Adele Wonders What’s Next on Powerful 30

No artist deserves to be defined by their romantic failures, least of all Adele, whose catalog has provided solace to leagues of lovelorn listeners over the past decade-plus — a generational voice worth wailing along to on our lowest days. So in 10, 25 and 50 years, when anniversary retrospectives are written about the star’s excellent new album 30, may it not be unjustly labeled as her “divorce album.” Because it’s not a divorce album. It’s an identity album. Adele’s fourth LP, out Friday, is largely informed by her 2019 split from her entrepreneur ex-husband Simon Konecki after a seven-year relationship. But 30 does not dare to wallow long in “woe is me” melancholy. Instead, Adele poses a much more constructive inquiry: Who am I now? Her marriage is over, the family she spent a decade nu...

Moore Kismet Ties a Bow On Breakout Year With Stunning Single, “Call Of The Unicorn”

In what has been a prolific year for Moore Kismet, somehow they have saved their best for last. Today they dropped their last release of 2021, a stunning single dubbed “Call Of The Unicorn.” Kismet, who recently made history as the youngest artist to ever perform at Chicago’s iconic Lollapalooza festival, produced the track when they were 14 years old. Now 16, the electronic music wunderkind is preparing to release their debut album by unveiling one of its most anticipated singles. There is perhaps no one in the dance music scene more adept at blending the banger with the ballad—a notion reinforced by the hypnotic cadence of the song’s verses and screeching sound design of its drops. And with a stentorian topline from Tasha Baxter at its bedrock, “Ca...

Manila Killa and San Holo Unveil Heavenly Collaboration, “Mean It”

An intricate song originally written and produced in right before the pandemic, “Mean It“ represents a monumental release for both Manila Killa and San Holo. While Holo is still buzzing off the June 2021 release of his sophomore album bb u ok?—with “Mean It“ marking his first single ever since—Manila Killa has had a relatively quiet year so far. Throughout the past 12 months he was enlisted to offer his remix expertise to the likes of Petit Biscuit, juuku and Kasbo, and “Mean It” marks his first original single since last year’s “Closer 2 U“ alongside Slow Magic. Bringing a heavenly indie-pop sonic aesthetic to the table, “Mean It” masterfully combines the two producers’ respective styles into a cohesive mix. While Nick Lopez’s vocals set the tone and tell a story of coping with loss and i...

Kavinsky Speeds Out of the Grave With “Renegade,” His First New Music In 8 Years

His enemies thought they’ve seen the last of him, but once again, Kavinsky has risen from the grave. The first single from the renowned French producer’s long-awaited album is finally here. After waiting more than eight years, Kavinsky has unveiled “Renegade,” a collaboration with Cautious Clay and Victor Le Masne and Gaspard Augé of Justice.  Showing no signs of rust picked up during his long slumber, he’s delivered another Kavinsky classic. To help detail the pieces of the story that can’t be displayed through his dazzling, retro-inspired sound, Kavinsky released an action-packed music video soundtracked by “Renegade.”  Standing atop a high-rise in the big city, like a superhero, Kavinsky surveys...

Bop Shop: Songs From Adele, Jockstrap, Cazwell, Rosalía, And More

“Hold On” is the 10th track on 30, an album that feels nostalgic but not recycled, fresh, and inherently Adele. When this song begins, everything goes dark. Yet as the singer’s powerful, lachrymose voice echoes the title, a beacon of light draws you back to hope, grounding you. “Let time be patient / Let pain be gracious,” she sings as a manifestation for her own struggles and her listeners’. At the bridge — “Sometimes loneliness is the only rest we get / And the emptiness actually lets us forget / Sometimes forgiveness is easiness in secret” — things come into focus with simple, profound wisdom until Adele’s trademark crescendo. Although heartbreaking, what’s so hopeful about this masterful collection is that you can see the artist on the other side of her pain. She recently told Op...

Chuck D Calls Out Live Nation For ‘Cashing In On Black Pain, Trauma, And Death’

Chuck D just issued an open letter calling on the entire Live Nation team “To step up and step out of the shadows to fix these situations and save lives,” following the tragedy that took place at Travis Scott’s Astroworld Festival over the first weekend of November. Chuck D The Public Enemy rapper writes that Travis Scott is not to blame for the ten concertgoers that died as a result of injuries from the festival. Writing that Scott had nothing to do with the physical set-up of the festival and logistics, he “trust Live Nation and all the other concert promoters who are supposed to do all of this.” Chuck D explains he is tired of the concert corporation’s negligence of the Astroworld tragedy, and that people want answers about what went wrong at Astroworld. “I’m not buying the Young B...

Sam Fender Vs. The World

“I think a lot of people try to force positivity out of it. Quite frankly, I thought it was horrible,” Sam Fender says when asked about the time he spent alone during lockdown. Sure, those months proved to be fertile ground for the self-examination threading together his second album Seventeen Going Under, but he’s not suggesting all of his time was spent on introspection and inspired songwriting. In fact, at one point during our video call, he clearly differentiates himself from people who walked out of lockdown claiming they’d survived on “quinoa the whole time,” jokingly retorting “Fuck off, no you didn’t. I ate chicken burgers, drank loads of beer, and took loads of drugs.” But all quips aside, shit was bad. “It fucked up a lot of people’s lives and a lot of people’s mental health. I s...
