Earlier this year SG Lewis was enjoying a drink in his parents’ living room, celebrating the release of his debut album, times. Its 10 tracks practically bubble over with euphoric sound design and dance-pop spirit, both made for and inspired by the clubs we so sorely missed. But as they say, all good things take time. The renowned Brit’s long-awaited performance of times in Los Angeles was well worth the wait. Complete with live vocals, keys and guitar from Lewis, JAB provided support on percussion alongside Victoria Aycock on keys and bass. SG Lewis performs alongside JAB and Victoria Aycock for a sold out show at Los Angeles’ Shrine Auditorium and Expo Hall. According to Reuters, a copyright infringement lawsuit over NIRVANA‘s use of a C.W. Scott-Giles illustration from a 1949 English translation of Dante‘s “Inferno” on merchandise has been dismissed. “Inferno” is the first part of Italian writer Dante Alighieri‘s 14th-century epic poem “Divine Comedy”. On Thursday (October 21), U.S. District Judge Dale Fischer dismissed the case and said the United Kingdom was a more appropriate jurisdiction for the copyright claims brought by British citizen Jocelyn Bundy over the pioneering grunge rockers’ alleged use of her grandfather’s British art. The judge made the dismissal contingent on NIRVANA agreeing to U.K. jurisdiction if Bundy sued there. Last April, Bundy sued Nirvana LLC, Live ...
Yngwie Malmsteen has once again praised Eddie Van Halen, saying the legendary VAN HALEN guitarist “changed everything.” The 58-year-old Swedish axeman, who is promoting his latest album, “Parabellum”, discussed Eddie‘s impact on guitar playing during a live YouTube chat with fans on Thursday (October 21). He said (as transcribed by BLABBERMOUTH.NET): “What can you say about Eddie? I mean, he changed everything. I had already been playing for a while when I heard him. And it was a complete, like, it was, like, ‘Wow!’ The whole band, when it came out — the first [VAN HALEN] album. Everybody I knew would hack up their Strats and put humbuckers and start tapping and stuff like this. I didn’t wanna do that, because that’s Eddie and let...
Rufus Publications and Ross Halfin have announced a new limited-edition book, “The Black Crowes”, featuring thousands of unseen images from Ross‘s extensive library. Produced alongside Chris and Rich Robinson, the book is a huge photographic essay on the band, formed in Marietta, Georgia in 1984. The book features introductions from both brothers. Chris writes in the book: “To say that THE BLACK CROWES & Mr. Halfin have a long history together is most definitely an understatement. Here in these photographs you will see & feel.” Ross comments: “Could I tell you stories about this band? I could probably tell you a hundred, and one of the highlights was seeing them opening for THE ROLLING STONES at Wembley Stadium and whilst doing an hour’s se...
Khalid dropped off a new single, “Present,” set to land on his upcoming mixtape, dubbed Scenic Drive, out December 3 via Right Hand Music Group/RCA Records. The new track enlists a deep R&B sound with smooth guitar strums, light synths and a strong drum beat. “I know that you’re on to me, baby/Tell me that you want me, baby,” the 23-year-old artist sings in the first verse. “Really need your company, baby/If it’s alright, you can ruin me, baby.” “I’ve had the chance to listen to a lot of music and also push myself creatively while I’m recording,” Khalid said in a press release. “My Mom raised me on R&B and whether it’s the harmonies or melodies, it will always be a part of my music. ‘Present’ is just the beginning and I love that it has a dual meaning. It feels good to be more ‘pre...
Coldplay ft. Selena Gomez: “Let Somebody Go” A few years ago, a collaboration between Coldplay and Selena Gomez would’ve seemed unimaginable. But on the British rock group’s ninth album Music of the Spheres, they’ve ventured even further out of their comfort zone, working with the likes of Max Martin, BTS, Jacob Collier, and the “Lose You to Love Me” singer. Their joint offering feels celestial, if not also somber, as Gomez and singer Chris Martin swap verses about an inevitable and hopeless heartbreak. “When I called the mathematicians / And I asked them to explain / They said love is only equal to the pain,” Selena sings, her breathy vocals complementing Martin’s raspy tone quite nicely, sounding like a heavenly reprieve from hurt until they build into a “Fix You”-esque explosion. —Carso...
Like a twisted game of limbo, songwriters and artists are constantly asked to go lower and lower, and only the streaming companies win. As Billboard reports, on October 21st, several major streamers filed to the US Copyright Royalty Board (CRB) proposing royalty rates for 2023-2027. Three of the biggest platforms — Spotify, Amazon, and Pandora — are recommending a significant reduction in royalty rates over the 2018–2022 period. These upcoming four years, 2023-2027, are known as CRB Phonorecords IV, denoting the fourth period of rate determination. It follows Phonorecords I for 2008–2012, Phonorecords II from 2013–2017, and Phonorecords III from 2018-2022. Phonorecords III represented an increase over the previous two periods, escalating over time and culminating in a r...
