JAY-Z Surpasses Quincy Jones as Artist with Most Grammy Nominations

JAY-Z has set a new Grammys record, passing pioneering producer and composer Quincy Jones for most nominations in the history of the awards. He earned three nominations for the 2022 ceremony, pushing his total to 83. Previously tied with Jones at 80 nominations, the Brooklyn rapper added to his total thanks to collaborations with DMX (“Bath Salts”) and Kanye West (“Jail”), both of which are up for Best Rap Song. Thanks to the latter guest appearance, Jay earned an additional nod as part of Donda’s Album of the Year nomination. Thus far, he has collected 23 Grammys. Paul McCartney kept pace as the runner-up for most Grammy nominations, picking up a pair of nods in the Best Rock Song and Best Rock Album categories. He was previously tied for second place with Jay-Z’s arguably more famous wif...

Grammys 2022 Nominations: As Usual, The Best New Artist Category Is a Head-Scratching One

The Recording Academy, aka the voting body responsible for the Grammy Awards, has been vocal this past year about the internal work of growth and change. They are trying to put on a new face — one that’s more inclusive, one that is more equitable, and one with more voices in the room. They did away with nomination committees, an antiquated system that filtered final say for nominations. With that in mind, many expected the 2022 Grammy Nominations to look a bit different — or at least a little different from past years. At the end of the day, though, the more some things change, the more they stay the same. The Grammys seem to be one of those things, but their Best New Artist category is especially confusing. Best New Artist is, consistently, a pretty baffling category. Maybe the best way t...

Claudia Lennear, The Inspiration Behind ‘Brown Sugar,’ Regrets Song Leaving Rolling Stones’ Live Set

Claudia Lennear has been a witness to some peak moments in rock and soul. First as a member of the Ike & Tina Turner Revue, she’s sung backup on classic recordings and toured the world, shared stages with former Beatles and Bob Dylan, and was the inspiration behind David Bowie’s torrid 1972 epic “Lady Grinning Soul.” Just as famously, Lennear has been widely credited as the inspiration behind the Rolling Stones’ increasingly controversial classic rocker “Brown Sugar.” Founding bassist Bill Wyman confirmed her role in one of his books, and she’s always taken pride in that, calling the track “one of the greatest rock songs of all time, and not because I had anything to do with it.” Lennear was still an Ikette when she dated Stones frontman Mick Jagger in 1969, the same period the song wa...

Grammys Nominations 2022: Kanye West Gets Surprise Nom, Jon Batiste Leads With 11

The list of Grammys nominations is here and Jon Baptiste leads all nominees with 11 total nominations. Last year, Beyoncé led all nominees with nine total. Justin Bieber, Doja Cat, and H.E.R. have eight nominations while Billie Eilish and Olivia Rodrigo picked up seven apiece. The biggest surprise is that Ye — the artist formerly known as Kanye West — picked up an Album of the Year nomination for Donda. The album, which was recently released as a deluxe edition, controversially features two of the year’s most disgraced musicians, Marilyn Manson and DaBaby. The Best Rock Album nominees will make classic rock fans happy, with AC/DC’s Power Up, Black Pumas’ live album Live From Studio A Red, Chris Cornell’s posthumous No One Sings Like You Anymore, Foo Fighters’ Medicine at Midnight, and...

SYSTEM OF A DOWN Drummer Rails Against Los Angeles’s Vaccine Mandate: ‘Self-Imposed Tyranny And Mental Slavery Is Rampant’

SYSTEM OF A DOWN drummer John Dolmayan has blasted Los Angeles’s vaccine mandate, saying it’s akin to “self-imposed tyranny and mental slavery.” Angelenos visiting restaurants, movie theaters, malls, salons and several other venues in Los Angeles have to show proof of COVID-19 vaccination or a negative virus test to enter. SafePassLA ordinance is one of the strictest mandates of its kind in the nation, and includes all individuals eligible for a COVID vaccine. It means that vaccine verification is needed at many more locations within the city’s limits than in surrounding areas. Under the ordinance, which was approved by the L.A. City Council in early October, patrons age 12 and older have to show either: * A physical vaccination card from the Centers for Disea...
