Blue has always been Lana Del Rey’s color. Since her 2012 debut Born to Die, it’s been the singer’s blanket descriptor for the literal (jeans, pills, skies and oceans) and the emotive: serenity, joy, melancholy and vulnerability. On Blue Banisters, Del Rey’s candid and captivating eighth studio LP — and her second album in seven months — the color is again omnipresent as it brushes broken promises and rebirth across the 36-year-old songwriter’s sullen heart. “Said he’d fix my weathervane, give me children, take away my pain / And paint my banisters blue,” Del Rey laments through the wistful title track, referencing her 2020 split from Tulsa, Oklahoma cop and LivePD reality TV star Sean Larkin. However, Banisters isn’t a breakup record. It’s an observational project, perhaps Del Rey’s most ...
Dave Gahan of Depeche Mode shared another cover off his upcoming record, Imposter, taking on the beautiful, classic James Carr track “The Dark End of the Street.” The tune that was supposed to turn James Carr into the next Otis Redding in 1967, “The Dark End of the Street” has been covered by various artists over the decades, including the Flying Burrito Brothers, Lee Hazelwood and Ann Margret, Dolly Parton, and Cat Power, among others. [embedded content][embedded content] Longtime collaborator Rich Machin, a.k.a. Soulsavers, joined Gahan in recording Imposter. The duo has refurbished iconic tracks by PJ Harvey, Jeff Buckley, Neil Young, and Bob Dylan for the record. Imposter is set to arrive November 12. “When I listen to other people’s voices and songs—more importantly the...
Insane Clown Posse dropped their newest hard-hitting spooky single “Wretched,” just in time for Halloween. The song is featured on their upcoming record Yum Yum Bedlam, which is out on October 31 via their own Psychopathic Records. [embedded content][embedded content] For a malicious play at cynical people, the group raps: “If I come close enough of miss / I’ll suck you dry of happiness,” and leads into the chorus pointing out a worldly emptiness, “To shower you when demon piss … No holiness no hope exists.” In an interview with Rolling Stone, Violent J said of the track: “I was inspired to write ‘Wretched,’ because, put it this way, There’s Hollywood insanity, like the Riddler, where it’s almost cool, or Hannibal Lecter, or Michael Myers. And then there’s the type of insanity th...

Elton John, The Lockdown Sessions After becoming one of the world’s most iconic pop stars, Sir Elton John could have easily rested on his laurels. Instead, the 74-year-old icon decided too go about one of his more ambitious projects to date with a new album of collaborations, The Lockdown Sessions. Filled to the brim with his various partnerships over the last year, Lockdown features John dipping his toe in a little bit of everything, from pure pop nostalgia (“Cold Heart” with Dua Lipa & PNAU) to soul (“Finish Line” with Stevie Wonder) to hip-hop (“Always Love You” with Young Thug & Nicki Minaj ) to Americana (“Simple Things” with Brandi Carlile). Pvris, “My Way” “Turn the days into nights/ ...
“The way this came up, we did have a bunch of long conversations together and I always say when I first met Bruce, he seemed like…surprisingly shy considering he goes out there and sings before tens of thousands of people for hours at a time,” the former president explained. “We just ended up being in settings where we’d these long conversations and I thought, the things we’re talking about — what does it mean to be a man, what does it mean to be a American — these were the things that were popping up over a meal, and I thought, ‘You know what? This might be something that would be useful for folks to hear.'” “I initially though that he had gotten the wrong number when he called me. And I said, ‘Okay, let me figure thi...
Though Harlow talked about how his early music, including breakthrough 2020 hit “Whats Poppin’,” were about baring his soul — but also about going from “just talking s–t” to exploring his life more deeply — there are still some things about that song he doesn’t like. “I am always noticing lines I could improve,” he said about taking a page from Ye. “But I think people appreciate truth and I think when you have guys like Kanye and songs like ‘All Falls Down’ and being that vulnerable… It changed so many people’s lives. As opposed to ‘Here’s why I am the s–t,’ it’s ‘Here’s why I am not the s–t.’” Harlow also got candid about how the music industry has gotten more progressive in recent years, including Lil Nas...
“It’s been not the normal kind of fun, frolicking tour experience, you know?” James tells Billboard. “It’s just kind of a keep-it-real-tight COVID bubble, but the shows have been great.” My Morning Jacket’s return to performing after a four-year hiatus — and 18 months where we’ve all been tucked away at home — has been like sonic manna for the group’s dedicated (bordering on devotional) fanbase. For the beloved Kentucky-bred band, touring during the lingering pandemic is just another variation of the many flavors of solitude that have defined the most recent era of the My Morning Jacket mythology. But despite this isolation, and also because of it, the group has delivered its ninth studio album, an excellent, eponymous ...
Elton John has dropped off his latest album, The Lockdown Sessions. As the title suggests, the 16-track record was recorded remotely over the past 18 months. The Lockdown Sessions boasts an array of collaborative songs with more than 20 artists, including Young Thug and Nicki Minaj (“Always Love You”), Lil Nas X (“One of Me”), Dua Lipa (“Cold Heart”), 6lack and Gorillaz (“The Pink Phantom”), Charlie Puth (“After All”) and several others. “The last thing I expected to do during lockdown was make an album,” John wrote on Instagram. “But, as the pandemic went on, one‐off projects kept cropping up and I’ve ended with a selection of really interesting and diverse stuff that was completely different to anything I’m known for, stuff that took me out of my comfort zone into completely new ter...
