By 1991, Soundgarden had reached a crossroads. All around them, things seemed to be in a state of flux. The Cold War had finally reached its decades-long denouement with the dismantling of the Berlin Wall, just as a new, hot one was about to kick off in the Persian Gulf. Hip hop was emerging as a dominant new genre, while hair metal was enjoying the last few flickers of its cultural relevance. And, after several years operating within the indie underground scene around Seattle, releasing cult-favorite records for Sub Pop and SST, Soundgarden were now major label operators, with major label pressures and major label headaches. “That’s probably one of the most tumultuous times in the band’s career,” the group’s guitarist, Kim Thayil, admitted. “There were struggles there, but creatively it p...
In 2009, shortly after an ambulance arrived at her Los Angeles home, Brittany Murphy died of what the coroner said was pneumonia. Pneumonia is a serious illness, but it isn’t usually fatal for 32-year-olds, and can often be easily treated at the hospital, so questions have swirled ever since. The upcoming HBO Max documentary What Happened, Brittany Murphy? seeks to figure out just that: What happened? And in the first trailer, the strange behavior of her husband Simon Monjack casts a long shadow. “Simon took her away,” one interviewee notes in the preview. “He made sure no one could get to her.” We see footage of her life from as early as middle school, and track her progress from someone who was already skinny to a big star who had “lost an inordinate amount of weight.” The...

Former IRON MAIDEN frontman Blaze Bayley has offered a tantalizing glimpse into the band’s recording process in the 1990s, explaining that the British heavy metal legends made a conscious decision to drop one of the key elements of their distinctive sound ahead of his vocal debut on 1995’s “The X Factor”. Speaking to Eonmusic about his recent shows which have seen him playing a “MAIDEN years” set, Blaze said: The anniversary set was kind of my favorites and the ones I really enjoy doing — the ones that feel like old friends. And there’s a lot of great music on those albums, but I do everything in my own style.” Going on to explain that he and his bandmates have changed the way that they approach the tracks, the singer said: “I don’...

STAIND frontman Aaron Lewis has released the official music video for his controversial new solo single, “Am I The Only One”. Lewis sings in the song’s chorus: “I’m not the only one, willin’ to fight / For my love of the red and white / And the blue, burnin’ on the ground / Another statue comin’ down in a town near you.” Lewis also criticizes Bruce Springsteen at the end of the track, singing: “Am I the only one who quits singin’ along every time they play a Springsteen song.” This past July, Scott Borchetta, Big Machine Label Group‘...
