Flux Pavilion Teases Third Album: “It’s All About the Drops”

In the wake of his stunning sophomore album and the birth of his first child, it seems Flux Pavilion is as inspired as ever. After the release of his scintillating .wav LP in January 2021, the electronic music vet announced less than a month later that he was writing its successor, tentatively titled .wav pt2. The iconic “I Can’t Stop” producer, who is also in the process of writing his first-ever ambient record, has now taken to Twitter to tease the highly anticipated album—and fans can expect a heavyweight. “Remember this day when my next album comes out,” he tweeted yesterday, December 6th. “Today is the day I discovered its sound. And it’s all about the drops.” The statement comes as a bit of a surprise after the dubstep ic...

Kill Paris’ Upcoming Album Will Mark End of an Era, Dawn of New Musical Alias

It’s a bittersweet day for fans of Kill Paris.  As the electronic music vet’s forthcoming new album Beginning Again nears its release, so too does the end of the line for his Kill Paris alias. Penning a short reflection on social media, Paris recapped the past 15 years of his illustrious career. “There have been ups and downs,” he wrote. “From begging venues to let me play for free…all the way to playing to a sold out crowd at Red Rocks. I’m extraordinarily lucky.” But while he’s persisted through thick and thin, he stated that he’s creatively found himself out of alignment with the alias in more recent times. “All things must change, as must I,” he added, “and my values, goals, and sound are evolv...

Bright Eyes Announce 2022 Tour Dates

After hitting the road (for the first time in over a decade) in support of last year’s Down in the Weeds, Where the World Once Was this summer, Bright Eyes are heading back out on tour in March. The trio of Conor Oberst, Mike Mogis and Nathaniel Walcott just put out a baker’s dozen dates throughout the midwest, southeast, and east coast, ending in Virginia on April 10. While the spring tour happens to include Cassadaga‘s 15th birthday and no stops in New York or anywhere on the west coast, perhaps the rest of us can hold out hope for the unlikely event that Oberst and company will do something to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Lifted or The Story Is in the Soil, Keep Your Ear to the Ground in August. After all, they’re reissuing some of their catalog through Dead Oceans in 2022, so...

I Guess We’re Done: Kevin Whelan Looks to the Future With Aeon Station

The guy I remember from an album that boasted of being a 30-something “best 17-year old ever” making about $13,000 a year greets me showered and blue-blazered, sporting a white oxford and an equally bright smile. Kevin Whelan calls his Zoom profile picture his “LinkedIn look,” and it betrays an unexpected quirk of a Google search I conducted just prior to my conversation with the Aeon Station frontman: “Kevin Whelan Johnson and Johnson” pops up ahead of “Kevin Whelan Wrens.” Whelan’s official job title is Global Head of R&D Strategic Initiatives and Operations, and he manages about 400 employees. Since 2003, it’s been far more likely that Whelan could give someone a job than a new Wrens song. More disturbing is that the third entry is “Kevin Whelan Obituary.” “Work, rock and then death...

Mitski Releases Latest Single ‘Heat Lightning’

Mitski unveiled the latest single from Laurel Hell in the form of “Heat Lightning.” The brooding song is three minutes of the artist ruminating about the perils of insomnia (we’ve all been there before). “Heat Lightning” was originally written by Mitski on piano, where she sings “And there’s nothing I can do // Not much I can change // Can I give it up to you / Would that be okay? / There’s nothing I can do / Not much I can change // I give it up to you / I surrender.” The animated video for “Heat Lightning” was created by Alex Moy. [embedded content][embedded content] Describing Laurel Hell in a release, Mitski said that she “needed songs that could help me forgive both others and myself…I needed to create this space mostly for myself where I sat in that gray area.” Mitski wrote...

Top 50 Albums of 2021

Our 2021 Annual Report continues with our Top 50 Albums list. As the year winds down, stay tuned for more awards, lists, and articles about the best music, film, and TV of 2021. You can find it all in one place here. We’re all friends here, so let’s be honest: Most playlists are boring. Corporation-curated playlists are boring, influencer playlists are boring, and the playlist you made for your high school crush became boring the moment you liked someone new. We use them at times — road tripping, studying, or working out — for a pleasant background vibe. But when it comes to prolonged active listening, only an album can demand your full attention. Advertisement That was especially true in 2021. Many workers returned to the office, even as the COVID-19 pandemic continued to teach us new let...
