HipHopWired Featured Video Source: Sole Collector / Complex Being a sneakerhead (not to be confused with a sneaker reseller) can at times be a headache and heartbreaking one way or another. The LOX rapper Styles P‘s experience with the sneaker culture has been no different. In an interview with Full Size Run podcast, Styles Pinero went into detail about how sneaker collecting not only influenced his street life, but also went into the various aspects of the sneaker culture and how it ruined his life. Besides the occasional lab experiment, you typically won’t find anything interesting in science class unless you want to grow up to be—well—a scientist. But when Zach Montoya and Brayden James found each other, it was instant chemistry. Connecting over a shared interest in music production, the duo launched their collaborative syence moniker after meeting in a college science class. Like the molecules and ions they studied, they formed a strong bond, eventually concocting their most potent compound yet: a five-track EP called bass pop. bass pop is not only a breakthrough for the duo, but also a showcase of a new genre, the EP’s namesake. Its goal is to encapsulate a new sound “that many may have never heard before,” according to syence. The five-track record, w...
EDM is for the birds. At least that’s the case for Canadian electronic music producer Hudson Lee, whose latest single “Flock Call,” a collaboration with Frequent, samples the voice of his pet cockatiel, Bijou. What’s next, a whole zoo? Bijou’s chirps can be heard amongst a host of distorted bass and spacey synths in “Flock Call.” Wildly experimental—literally—the song manages to weave together hypnotic sound design and biomusic elements as if it was recorded underwater. Coming in at a lengthy six minutes, “Flock Call” represents just a fraction of the adventures Bijou has in store with Lee. With a potential lifespan of 25 years, there’s no telling what this father-feather duo will come up with next. Recommended Ar...

In 2014, Lil Wayne famously told ESPN Magazine that, “Athletes want to be rappers, rappers want to be athletes.” Though primarily known in the hip-hop realm, the rapper and lifelong basketball player Rapsody is the embodiment of both, having cultivated an appreciation for music and sports growing up in North Carolina. She has gained notoriety by combining elements from both worlds into her output, whether it’s her music, videos or style. Look no further than her first EP, titled The Black Mamba. With this, she not only pays tribute to Kobe Bryant’s signature Mamba Mentality, but also applies that mindset to the various projects she’s created with the NBA, NBPA, WNBA, and some of her favorite players in the league. The blending of these two worlds injects a freshness to her work, also earni...
RATING: 7/10 The modern-day incarnation of EXODUS have not been practitioners of the theory that less is more. There’s a very strong chance that if a riff was generated by guitarists Gary Holt and Lee Altus during the writing and recording of a new album, it makes it to the final product, whether it be the ambitious 70-minutes-plus bombardment of the “The Atrocity Exhibition…” records from the millennium’s first decade, or 2014’s “Blood In, Blood Out”, which saw the triumphant return of Steve “Zetro” Souza to the vocalist position in a well-received marriage of the band’s old-school ethos and modern-era songwriting. For the first time in many years though, the group’s plentiful outpouring of metallic bludgeoning feels more e...
