Best Songs of 2021: Staff List

The past and the future had something of a tug of war over pop music in 2021. In many ways, top 40 was pushed forward this year by artists who blended sounds and styles, expanding its center to include voices from areas of the globe (or corners of society) too rarely represented in the stateside mainstream. But pop history exerted a huge gravitational force as well, whether with retro sounds from the ’70s to the ’00s coming back in vogue, or with new hits being formed from older songs getting covered, sampled, mashed up and/or entirely re-recorded. It certainly made for a robust pop present: a year in which the best songs and biggest hits could come from seemingly anywhere, in space or in time. Whether they were reinventing what had been or reimagining what could be, here were our staff’s ...

War Is Coming In New Trailer For ‘The Matrix: Resurrections’

HipHopWired Featured Video Source: Warner Bros. / Warner Bros. We’re just a few weeks away from returning to The Matrix and learning exactly what Neo’s been up to since he sacrificed himself for the greater good in The Matrix: Revolutions and though the buzz for The Matrix: Resurrections isn’t exactly on Spider-Man: No Way Home levels, we’re still pretty hype about this. Today we got our latest trailer to the upcoming installment in The Matrix franchise and in it we get some more tidbits about what’s going on and how it’s going down. Naturally things revolve around a Neo (Keanu Reeves) who’s seemingly suffering from amnesia as he’s been living a new life without a clue as to who he is or at one point was. As his new friends begin to jog his memory by taking him to familiar places from his ...

Stacey Abrams Announces 2022 Run for Governor of Georgia

HipHopWired Featured Video Source: ERIC BARADAT / Getty Stacey Abrams is officially back in the political race. According to her announcement last week, Abrams formally announced her second candidacy for governor of Georgia after previously being cheated out of the position by current Governor, Brian Kemp, in 2018. Although she wasn’t on the ballot for 2020, it’s no secret that her efforts through her voter’s rights organization, Fair Fight, Abrams not only helped build the Democratic party presence in the state, leading to victories for Joe Biden and Senate candidates Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock— resulting in united and uncontested support from her party. While many are anticipating a historic victory for Abrams, it’s the possibility of the state making history with all four major part...

Slow News Week: Vice President Kamala Harris Trending For Not Using Bluetooth Headphones

HipHopWired Featured Video CLOSE Source: JIM WATSON / Getty Maybe because the news week was slow or someone needed to get some traffic going on their site, Vice President Kamala Harris made the trending rounds for reasons not exactly tied to her political duties. The former senator was the talk of social media after a news piece came out noting that Harris uses wired headphones instead of Bluetooth wireless headphones for reasons that should make sense yet piqued the interests of grizzled journalists all the same. POLITICO released a newsletter on Monday (Dec. 6) with a portion of the release titled “Kamala Harris is Bluetooth-phobic,” which was seemingly framed to elicit the kind of chatter that followed. The tone of the story almost came from a snarky place but that’s hard to prove. Take...
