I still remember the first time I saw Mulholland Drive, which celebrates its twentieth anniversary this week. It was in the spring of 2005, and I was in my freshman year of college at the University of Iowa. An English lit major with an interest in writing about movies, I’d signed up for an Introduction to Cinema course that was required to pursue a film studies minor. A lot of the films we’d watched so far — Weerasethakul’s Mysterious Object at Noon, Tarkovsky’s The Sacrifice — had left me, a curious but sheltered eighteen-year-old, somewhat cold. But there was an expectant buzz in the air when I settled in for that day’s screening: the film we’d watch today would have boobs in it. I knew who David Lynch was, but had only seen The Elephant Man, not the most representative film of his care...
I spy with my little eye…a new Courtney Barnett single! Today, the indie rock singer unveiled “Smile Real Nice,” the theme song for Apple TV+’s new animated adaptation of Harriet the Spy. On the defiant track, Barnett croons, “I don’t wanna be/ You don’t wanna be/ We don’t wanna be/ Told what to do/ No, I won’t cut my hair/ And I’ll wear whatever I like/ It when I get to be myself” over raucous drums and dueling electric guitars. As mentioned, “Smile Real Nice” serves as the opening theme for Harriet the Spy, which is set to premiere on Apple’s streaming service on November 19th. An illustrated update on the 1964 children’s novel by Louise Fitzhugh, the series stars Beanie Feldstein as the voice of the titular spy alongside Jane Lynch as Ole Golly and Lacey Chabert as Marion Hawthorne.&nbs...

Former NIGHTWISH frontwoman Anette Olzon spoke to CNN about balancing her singing career with her day job. “I always wanted to help people and work with something that gives me something on the inside,” she said (as transcribed by BLABBERMOUTH.NET). “I’m a registered nurse. So I started studying and got a bachelor’s degree. It took me some years. And I’ve been working with that for three years now. And I feel that it’s a good complement — it’s a good complement to do music and to do another work. I believe it’s good for us to see other things. I’m working with newborn babies at the maternity ward, so it’s really a very nice job.” The Swedish-born singer originally joined NIGHTWISH in 2007 and recorded two studio LPs wi...

RATING: 8/10 As long as there are exciting new bands to fly the flag, heavy metal will never get old. LUTHARO obviously subscribe to a similar view: the Canadians’ self-released debut album is a primarily traditional metal record with bags of melody, shitloads of muscular power and large amounts of virtuoso musicianship. But it’s also a ferociously contemporary affair, with shades of everything from progressive and symphonic metal grandeur to the heads-down clatter of the heaviest metalcore and the giddy, razor-wire histrionics of CHILDREN OF BODOM. The whole, seemingly intuitive caboodle is wrapped up in some truly memorable songs and blessed with a classy production that belies the band’s DIY status. An opening salvo that kicks in with such ferocity that you may spit yo...

For MGK’s turn, he also led with the tattoo question, which Fox was unable to answer. “It’s literally impossible to calculate because you tattooed on top of your tattoos, so I couldn’t say,” she responded. Fox was later able to provide an extremely detailed account when MGK asked her what his astrological sign is, and told him, “Your sun is Taurus, your moon is Pisces, your rising is Gemini. You have a stellium of planets in Pisces. You’re sun is in the 12th house, which is the house that’s ruled by Neptune, which is the ruler of Pisces. You’re very Piscean and you’re very Gemini, very morose and the moods are very intense.” During the game, Fox also revealed that she has listened to Machine Gun Kelly’s upcoming sixth ...
