The Sneaker Game: RARES App Founder Gerome Sapp

HipHopWired Featured Video Source: handout / RARES Sneakers are big money, and investing in them is a no-brainer, now. Gerome Sapp, a former NFL player and the Founder & CEO of RARES, introduced a new app that allows users to literally invest in kicks, but convincing venture capitalists of the money in the sneaker game was practically a non-starter. Despite a degree in Finance from Notre Dame (and an MBA from Harvard Business School), a keen insight into the viability of sneakers as an asset class, and a dedication inherent in anyone who can carve out a career as a pro-athlete, Sapp had to pull up stakes and go for self. “Finally, I was just like, ‘these people aren’t even my demographic’,” recalls Sapp of getting the cold shoulder from venture capitalists. “They don’t understand sneak...

Jason Aldean Reacts to Backlash Over Wife’s Anti-Biden Post: ‘I Will Never Apologize for My Beliefs’

When one Instagram user accused Brittany of using the couple’s children as “political props,” Aldean also defended his family. According to The Washington Post, Aldean commented, saying, “Watch ur mouth lady! We will teach our kids what we think is right and what we think is best for their future. If you think what is happening right now is ‘great’ for the future of our kids and grandkids, u are delusional!” When a commenter stated, “If you thought Trump’s path for America was any better, you’re delusional!,” to which Aldean responded, “Definitely better than what we got now! Please tell me one thing that the current administration has done that is positive? Just 1!!!” Previously, Aldean has kept his political beliefs close to the vest so as not to alienate a ...

Broadway’s ‘Aladdin’ Canceled for 2 Weeks After More COVID-19 Cases

“Daily PCR testing allows us the opportunity to detect a positive case before it is contagious,” she continued. “This allows us to isolate it before anyone else is put at risk, as we have done several times with the Aladdin company. Morning and evening swabs collected on Thursday returned highly accurate negative molecular PCR test results for all cast, crew and musicians that affirmed a safe performance environment for our company and audience.” Tickets for all dates will be refunded. The news follows an earlier decision today by the Broadway League to extend its existing COVID protocols and requirements, agreed upon by all 41 Broadway venues, with no reductions in the vaccine or mask mandates for audiences, performers, backstage crew and theater staff through the end of the year. Aladdin...

First Spin: The Week’s Best New Dance Tracks From Maya Jane Coles, Arca & More

Maya Jane Coles, “True Loves to the Grave” Maya Jane Coles and vocalist Claudia Kane demonstrate the thin line between love and hate in the video for Coles’ latest, “True Love to the Grave.” In the sort of Kill Bill meets Mortal Combat clip — a sequel to September’s equally noir-ish video for “Run to You” — Skin, lead vocalist of the legendary British rock band Skunk Anansie, barks orders over a cell phone before Kane, in striking black pleather, punches and stabs her way down a hallway to the beat of Coles’ sinewy, slightly sinister beats and then engages in a fight to the death with the masked producer. Who wins? Watch and see. — KATIE BAIN After remixing the Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande collaboration “...

More Than 250 ADE Festival Events Confirmed For 2021 Edition

Despite overwhelming adversity due to COVID-19, ADE Festival‘s organizers have been steadfast in their belief that the show must go on. It now appears that their efforts have been well spent. This week, they confirmed that more than 250 in-person shows across 90+ venues will take place during the event’s upcoming 2021 edition, scheduled for October 13-16.  This development follows a recent loosening of COVID-19 mitigation measures in the Netherlands, including an official end to social distancing on September 25th. Still, nightlife establishments are being held to a strict midnight curfew so ADE Festival will be held between the hours of 6AM and midnight.  Patrons will also be required to show proof of vaccination or provide a negative COVID-19 tes...

That “Oh No” Song From TikTok Was Remixed Into an EDM Track—And It Actually Works

The brainlessness of TikTok and its poisonous culture can ironically be summed up by the name of one of its biggest musical trends: “Oh no.” You know the one. The trend where TikTok users chronicle situations that went horribly wrong—with the exception of the moment they downloaded the app—and soundtrack them with the shrill “oh no” chant. But when the prepubescent buffoons of TikTok aren’t snorting condoms and licking mid-pandemic airplane toilet seats (yes, those were two real “challenges”), they’re inadvertently unearthing some great music.  Recommended Articles Joel Fletcher and HOOX have now capitalized on the trend by releasing an EDM version, harnessing the infamous sample taken from The Shangri-Las’ 1960s classic “Rem...

From Online to Big Time: At Dirtybird Records, a New Flock Takes Flight

Like a mother bird keeping her eggs warm, Dirtybird Records has hatched the careers of several DJs in their own proverbial nest over the last 18 months, taking one artist after the next under their wing. Social media helped to hype the label’s newest recruits in the absence of live shows, but few could argue the real magic happened on the online streaming platform Twitch, which seemingly overnight became the heartbeat of the electronic dance music scene during the pandemic. For Dirtybird, their Twitch channel garnered staggering support with more than 7 million viewers tuning in to stream since April 2020, totaling more than 928,000 hours of direct screen time with fans. They also quickly racked up more than 50,000 active followers on the platform, bolstering their digital prese...
