A Day in the Life of…Wrabel

“It was pretty immediate for me…” says singer-songwriter Wrabel, of when he knew he wanted a career in music, having started playing piano and writing songs in his late teens. “Once I started writing, I knew this is what I wanted to do forever.” Along with Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennett, he notes his Great Uncle Carl as one of his earliest influences: “My Great Uncle Carl had an incredible voice. He truly could’ve been up there with them, but never followed singing as a career path. He recorded songs as a hobby and shared them with friends and family, so I still to this day have hundreds of his songs on a hard drive. We’d listen to him every morning on the way to school.” With a long collaborative resume that includes Kesha, P!nk, Marshmello, and Backstreet Boys, Wrabel released his long-a...

With Here and Now, Gates Return From the Almost Dead

Being told you’re cancer-free should be cause for joyous celebration. But Gates vocalist/guitarist Kevin Dye was also struck by a more negative reaction when told an operation to remove a cancerous growth on his lungs was completely successful. It sent him into a deep spiral of existential depression. He’d first noticed something was wrong in April and May 2018, when he noticed he was repeatedly getting pneumonia. After numerous trips to the doctor, tests determined he had cancer. About a month later, it had been completely removed with an operation. Dye was obviously relieved, but there was a lingering darkness inside him — a sense of despair and despondency he just couldn’t shake. Much as he tried, much as he knew he should be elated, he wasn’t. “I’m the kind of person who thinks about t...

Big Sean and Hit-Boy have teamed up once again to create a music video for “The One.” The single comes off of the duo’s new EP, What You Expect, which debuted late last month. While October’s elaborate “What a Life” video Big Sean covered head-to-toe in live bees, this new visual directs attention back to the music and the duo’s long-standing partnership. The two have worked together a handful of times over the years since first linking on the Kanye West song “Clique” in 2012. Filmed in black and white, “The One” takes viewers inside a recording booth cast among the trees, where Big Sean and Hit-Boy jam out while making a new track, before cutting to the two on a scenic hilltop. “Mountaintop views where the inspiration spews,” Big Sean raps. “Sometimes when you lose that’s when innovation ...

Nation of Language Face the Future With A Way Forward

There was a slight air of apprehension as hundreds of masked fans packed into the Lodge Room, a gorgeous 1920s Italian Renaissance Revival-style venue in a former Masonic Lodge in the Highland Park neighborhood of Los Angeles. It’s a warm, inviting space, complete with cherry wood paneling, hand-painted murals featuring scenes of ancient Egypt, and a huge golden pentagram on the ceiling. But, it was clear that at least a few folks in the crowd were still getting used to being out at shows again. A long-haired man at the bar slathered his hands with sanitizer before double fisting Jack and Cokes. A hipster couple had a muffled argument about where to safely stand and still see the stage. A fashionable woman with fogged glasses stumbled into the VIP area. They’d all come to see Nation of Lan...
