To say that Questlove has been busy is an understatement. Within the past year, the Roots drummer has debuted Summer of Soul, a thought-provoking feature documentary about the 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival, and has written a forthcoming book, Music is History, which chronicles the last fifty years of American music. Alongside that, he’s continued to hold his post as the musical director of The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. And with only a few days until his sixth book hits the shelves, the artist, whose real name is Ahmir Thompson, has already launched another project. In collaboration with handcrafted whiskey brand The Balvenie, later this month Questlove will premiere the first season of Quest for Craft, a YouTube video series that explores the relationship between craft and creati...

By Regina Kim At first glance, the futuristic music video for the South Korean foursome Aespa’s (styled all lowercase) breakout single “Black Mamba” may not seem that different from other K-pop visuals, with dynamic shots of explosive choreography and brightly colored costumes set against even brighter backgrounds. But about two-and-a-half minutes in, something shifts. As a girl stares wistfully at her reflection in a subway window, the reflection gazing back is not quite human. With cartoon eyes and long purple hair, she’s an animated doppelgänger, stretching her hand toward her human counterpart. With the release of this futuristic clip in November 2020, the girl group broke the record for the fastest debut track by any K-pop outfit to surpass 100 million views on YouTube, a f...
Of The Trees has unveiled his latest single “Windhorse,” marking the visceral bass storyteller’s first chapter of his forthcoming EP, Tale of Elegos, due out October 27th. Spun in a natural and hypnotic ethos, Tale Of Elegos will showcase a collection of five tracks of ambient, downtempo electronic records. In addition to “Windhorse” collaborator Sophie Marks, the EP will feature Kala and Mary Coso, expanding the Denver-based beatsmith’s unique sound. Opening with elements of biomusic like rustling leaves and chirping bird samples, a gentle flute melody chimes in and eventually builds into a tribal beat drop, where fuzzy basslines underscore Marks’ sultry lyrics. Rhythmic percussion and warm, distorted synths ebb and flow throughout before the arrangement fades into a coda inspi...

At 7 pm, when the majestic Red Rocks Amphitheatre, the legendary venue in Morrison, Colorado is glowing with the remaining light of day, the noticeably young audience for the triple-bill of Louis the Child, What So Not and Elderbrook is already throwing up in the aisles. Elderbrook, born Alex Kotz, is aware of the heightened energy of the waiting crowd, but it doesn’t interfere in his relaxed Zen state. He is sequestered in his cozy dressing room, which is outfitted like a high-end boutique hotel. There are quality snacks, designer bottled water and a chic bathroom. He shows off a brand-new tattoo on his inner wrist. It’s an acronym: WWPBD, which stands for “What Would Pooh Bear Do.” The tattoo is a reference to the wisdom of A.A. Milne’s beloved character. It’s a reminder for Kotz to ask ...
