Initially, the 32-year-old artist was part of the Gino Y Royce duo, where he started writing his own songs to the sound of reggaeton but he quickly transitioned into a solo artist as he released his first album, which cost Royce — who was in college and working at a cell phone store — $8,000 to make. “I did not know I was making something special but it felt special.” After meeting with Sergio George, who then signed Royce to Top Stop Music (Royce is no longer signed to that label), he recorded “Corazón Sin Cara” and “it flopped,” says Royce. So they decided on recording Ben E. King‘s “Stand By Me” as a cover with additional Spanish lyrics and as a bachata. “I’m like ‘yo, I think this is wack’ not bec...

Tangana & Nathy Peluso, “Ateo” (Sony Music España) An ode to bachata, which C. Tangana first explored on “Tu Me Dejaste de Querer,” the Spanish rapper now teams up with Nathy Peluso for another bachata-fused track titled “Ateo.” The genre-smashing artists first set the tone for the single’s release with a provocative teaser showcasing their bachata skills that stirred up some controversy. Piggybacking off the ads, the Democratic Party of Virginia started selling hats, mugs and buttons with the phrase “Swifties Against Youngkin” emblazoned on them in magenta writing, as reported by Washingtonian magazine on Thursday. A screenshot of the merch was tweeted Friday (Oct. 8) by Mediate reporter Katherine Higgins. There’s no word yet why the merch was pulled, but back in February 2017, Swift filed a series of trademarks for the word “Swifties” — the nickname for her fanbase. Swift’s spokeswoman has not responded to requests to comment about the singer/songwriter’s unwitting involvement in the Virginia gubernatorial race. In a statement to Billboard about McAuliffe’s Swiftie-targeting ad campaign, Democratic Party of Virginia sp...

Can you hear what The Rock is rapping? Dwayne Johnson spits bars on “Face Off,” the new song from prolific Kansas City MC Tech N9ne. The track appears on ASIN9NE, Tech N9ne’s 23rd studio set which dropped today, October 8th. The song is a swirling fight anthem, with a hook by Krizz Kaliko that recalls The Rock’s wrestling days: “Rumble/ They gon’ take your face off/ They gon’ rumble/ They gon’ take your face off.” Compared to Tech N9ne’s machine gun flow, Johnson brought a more stately pace to his guest verse. “Black and Samoan in my veins,” he raps, “My culture bangin’ with Strange/ I change the game so what’s my motherfuckin’ name? (Rock!).” The track ends with a Johnson outro, as he thanks “brother Tech N9ne,” as well as his tequila sponsor Teremana, and brags, “One take,...
