“The time keeps ticking” until Netflix releases tick, tick…BOOM!, the highly-anticipated film adaptation of Rent composer Jonathan Larson’s autobiographical musical. The streamer has shared a new trailer for the forthcoming feature — which marks Lin-Manuel Miranda’s directorial debut — and it centers around Larson as he cuts his teeth in New York City as an aspiring playwright. Additionally, Netflix has also shared the soundtrack’s first single, “30/90.” tick, tick…BOOM! is slated to premiere in theaters November 12th, and will arrive on streaming November 19th. Todd Rundgren on Working with Kanye West, Skipping His Rock Hall Induction: “True Halls of Fame Are for Retirees and Dead People”

If you live in Maui, like Todd Rundgren does, you do not have to apologize for just chillin’ your way through the pandemic. Rundgren, though, has done anything but that. The veteran multi-hyphenate — producer of landmark albums for Meat Loaf, Grand Funk Railroad and others, as well as his own robust repertoire — has been characteristically hard at work and, save for being off the road, has not slowed down a great deal during the past 19 months. He even went “on tour” earlier this year with a series of virtual concerts, performed from Chicago and targeted to specific cities. Rundgren has also released four singles during the past year or so, slated for his next album, Space Force. That includes collaborations with Weezer’s Rivers Cuomo (“Down With the Ship”), Narcy (“Espionage”) and, most r...

NYFF Review: Joaquin Phoenix Gets Avuncular for the Warm, Low-Key C’mon C’mon

This review is part of our coverage of the 2021 New York Film Festival. The Pitch: Every five years or so, Mike Mills — not the one from R.E.M., though, confusingly, he is a music video director and graphic designer for some of their contemporaries — releases a sensitive, heartfelt drama about delicate but deceptively strong family ties. C’mon C’mon is the 2021 model, starring Joaquin Phoenix as a documentarian who must unexpectedly spend several weeks taking care of his nine-year-old nephew. I’ll Figure It Out: “Nobody knows what they’re doing. You just have to keep doing it.” That’s advice given late in C’mon C’mon by Viv (Gaby Hoffman) to her brother Johnny (Joaquin Phoenix) as he struggles to figure out how to substitute-parent her nine-year-old son Jesse (Woody Norman). Viv has been c...

Kacey Musgraves Becomes First Artist to Perform Naked on SNL

This past weekend, Kacey Musgraves served as the musical guest for Saturday Night Live’s Season 47 premiere. For her first performance of the evening, she played “justified” armed with an acoustic guitar and nothing else. It turns out she wasn’t just faking being nude, as many actors do to abide by FCC regulations, but rather she was completely naked and strategically positioned her body to get away with it — making her the first artist to ever do so on SNL. First of all, it’s important to clarify that Musgraves wasn’t ditching her outfit for no reason to promote Star-Crossed. While she was fully clothed for her rendition of “camera roll” on SNL, she opted to strip down for “justified” as a reference to the infamous Forrest Gump scene in which Jenny (played by Robin Wright) takes the stage...

Summer Walker Unveils Second Studio Album ‘Still Over It’

Shortly after teasing fans on social media, Summer Walker has officially announced her sophomore studio effort, Still Over It. Set to drop on November 5, the project was unveiled with an announcement that takes inspiration from flashback commercial skits. The visual offers a touch of nostalgia and reveals that Walker had been in communication with City Girls’ JT while she was incarcerated, and the pair wait to finally physically reunite and work on their collaboration. Walker also took to Instagram to curate “Summer’s Hard Drive,” a page that is “curated from the point of view of the album itself, allowing fans to freely fawn over the project in its infancy.” Watch the full teaser above. Summer Walker’s Still Over It drops November 5. Elsewhere in music, Billie Eilish is now the ...

‘Dissect’ Season Nine Analyzes Mac Miller’s ‘Swimming’ and ‘Circles’

The ninth season of the music analysis podcast Dissect is set to focus on Mac Miller‘s last two albums, Swimming and Circles. Creator and host Cole Cuchna will take a look at the life, trajectory and historical impact of Miller, as well as take an academic approach on Swimming and Circles with “insights, music theory, instrumentation, lyric interpretation to social contextual analysis.” “Two years in the making, it was an album that would stay true to the video central image of a man entrenched in his own psyche— observing, searching and scrutinizing,” Cuchna said in a statement. “It was an album that communicates a universal notion of seeking peace amidst the unrelenting currents of emotions. An album whose symbol is simple as water. The replenishing source of life that can easily pull yo...

HEART‘s Nancy Wilson has released “4 Edward With Love”, an extended version of her tribute to VAN HALEN guitarist Eddie Van Halen, “4 Edward”, from her debut solo album, “You And Me”. “You And Me” came out in May via Carry On Music. The LP was recorded primarily in Wilson‘s California home studio, working with band members and special guests remotely. Asked if she ever got to meet Eddie or tour with VAN HALEN, Nancy told Australian Musician: “Oh, yeah. We played with VAN HALEN a few times in the earlier ’80s mainly — at festivals and just gigs that we were opening for them. Those brothers, they were out of control — they were always out of control. They were the ones who we would end up in some bar in a hotel with. And...

TED NUGENT Calls Vaccinated People ‘Stupid’, Likens Them To Sheep (Video)

Ted Nugent has once again said that he won’t take the COVID-19 vaccine because the shots that are available in the United States were developed in less than a year are probably fake. Like antivaccine activists, talk show hosts, and far-right politicians, Ted — who spoke openly about his battle with COVID-19 six months ago — has made the vaccines’ “experimental” nature a talking point. During an October 1 appearance on “Off The Record”, a weekly coverage of Michigan’s governor’s office, the state legislature, the political campaign trail and state government, Ted said (as transcribed by BLABBERMOUTH.NET): “I actually think that the COVID-19 might be a weaponized virus created in Wuhan [China] by Barack Obama, Nancy Pelosi and [Doctor Ant...
