Depeche Mode’s Dave Gahan and Soulsavers Cover Neil Young, Bob Dylan, More on New Album Imposter

If you ask us, there’s been a huge boom of covers since March 2020.  Dave Gahan is throwing his hat into the ring with the forthcoming album Imposter, which will see the Depeche Mode singer reimagine twelve songs alongside his longtime musical partner Soulsavers — a.k.a. Rich Machin. The album, due out November 12th via Columbia, will include covers of well-loved classics like Neil Young’s “A Man Needs a Maid” and Bob Dylan’s “Not Dark Yet.” “When I listen to other people’s voices and songs — more importantly the way they sing them and interpret the words — I feel at home,” Gahan said in a statement. “I identify with it. It comforts me more than anything else. There’s not one performer on the record who I haven’t been moved by…I know we made something special, and I hope other people ...

Wale and J. Cole Return With High-Powered “Poke It Out” Music Video

After dropping their witty, electric track “Poke It Out” last week, D.C. rapper Wale and J.Cole have cooked up a music video filled with city-wide joyrides and lakeside bonfires. The single marks the first time that the duo has collaborated since their freestyle, “My Boy,” in 2018, which landed on Wale’s third EP Free Lunch. “Poke It Out” pays respect to Q-Tip‘s 1999 hit “Vivrant Thing” with a sample of the track’s signature electric bass. The song is slated to arrive on Wale’s seventh full-length effort, Folarin II, which follows 2019’s Wow… That’s Crazy. The upcoming record, which is scheduled to release on October 22 via Warner Records, will feature 16 tracks, including the rapper’s collaboration with Maxo Kream and Yella Beezy, “Down South.” Meanwhile, Cole recently anno...

Ivy Lab Release Forward-Thinking “Press Play” EP on Dirtybird White Label Series

Ivy Lab is in a lane of their own. When it comes to mixing hip-hop and bass music, no one does it quite like the London-based electronic duo. Last week, they went even further outside the lines with a brand new, forward-thinking EP titled Press Play, released on Dirtybird‘s White Label series. The EP is an evolution of Ivy Lab’s signature sounds, from their early days producing drum & bass to their more obscure, experimental sound. Press Play dives deep into their roots of producing obscure, cinematic, and unsettling electronic hip-hop. Eerie and kinetic, the record opens with its titular track, a sultry trap cut, before “BBQ,” a glitched-out halftime banger. Artwork for Ivy Lab’s “Press Play” EP. Recommended Articles The th...

Inside the Immersive North Coast Music Festival 2021

In describing the return of North Coast Music Festival, “out of this world” seems to be the prevailing ideology. And the correct one. Not only was the lineup for the fest’s 2021 edition primed to offer a special experience, but so were the venue and its production. From the “Chill Dome,” where you could relax and walk through immersive art installments; to the “Void,” a centrifuge of light and sound at the epicenter of the festival, the grounds were packed with entertainment to stretch the corners of the mind. Alive Coverage Day One was filled with overlapping schedules, but who could complain with such a stacked lineup? The Canopy was rocking with the sounds of Dirtybird’s finest, including the label’s co-founder, Claude VonStroke...

Hovvdy on ‘Good Vibes’ of New LP True Love: ‘We Threw Being Cryptic Out the Window’

“Lake June” is a precious little highlight on Hovvdy’s radiant fourth album, True Love — a lightfooted shuffle of barely more than a few strummed chords and brushed drums, before Will Taylor sings “I love you so much” in falsetto. It’s only fair to ask these guys where Young Thug fits into all of this. The duo of Taylor and Charlie Martin namedropped Thugger as a primary influence during the creative process of True Love, and they stayed true to their word. Sorta. Aside from the occasional smear of Autotune — and, befitting a band with two former drummers, the “slow bounce” — Hovvdy draws less from the unpredictable vocal modulations or linguistic invention of Young Thug than his uncanny creative energy. As Martin clarifies, “I feel compelled to turn up to ‘Lake June’ the sa...

Billie Eilish Speaks Out Against Texas Abortion Law: ‘Tell Them To Shut The Fuck Up!’

Billie Eilish is a headliner. As one of the biggest music artists in the world, when she speaks, she is heard. That typically happens on some of the biggest stages possible, too, and she took full advantage of her platform during her Austin City Limits Music Festival set over the weekend. In front of large projections that read “Bans Off Our Bodies,” Eilish condemned the recently passed law in Texas that makes abortion “functionally illegal,” as The New York Times wrote. “When they made that shit a law, I almost didn’t want to do this show,” Eilish said during her set, as captured by fan videos, “because I wanted to punish this fucking place for allowing that to happen here. But then I remembered that it’s you guys that are th...

Dave Grohl on Altering Nevermind Cover Art: ‘I Have Many Ideas’

The groundbreaking Nirvana record Nevermind celebrated its 30th birthday last month. Along with the buzz from commemorating the record, other news surrounding the notorious naked baby cover continued to arise. In August, Spencer Elden, a.k.a. the naked baby, sued Nirvana’s surviving members, Kurt Cobain’s estate, album-cover photographer Kirk Weddle, and the labels involved in the album’s release, alleging sexual exploitation and that the cover is child pornography. Dave Grohl recently discussed that Nevermind reissues could possibly bear new art, in light of the lawsuit. “I have many ideas of how we should alter that cover, but we’ll see what happens,” Grohl told The Times Magazine. “We’ll let you know. I’m sure we’ll come up with something good … I think that there’s much more to look fo...

Billie Eilish is set to be Glastonbury festival’s youngest solo headliner ever, at just 19 years old. Eilish revealed her booking at Glastonbury on her Instagram story today. It’s been a busy year for Eilish, as she released her second solo record Happier Than Ever, followed by a string of appearances, music videos, and performances. SPIN covered her animated video for “Oxytocin” off the record. Her dark and dream...

Coldplay and Selena Gomez Tease Emotional Ballad, ‘Let Somebody Go’

Listen to a snippet of the duet from the band’s upcoming album. Coldplay has another superstar collaboration in the works for their upcoming album, this time teaming up with actress/singer Selena Gomez. The Only Murders in the Building star took to Twitter on Monday (Oct. 4) to announce that she and the English rock band have combined forces on the new song “Let Somebody Go.” Gomez posted a visual to share the news with her followers, which featured a re-imagined, technicolor version of planet Earth rotating in space, surrounded by dozens of stars. The brief video also gave fans a sneak peek of the track, on which the “Lose You to Love Me” singer and Coldplay frontman Chris Martin sing, “When I called the mathematicians and I asked them to explain/ ...

Emily Ratajkowski Alleges Robin Thicke Grabbed Her Breasts on ‘Blurred Lines’ Set

Ratajkowski, 30, continues, “(The director, Diane Martel’s) voice cracked as she yelled out to me, ‘Are you okay?'” According to the excerpt, Martel confirmed Ratajkowski’s version of events, saying, “I remember the moment that he grabbed her breasts. One in each hand. He was standing behind her as they were both in profile. I screamed in my very aggressive Brooklyn voice, ‘What the f–k are you doing, that’s it!! The shoot is over!!’” Martel said that Thicke “sheepishly” apologized for his alleged actions and that she didn’t believe he would have done it if he’d “been sober.” The song and the video were both heavily criticized at the time for what detractors said was its blatantly misogynistic, sexist tone and objectification...
